How to Decipher Tempo Markings in Music - Music Theory Crash Course

First off, what is tempo? The tempo of a piece of music is the measure of how fast or slow a piece of music is played. Think of it like a speedometer for music.
In most modern sheet music you will see a modern tempo marking that is easy to use with a metronome. But sometimes you will only see a word or words that tell you how fast or slow the music should be played. These words represent a range of tempos.

You realize that you allowed 3 beats on a half note at the end of the phrase? My 6th grade class thinks it should be a dotted half note...Love tho

Nah, it's still two. It's just we don't usually hold that half not for its full value, which would be why it sounds long.

"Moderato" is usually around 98-112 bpm. "Con moto" means "with motion", so you can probably take it at the faster side of moderato somewhere around 110-120 bpm.
