I think in the long run, I would regret more not having tried going to med school. Right now I’m honestly scared of trying and if the long difficult process. I also know that in about 10 years, if I choose any other career and I end up not enjoying it, I’ll definitely end up looking back and say damn I should’ve went to med school. Due to this, I’m going to try my best and leave all regrets behind me.

I'm 29 and have been a fire fighter by trade for over 2 years as a volunteer and have always regretted (since being 18 and being fresh out of high school) not pursuing my first dream job of being a doctor....I may go back and change everything

Great video! I would add, don't let your age discourage you from chasing your dreams. A psychiatrist I worked with, did not start medical school until he was 45 years old. He practiced for 18 years and just recently retired without any regret.

@@mathewdaly8515 let's say you have 300k in student loans after finishing residency. If you make 250k per year as an attending after taxes (not too unreasonable) and pay off 30k per year, you will be debt free in a decade. Although that may seem like a lot of money initially, think about it this way: you are only subtracting 30k from your total income, which means that you will still be making 220k per year instead of 250k per year. That's still far more than most other people earn and is more than enough money to live comfortably. You could even choose to pay twice as much per year and pay off your loans in half the time.

Anyone that goes to med school and doesn't match residency is going to have a regret of a 10.

N A W A F , not matching for residency means not being able to do the minimum 3 year requirement of service in a clinic/hospital after med school, these three years are required after med school and allow you to practice as a doctor, the years after med school are referred to as residency

@@user-dq4iq3vd2l Residency in medicine does not refer to getting on-campus/off-campus housing, but rather that the mandatory 3-5 year training that is follows the 4-year degree in order to become licensed to practice medicine. Not matching to residency means you have a medical degree without the ability to practice or call yourself a doctor.

2 years ago I was debating whether or not to apply to med school. I had paralysis by analysis weighing up the pros and cons, but deep deep down I always knew it was what I wanted to do. I came across this video and it was the impetus for starting the application. Looking at it from the perspective in the video, I realised the regret I would have from never pursuing a medical career would far outweigh any regrets from actually pursuing it. Nearly finished my first year of med school and haven't looked back, not a single regret.

Same here i am a medical aspirant from Pakistan gonna give my MCAT in September.... deep down i know i WANT to do it and be a doctor but i find it soooooo difficuly to study like i have to constantly motivate myself and am kind of lazy even for the things which i like.... and constantly i have been low from the past month kind of overwhelmed from the burden of study even though i do not study much which is making me question if i will be able to pass MCAT and IF i get admission will i be able to continue MBBS? I've completed my first year recently. It's been a crazy ride, very overwhelming indeed. I remember crying at nights before MCAT due to stress. I just wanna tell you that give it your best and pray to Allah. If this field is in your best interest, the whole process will become smooth and easy for you. Don't ever doubt your capabilities without testing them first. Good luck on your future endeavors!

I don't think enough students job shadow. 90% of the prenursing and premed students I know haven't even stepped foot in a hospital or clinic. Spending time in the role is critical. Also, spending time with various ppl in that role is important because one person can be amazing and another a douche which has an impact on your experience. One hospital's ED can be poorly ran while another is excellent.

iwatchkittenvids45 What I am seeing is a huge competition with classmates to get in then they don't realize what they are getting into. I will say as a nurse you have alot of opportunities that otherwise wouldn't be open. Like participating in research or being a nurse educator.

Sadly the country I lived in and the school I was in didn't provide any kind of shadowing I tried but didn't find any places that allow that... It's pretty shitty Anyway I got accepted into med school still didn't start but I'm having doubts now... I'm just really worried that I chose the wrong career (my other option was psychology)

At 60 years old, I'm not considering med school, but I'm considering lots of options for what I can do with the rest of my life, so I'm glad I stumbled across this. This was super encouraging. I’ve always dreamed of being a surgeon, but didn’t do well in high school so I just kinda let the idea of college die and pursued other giftings (music.) But my medical dream pretty much comes back everyday to haunt me lol. I just never want to look back on my life and think “dang! You should have done it!”

I relate. I didn't do well in school, but mostly because my teachers couldn't care less so it made me not study at all for tests.... They made me feel stupid. I'm a very musical person, and very theatrical in personality, but I don't want a job that has anything to do with that. Ever since I was a kid I was passionate with anything medical. I'm 20 now. I know I'm not stupid, I just need to learn how to study. And I WILL go to med school! You can do it!

Thank you for this video. I've never had a doubt in my mind that I wanted to be a doctor until now. My biggest regret of pursuing this career would be not enjoying time with my mom and dad and being able to start a family. Also not having financial independence for the next 7 years scares me. the rate for burnout decides who regrets. general surgery does well. check out how many people hate their job as an engineer. still so many doctors want to stop clinical work so early. so many people regret not going to med school. we have people who are not happy with their working lives. do something about this, help us. we want a four day work week.

That is exactly what I am worried about, currently contemplating if I should go on w med school or settle for other courses which I dnt particularly have an interest in..

Ive wanted to become a U.S Navy SEAL in high school and I'm currently in my first semester of community college majoring in criminal justice, now I'm considering in doing premed(continuing my bachelors in CJ) and becoming a pediatrician. I know I want to do something in this world to help people and I think that's what drives me to try and become special operations or FBI agent. I think I would definetly regret to have not at least attempt to go to med school and really try and put my all into it and pursue something that interests me. thanks for helping me decide if I should even attempt to go through with this.

My thing is (as a junior in high school) is i think I would really enjoy Med School, but I dont know if I would enjoy being a doctor. I will see how my life turns out. I just fear that I will go too deep into the medical journey just to find out that it isnt for me. But I also can't think of anything that I would want to be more than a doctor. We will see where life takes me. I change my mind on careers a lot so we'll see what I end up with in the future.

My ex, after getting his PhD in Analytical Chem and working said he wished he’d went into business. it was his life style he didn’t like. He envisioned having a family business if he had a degree in business.

Im not very good at maths (I can be better but I know my limits-bad-), not very good at musics, letter, laws..All I have is meds school

You've discovered that you're 18 years old and don't know anything about playing the piano, so being a concert pianist is out. Then you notice that your vision is not 20/20 so being a fighter jet pilot and ultimately an airline pilot is snuffed. You're good at mathematics, but not brilliant, so physicist is out. You're left with medicine. (and the pay is better than working as a speed bump at McDonald's.)

Loved this video. I often struggle with having to "split" myself between 2 totally different career paths. You brought up the interesting point that many older people have the regret of not going after something while they were younger which leads me to question, should I decide to go full forward into medicine while I'm still also going after something else in the meantime? Study time is very demanding and requires a huge amount of sacrifice and time away from doing things that I'd much rather do not just for fun but also for personal growth. The decision still remains for me. I hope that it doesn't take me too long because time waits for no one. lol

This is encouraging to hear. I am 28 and am a returning student on the career path of nursing (BSN) but I have always felt internally drawn to being a doctor. This is a career choice I know I would love and would be great at if I can better manage my time. My only hesitation with pursuing medical school is that I have two young and active boys, one is 8 yrs. old and the other is almost 2 yrs. old. I am afraid of missing out on watching & being apart of my children grow up if I am in medical school, however, I also don't want to waste anymore time not pursing my dream career. Do you have any recommendations on how I can manage both pursing medical school and being an involved mother? Also, do you have any recommendations on the best direction (school/class wise) I should take if I decide to pursue medical school instead of nursing? Thanks!

Brittany Reece I totally get your predicament. I have a 3 year old and my father went to dental school when I was young. We hardly spent any time together until he was established when I was nearly an adult. I don’t want to do the same to my son but I also don’t want to settle for a career that I’m not fully engaged in. Great question!

I have a friend who is in her early 30s and has two teenagers (I think, they might be younger). She was a science teacher for about 10 years and she just got accepted and is now in her first year of a good MD school. She studied for the MCAT after work for a few months and didn’t do very well. So she gave it another try after taking some dedicated time and killed it. Of course she did plenty of other research on how to get in but all that to say, it’s definitely doable.

Talking of advantage, I don't really know what mine is.. But I really wanna do this. (General surgeon) I'm still In highschool but I want to do this.

Currently interviewing at a few medical schools. Interviewed at a DO school. I think Dr. Parker's opinion is that caribbean MD programs are better than US DO programs but I really disagree. I guess unless you really think you can play the odds and really want to go into surgery or derm or plastics, which I have very little interest in personally (more interested in primary care because I think that's what is currently needed most in healthcare) I still think a US DO school, while maybe not quite as good as US MD, is still a great option. Thoughts?

I would regret failing out of medical school / not getting a residency because then my family would see me as a failure... but if I didn’t enjoy practicing medicine and used my medical degree in another capacity, I would have 0 regret. help lol

How are your grades? Do you genuinely think you’ll fail out of school?

I've been going through something and I kind of refrain from bringing it up because people can be mean. I am on the premed track but I don't know if that's what I want to do. I know I'd be a good psychiatrist, and I love that subject matter, but I really don't care about physics, calc or chemistry and they ruin my mental health to the point where I think about throwing it all away. I have no interest in math based science, so I hate that I have to do so much of it to even get a chance to apply to med school. Whenever I visualize my future, I don't even see myself as a doctor. I see myself as a business owner and designer but I know that those are such risky paths and I don't want to fail. I'm not sure if I genuinely want to be a doctor or if it's just a substitute for what I'm missing in my life.

So probably you can do engineering premed. Now of course, thats easier to do with chemical eng, since that automatically includes most premed prereqs(but still missing 2 or 3 in most cases) while mechanical or electrical engineering miss more. But still even these at least handle the math and physics prereqs, and mecheng usually has g chem 1 of not g chem 1 and 2, so the chem prereqs are partially handled automatically. Theres a lot of majors that are doable with premed track that many dont consider, oftenn assuming(incorrectly) that a bio or chem MAJOR is neccessary when they arent, per se. But nonetheless we can recall that med schools use a wholistic approach to admissions(thank god) and looks at multiple factors. Deciding between engineering and med has been hard for me, but this vid makes it easier.

It is much better to go to medicine, study and then realize that, this is not the field for you and stop! Rather than spend your whole life thinking that if you went there you would be better.

Great idea however medicine works very differently in the UK so still nowehre closer to be 100% sure whether medicine is for me.

Hi Maria. I'm a UK doctor and I would strongly recommend doing work experience at hospitals/GP surgeries. If your school has links/contacts use that otherwise pick a department you would like to do experience in e.g Paeds, then physically go to the nearest paeds ward and explain who you are then nicely ask if you can get the email of the head of department or another consultant. Write them a nice email asking to do exp on the ward. Most will be very welcoming. Hope it helps

Seems like you yourself didn’t go with the ‘follow your advantage’ advice if you didn’t do very well in college. In spite of that you seem to have turned out fine in the medical world.

Thats the thing. There are other things that inspire me. But at the end of the day I wanna choose this path bcs of the love that i have for these biology subjects and also i want to make my dad happy who's also a doctor(cuz i feel like this is the best i can do for him in this life). But still I'm scared if i will regret this in the future. But i myself know if I didn't succeed in those other passions i have, I would instantly regret about not continuing in medicine. Never too late i saw a video on her where Dr. Mike had an interview with another doctor who started med school at 35 or 37 i believe. He was older than u

@@josephliu603 realistically you could finish residency by 38-40 so i think you could do it!

I'm a paramedic and want to go back to school part time for my bachelor's. Either do med or PA school from there (of course full time) but I have been told that going part time for the undergrad portion might not look good to medical and PA schools. I wanted your opinion because you took a non-traditional route.

Can someone help me? I’ve had 2 spine surgeries and one brain surgery. I would go into medicine in a heartbeat if it didn’t take so long and cost so much. I don’t know if I should choose med school or become a software engineer. I’m just scared that I won’t be able to make it. Should I go into computer science then if I get good grades the first year then I should try to get into med school?

Oh hey for me I’m going through the same thing with teaching or med school, but I got to field observe in teaching and like it a lot, but I’m not sure if I can shadow medicine I’m looking for an opportunity to. I suggest you look for shadow opportunities to shadow medicine and also shadow a software engineer and see which one you will enjoy. Hope this helps.

@@geraldleyson1722 I’ve got many doctors that I could ask to shadow so I might do that. I doubt any of my surgeons would but maybe my neurologist could. I hope you find the right decision for yourself. My thing is I love snowboarding, nature, and swimming and I also like business and the the aspect of investing. It’s a really hard choice.

If you currently don’t have a life or know you won’t have a life in the future, go to med school.

Lol oh man take a job that requires you to take on and physically handle in most cases other people’s problems or sit in a chair and hm ha about ways to make the next car 10% more efficient. Way to advocate! Not only that, there are tons of people out there who might not feel confident in their math or their mcat scores. Talk to them, not the populace. These are the people watching your vids. Help them.

I feel like this is a terrible decision making process to be completely honest. If you use this logic you will live a cowardice and sad life. You can’t just factor in probably of feeling regret: you have to factor in the likelihood of outcomes and positive feelings as well. You chose the path that has the highest weighted average.

Go or no go. Some one was a soldier. I'm 27. You were the same when starting yeah? Average intelligence? Learns from experience. I'm Thinking about being a dentist and also getting a physician license. Surgeon would be my specialty should I pursue that more. Being a prior army artillery scout and working security in New Orleans east I've ALOT of trauma. Most doctors down here aren't worth a spit. When did doctors sell out to big corporations and stop caring. Pisses me off.
