Is Med School Right for Me? | Deciding on a Career in Medicine

Anyone can tell you a million things about what it means to go to medical school and pursue a career as a physician. But only you can decide if it is right for you. By using the tools in this video and gaining exposure, you will have a better idea if medicine is right for you.
It is crucial you understand the pros and cons of pursuing a career in medicine prior to committing to medical school. In this video I go over the ways to determine if a career as a doctor/physician is right for you.
I go over:
1. The path to becoming a doctor in the United States (medical school, residency, fellowship)
2. The financial repercussions of choosing a career in medicine
3. Deal breakers, including going into medicine for the money, hating school or learning, and not liking people
4. Qualities you SHOULD have, such as wanting to help people, being a leader of the healthcare team, desiring an intellectually challenging career, whether or not you like procedures, and the importance of hard work, discipline, and work ethic over intelligence.
5. The importance of shadowing and gaining exposure prior to medical school.

I want to say something as a former medical student. If you want to study medicine, and you are afraid of non being enough, or this video discourage you, do it. Medicine is hard, sure, and the video has some reason, but remember that everyone is different. Actually, the studying part is not that hard, I consider it hard on other things like the mental-health related stuff. When I entered MS I was not sure of my decision, I made it because I had to (nobody forced me but myself) and I felt very depressed because I felt I was doing something I didn't want to (I wanted Biology, no idea why I entered to MS). My depression lead to no motivation at all → no study → bad grades → no good results → more depression → wanting to drop out→ anxiety and depression... it was a cycle. That is the hardest thing in medicine: to keep you motivated. My friends that were convinced about their decision were doing pretty good, and that was even worse for me. When I entered, somebody told us "Never compare yourselves because you don't know what the other is going through" and I really tried to do it, but it's hard when you are the worse in the class. My school has a mental health department (apparently us MS, became mentally ill really frequently) and they helped me. Now I am sure about my decision, and I am on the top of my generation. Medicine is competitive but even when there is awful people, I met really nice ones that helped me out, and they sometimes had the same issues as me. Always be nice, if you need help (on anything) say it and if you see someone that need help, help him... isn't that the reason why a lot of people study medicine? Helping people? Why don't do it with your classmates? Some people will forget that, but be one that doesn't. And yes, now the girl that got 2.3 on her first biochemistry exam is teaching biochemistry. And so far I got 9.8/10 and hospitals fighting for me, because I find the motivation to go on. My point is: if you have motivation, don't let anyone take it away. Are you an intelligent person but not a hard worker? You can learn. You are not a natural leader? You can learn too, the career itself helps you, and it's more about team work. Etc. Medical school is for you if you want it, that's it. You can make anything, the biggest limits are on our own mind.

I'm only 15 but I already feel very pressured to figure out what I career I am going to pursue. I have already looked into different types of medical fields like orthopedic, sports med, radiologist, ultrasound technician, etc. Even though there are people who say I dont have to know what I want be right away, there are so many more people saying "it's better to know before you go to college" and it seems like they are really saying that I have to know what I want to be as of right now. Update: I ended up applying to be an ultrasound tech 2 years in a row and didn't get in both times. I decided to apply for an x ray technician and got in my first try! I'm finishing up my first year and really love it. It's hard but I like the medicine aspect if it, the patient aspect, the flexible schedule that I'll be able to have once I graduate, and of course the money isn't bad either. I hope to go further and become an MRI tech. Everything fell into place and I feel like I am exactly where I should be😁

Hi Anna! Never feel pressured. If you know exactly what you want to do AWESOME! As for me, I was a musician. Double majored in my first year of college as a Trombone and Vocal performance major. I was on a $72,000 scholarship that I received annually and had it made. Though I LOVED music and was passionate and very good at it (as illustrated by the scholarship) I wanted more. I loved exercise and nutrition and being a personal trainer. I LOVE helping people any chance I get. So I took a leap of faith, transferred universities, and fell in to a dietetics program on no scholarship. I went through about 85% of my dietetics degree and was exposed to all aspects of the healthcare team. My professors shared their stories and taught us various procedures and treatments for multiple care unit fields. Our focus was long term treatment but I fell in love with the idea of being a leader of a healthcare team because I am all about showing people the utmost respect for their expertise and solving puzzles that are completely different day-to-day. The procedures fascinated me while everyone around me found them disgusting. It was then I decided I wanted to go to medical school. The immense interest and love for helping people was and is powerful to this day. I am 22 years old now and should have graduated this past May 2018. But I'll have another year to go before I can graduate and take the MCAT then apply. It's never too late. If you figure it out soon and continue with that vision then that's GREAT. If you, like me, figure it out later, don't worry about it! This is also GREAT! Focus on the pace that is best for you and you'll stumble on what you're passionate for in no time! :)

The medical profession, hospitals, pharmaceutical, and health insurance companies are one big united racket designed to milk patients dry of their money. As a result, many of us live long enough to have bottom of the heap in state board result RN,s and other borderline professionals and nurses aids call you "sweet heart" and "honey". Hospital administration people are only interested in Q.A. and their pay checks. I saw it all from 1978 until I retired in 2015, both as a professional, as a patient, and son. Get your heads out of the clouds physicians and use your magnificent brains to learn to cure what might be cured, not just to treat to line your and the hospitals pockets.

This video weighs really heavy on me, cuz unfortunately, medicine is the only field I have interest in. I LOVE biology, especially in humans. BUT, if I don't have people skills or leadership skills, what's gonna happen? I have absolutely no interest in engineering, law, business, accounting, etc. Medicine seems to be the only thing that fits with my character. I've only just started getting exposed to university life. They say it's SUPER competitive, but my problems are self-confidence and probably not enough hours dedicated to studying. They say it's hard and not worth it. And all this is just... gah. IDK. Update: I didn't get into med school but I did discover that I have an interest in neurosciences/psychology so that's what I'm studying at the moment. I don't know yet where that'll lead, but I'm hoping whatever it is, I'd be contributing to society. Thank you, reply section, for your kind words.

Although the salary is pretty high, it just doesn't resonate with me, I don't feel any passion for it really... If I bring up any other profession, she will constantly explain how being a doctor would be better, I EVEN CONSIDERED BEING A LAWYER!!!!! I honestly feel very conflicted, not because of her, but because I don't know what to do, I love music but it has such a MASSIVE stigma around it, I wish it wasn't such a scary profession. I love medicine because it is both innovative and an ever-changing field. I am heavily interested in doing surgery (i.e. neurosurgery) because although I love working with my hands and being in an OR setting, I have also gained some research experience during college which has shown me that this can be applied to "real-life" situations. Without having a good understanding of the nervous system, neurosurgeons would not be able to perform their jobs. Medicine is about more than acquiring knowledge but being able to create new and/or better treatments for everyone.

@amberpark @medschoolinsidersI love neurosurgery as well, I am currently a premed here in orlando Florida, and i have an extensive history of having a arachnoid cyst in my front left temporal lobe about when I was 10. When I was 17 i had another surgery for a chiari malformation in my neck. My personal neurosurgeon has been with me since day one and after hearing that i will graduate top 5% and other things knew I might be able to handle a life in medicine (BC after knowing me for several years he said he knew that i would hate becoming a engineer.) So he wanted to push me into medicine. And he wanted me to shadow him for the summer coming up. Me not really knowing at the time how big this was i took it. I spent about 2 1/2 months with him seeing absolutely everything i could want. I got to ask all the hard questions of being a surgeon, what it was like for him, his family, and other things. I fell in love. He explained to me as he did the surgeries. He let me speak with kids in the office and round in the hospital with him. I got to connect with the kids on so many levels because i went thru the same thing that they were going through. At the end of it he told me he really wants me to succeed and will do all he can to help me go there. He said that i have something that he will never have and it is the experience of going through what he does every single day. He said hell give me a letter, his PA's said if i need one they will too. I made some many good connections in the hospital that i had my life changed in.

I love medicine because it saved my life and has always intrigued me since then. when I was 9 I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, got worse and worse and I was in the hospital a lot when I was 14&15, just the fact that something like a disease could cause so much harm on/in my body amazed me,(I've always loved how things worked, was planning to be a engineer before hand) and how the medication that I was on could have such drastically different effects. I already like helping people and do a lot of community service, have all A's and love learning. and the whole career is based off learning your whole life and I love that. also I'd love to inspire others kids like me, rather to go in to med school, or look on the brighter side of live and do what interests them. I'm 16 now, in remission, back in school as a rising junior in HS. But I love most aspects of the fields and would love to go to med school.

I thought maybe nursing or PA would be a good fit but every time I’ve been around trauma doctors I get an intense rush and I love how they handle situations, pt’s, and how they evolve. So after a lot of thought I’ve decided to go finish my classes and then take my mcat. Your videos have helped a lotwith explaining the details that go into the process. Thank you.

@@rosieposie1504 omg 3 years ago!! Things have changed drastically; I am now a sophomore in college. I started off pre-med and I was doing good until chemistry turned into physics. I hate physics 😭 and I just wanted to get into the psych aspect of it. I was minoring in psychology and ended up switching my major to psychology and adding a double in poli sci with a minor in Spanish. Didn’t end up liking poli sci, so I switched my double for Spanish. So many switches right? Lol I tell you all of this just because it’s absolutely okay to not know exactly what you want within your first two years of college; that’s the perfect time to explore around with your electives. You might take an intro to psych and an intro to bio and decide you like one better, or both. I would try the med track first because that one is very easy early on to decide if you like or not since it’ll be the same dry science throughout. I also recommend speaking to an advisor and seeking out professionals in your field of interest to help you see what the career is really like and also help decide if that’s what you want to do. I hope this helped a bit!!

I realize that medicine is not the right job for me, I'm not the kind of student who would like to study very very hard (because I stress out so easily) and I don't like the idea of a very long path for a career. I enjoy to learn about scince and watch the surgery videos, I like to see that kind of things and I don't see blood and organs like a gross thing. But my main reason to study medicine was the salary. I love art, I can't imagen myself without doing it, like if I wouldn't be me without art in my life. I also love the people who have the same passion as me, I really enjoy that community. But everybody says that being an artist or a graphic designer is not a good idea, that you'll starving, you'll be poor, economic problems, etc. So I decided medicine because the idea of being a surgeon is...well, I sort of like it, the problem is that the process is not something that I would be very excited about. I really don't know what to do now, what should I choose :/

I can honestly say that I can relate to this on a very high scale. But as the popular saying goes, art and science are concepts that are in complete opposition to each other. They aren’t the same due to the fact that science tends to be based on more logical aspects whereas art is more unorthodox and unconventional. It would be difficult to study medicine if you are passionate about art. I think you should do what you enjoy regardless of the salary -but be the best at it. You’d rather be happy in doing your job than waking up everyday with regrets.

You need to stand firm in what you want and do not want to do. No one will be living your life, only you and you will have to be able to live with your choices. If you do not feel like you want to pursue med, and that you do not have strong desire for it, other than pressure from family, then you will never be happy. You cant live constantly trying to impress someone. Just this past year I decided to no longer pursue med school as it is more of a desire from family/social pressure rather than my own. I decided that I will not voluntary put myself through hell and force myself to like it just to satisfy other people's expectations. This is a very very stressful and busy life style and if you dont want that, then you need to save yourself before it drags you into a depression and resentment. if at the end of the day your parents still dont want the best for you (to be happy), then you need to become your own boss and do what is right for you and not others. Best of Luck and stay strong!

This is something that has motivated me and made me a better person, i have dedicated a lot of time to achieve this, learning how tu study, getting things done in the moment, organizing my time properly. That is why I want to be a doctor cause i have a lot of questions in my mind, in addition I don't want someone to feel the pain that i felt when we have been discriminated by some doctors because of our nationality. But my most or main reason is I want to help a lot of patient cause it tears my heart when i see someone who die even its illness can be cured, but can't because of they don't have money to pay medical bills. I don't ambission or think that I want to help all poor sick people but i wan't to help as many patients that i can help.

Hey Jay, I’m currently a freshman college and I’m taking the prerequisites, and I am really struggling with chemistry. I know this is one of the main courses required into médical school, my dream has always been wanting to be a doctor but I feel it’s because of pressure from my parents to get a good paying job. I am working really hard towards learning all these sciences but I feel I have to do this and I have no other choice. Specially with all the pressure of my family. Jay what do u honestly think I should do, since u have experience going through all of this? Please help, and thank you so much 💚

I love medicine because when I was 11 my father had a stroke and ended with me taking care of him like an infant. I found a passion for helping people and found myself often helping at school when someone would have problems. I also have always loved learning about the human body and found the challenges of figuring out problems quickly very exciting. I looked more into therapy than anything but in the end decided to go for neurology. I may only be a teenager but I still do nightly lessons online.

It sounds so strange to me that you must complete 4 years of _college_ for medical school, because in Canada college is like the lower education and we call what America calls "college" "university", and there's a huge difference between college and university here. In the US people seem to use college and university interchangeably? In Canada you can't get into med school with a college degree is has to be a university degree.

He says to be a pathologist you must be very good at recognizing shapes, him and I often practice with cars, trying to recognize the brand without looking at the logo. The only down fall is that many of his colleagues complain about pain in their wrist due to constantly changing the focus on their microscopes, some even wear braces lol.

Hi! I am a grade 11 high school student, who has recently completed a hospital co-op placement. There, I shadowed nurses and surgeons and have watched them treat patients in patient rooms and in OR! I found being in the OR very intriguing and I can't think of any other profession to go into other than being a surgeon! But, I keep doubting myself that I am not intelligent enough to be a doctor. Even though I have a lot of experience shadowing healthcare professionals and working in labs, I'm still not sure what other experiences I can do to help me understand if pursuing a career in medicine is right for me. Any advices?

Mentor, shadow, get hospital care experience(work as scribe, emt, er tech, medical assistant, etc), go on mission trips, RESEARCH, volunteer. Do this in college particularly-med schools aren't going to look at what you did in high school. Get 3.7 GPA & up in college so try to take a lot of courses in hs that will perhaps make college classes easier to do well in(like calculus in high school will help you in calculus in college & then that will reflect in general physics).

When I grow up, I want to be a oncologist- and everyone I know is saying that I would make a wonderful doctor because of my ability to calm and reassure people, especially young kids. I picked oncology because I'm very interested in the development and treatment of cancer, and in medial oncology you do not need to do much surgery, which I'm fine with doing, if I have to. I think being a doctor is a great career for me, but I'm worried about the lack of resources on Canadian medical training. I know a fair bit about cancer treatments and how things like Leukaemia work, and I love watching series like the children's hospital to see them out to action.

Hi Jay, Ive been deciding on a career on medicine for quite a while now but Im still unsure if this is what I really want. Im so overwhelmed about the time duration that it'll take to be a physician, work life balance is important to me and from what I researched this is a bit impossible if you're a doctor. Im scared that if I choose this career, I'd be a full on workaholic and not have time for anything else. I'll be studying from the rest of my 20's and once I become a doctor, Id be working long hours for days. Im confused if this is what I really want... any advice?

I did shadow a physician(GI) once and told me that he wishes he had more time to spend w/ his wife and 2 kids since he's barely home and if he was ever home he usually sleep in. He's often on call and vacation days are no exception. So that really kinda pushed me back. I mean now just thinking about the amount of studying that I have to do and the time sacrifice I have to make is already making me feel miserable. I'm just scared that If I did take this path, I might regret it later. Is this a red flag for someone considering a med career? And how do you know if you really "love" a career or just the "thought of it". Btw I'm about to start 12th grade and still thinking about what course I want to take(one of them is med obviously but my options are open). I apologize if I keep asking this long ass questions I just really need some strong advice rn.

During my time in the medical environment, I fell in love with the atmosphere and became captivated by the work the doctors and surgeons were doing. Now I don't have to go to hospital at all as my allergy is suitably dealt with, I am adamant that medicine is what captivates me and what drives me. Luckily, my aunt is a theatre nurse and she has arranged that I can shadow the surgeons in theatre soon after my 18th birthday; I can't wait.

I’ve once heard in one of his videos that if you want to be a doctor, you should be someone who is aiming “only” for medical. But that’s where my problem starts, I also have an interest in Business. Don’t get me wrong, I have always wanted to be a doctor since I was young and the thing I’m so attracted to it is like the way you could just figure out what is wrong with a patient with some observations and tests. I also love the part where you know exactly what to do to cure the patient(except surgery, it’s something I’ve always hated). I’m not sure if I “love helping others” like some kind people do but I really feel satisfied when I got to make the other person so happy by helping him/her with even the simplest thing. I don’t know what kind of doctor I wanna be but that one white glorious coat is the thing I’ve always dreamed of wearing. I would also wanna try working in a office but I’m not sure such things are available in my country since I’m just a high school student still struggling to decide on what subject I should choose and I’m not sure if I love Biology, maybe not but I do love Chemistry. If there is someone who could give me some advice(any advice) about what I should do, please comment below plz.

If you love business you could do a speciality like Family Medicine and then open up your own clinic eventually. That can take some time but you could easily have your own clinic by your late thirties. The other thing about picking a subject in college, those subjects are so close together. If you do Biology you take chemistry classes, if you do Chemistry you take Biology classes. I’d recommend picking the one you think you’re better at. If you’re stronger in math I’d go with Chemistry, but if you kinda struggle with it I’d go Biology.

You can definitely utilize your love for business and be a doctor. As a matter of fact some schools have combined programs that will allow you to graduate with a masters in business and your medical doctorate degree. So if that’s a passion of yours definitely pursue it and medicine as well. Hope this helps! (I’m a 4th year medical student)

After watching this video, I seem more motivated to pursue medicine. My parents have always implied for me to go into medicine, however, I created the passion myself. After traveling poor parts of the world and seeing the conditions people are in and the people in need, this truly motivated myself to not only pursue medicine, but to pursue in the well being of humans. Every life taken away affects the life of another person. I want to change this. I want to treat a person's life in order to save the lives of others. Medicine is not only money and helping people, it's helping the people around the ill person on that bed, is who I would like to help.
