I had the privilege of painting around two dozen Victorians when I was in college. I say privilege because in the commericial/residential painting business getting to paint Victorians are covetted jobs. Spray painting McMansions, track homes or the standard buisness building white and beige and roll out the trim with maybe a accent color is the norm. It doesn't take any skill and it's called blow and go in the trades. Getting to strip and refinish woodwork, cut in all the trim and making the old girl shine again is a real joy.

Not trying to be a smart aleck or the like here but circa 9:25 or thereabouts...is it my imagination or does that look a little more Edwardian vs Victorian? I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that but I've been trying to pinpoint certain things I like, and some of that baroque on the ceiling pendants and such with the right glass pattern strikes me as technically being Edwardian. Yes? No? I can see how one follows the other as a progression but I like them both and they do have like attributes. I'm trying to conceptualize some things in which I like that period fused in with baroque and some other things. 🙂

I find it immensely interesting that art is discussed without mention of the very influential painters of the time, such as Frederick Morgan, John Everett Millais or John Constable. They are still popular and I have several prints. It was the most beautiful era for paintings.

Thank you for generously sharing your knowledge and love of interior design. My favorite aspect of Victorian style is its creative use of space, especially the lovely gilded gallery walls that expand in all directions. I also love the tufted chairs, sofas and rich fabrics!

You forgot Little Women, perfect Christmas time story. I am decorating my apartment in country Victorian style or English Cottage style, I have collected antique pieces to make it more authentic, been a collector and study the time period for years, I recently found a perfect jem, I found an antique Victoria like the one you pictured at Goodwill for $ 50 it just felt meant to be as there are resellers and one had come in that day and missed it, I am still in love with it and in aww, never thought I'd own one as most go for a higher amount, I try to keep my purchases under $100, but there has been those slightly over ones like my two different types of wash stands and my Victorian photo album, with Cabinet Cards and Tin Types already in it. My biggest collects are antique medicine bottles, teacups, a few shaving mugs, souvenir mugs, mustache mugs and Victorian photographs. I collect other items, I've been collecting slowly over a 15 year period, I know my antiques, I still don't have a marble table, or proper fireplaces, but I know where to get them, just don't know how to transport them.

Hi Jacqueline! Thank you for this tutorial! I adore "A Christmas Carol" and used to have the habit of reading it every Christmas. We are, as it says, "fellow travelers to the grave," so we may as well spend the journey loving and caring for one another. I'm not sure I'd ever do Victorian decor, but I do have my holly, berries, dried orange slices and fresh evergreens strewn about. Have a Merry Christmas!

I enjoyed the video, but it would have been fun if you'd told us a bit of history with the decorating. Queen Victoria had her first Christmas tree in 1832. Greenery (holly, ivy, pine boughs) were a pagan revival that reminded people that even in the cold, dark winter, spring and the sun weren't far away. That kind of thing.

Speaking of the artwork: one thing that most seem to have forgotten is that a lot of the paintings were basically souvenirs, similar to postcards, which were your proof that you've traveled to the area and now had the bragging rights! My family had a lot of them once upon a time, but also porcelain figures, books, and god knows whatever else, but we lost it almost completely as time hasn't been too kind to us...

Nice video. The intro reminded me of how we got my family cake recipe that dates back to the Victorian era: Back in the era, there were plenty of household goods stores popping up with new ingredients and all sorts of innovations. One of them was proudly celebrating its 25th anniversary: Dr. Oetker (an absolute household name in today's Europe!). They distributed as a giveaway a small cookbook with innovative recipes. One of them was for a marble cake. The problem was: soon thereafter, everything went to S-t. As you can imagine, Austrians didn't have an easy time in the great war, and even worse in the second world war... Needless to say: colonial goods such as cocoa were in short supply... Still, we Austrians are sweet tooths, who love cooking and can get quite creative, especially when it comes to finding work around pesky limitations... We kept producing the white part of the cake and used it as a matrix for whatever sweet fruits we could gather... A bit like Borsh, but a cake... They could be freshly picked (with the consent of the owner or not) or canned... What mattered was that we could eat cake... I inherited the cookbook with which it all started. It has been a century in use passed down among my relatives. If we were Japanese, then it would probably have become a Tsukumogami. LOL (they are obsessed about mending and respectfully disposing of items and used to believe that items that stayed in use for a century could become spirits, similar to how places can become haunted in European superstition, just that it wasn't limited to negative energy, but also positive emotions, etc.)

What is it I like about Victorian interiors?: I am renting my first respectable apartment (Please notice the respectable). I have dreamed of how I will decorate my apartment for years. One way was artwork from Patrick Nagel (I'm an 80's baby), I have considered seeing if I can pull off art deco (I grew up in New York City). Victorian seems like the easiest to pull off and most comfortable.
