HOW TO DEAL WITH EMOTIONS AS A HIGHLY SENSITIVE PERSON
taking a little break from the Halloween content with this impromptu mental health video. it's ironic I edited and uploaded this today since today is one of THOSE days. I tried to take my own advice as I edited and really listened to my words as if it were a friend. I hope you can do the same and get something out of this video, feel free to suggest other content ideas that you'd like to see me talk about on my channel. with all this talk of mental health going around, it's lit a fire under me to continue the conversation, at least with the topics that I have personal experience with.

its amazing hearing someone else talk about how hard it is to function when all you can do is feel. I've tried to explain this to my boyfriend when I can't get school work done because my brain is just a emotional wreck and he swears I'm just too lazy to get my work done (I swear hes not a bad person he's just never experienced anxiety or being a HSP and its hard for him to understand whats going on in other peoples heads). SO hearing someone else explain this feeling and actually have tips tp help me is amazing, thank you.
Please do more of these mental health advice-related videos! maybe do one on self-criticism?

Oh yes I need this.
Thank you for acknowledging chronic illness & chronic pain. When people say “everything is temporary” they don’t acknowledge that you can have a co-morbid situation, constant mental and physical pain is very difficult to deal with. You are so wonderful, thank you for this video

very true,I have long term depression, and chronic pain, which is ever present,so not all things are short term.
I’m constantly telling myself how grateful I am for physical norms. that I can walk without assistance, speak correctly, that I can see and hear. That I can take care of myself. I think all of this since watching others have strokes or other problems. It puts my gratitude on a whole new level.
Just wanna share this part of a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke: Let everything happen to you. Beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.
This was literally uploaded at the perfect time for me lol

I just came home from an AP History test and I’m feeling everything she’s mentioned in the video 😭💀
The "one thing at the time" has helped me soooooo much! And to just write everything down, like "ok instead of thinking about these 20 important things, what can I do NOW? What is STEP ONE?" and then focus 100% on that. When that is done, move to step two. And don't even dare THINK about the other steps! It's all written down, you'll get to it.
I can’t tell you how amazing your timing for this video was. I had a bad depression relapse today and this is precisely what I needed to hear. Thank you so much.
Loved this video! My emotions control me sometimes. Remembering it’s temporary should help me a lot because I tend to think the worst of all situations.
Could you maybe do a video on how to get through a break up as a highly sensitive person?
As someone who was diagnosed with multiple mental disorders, I've always felt so included and of value after I'd come to hear the advice and words from your heart that you'd share in your mental health/ psychology videos. I always took it best from you. Please consider making them again. You were such a light and encouragement to break the negativity attached to the horrible stigmas of society against Mental Health awareness. Thank you for the videos you've made too. They really do make a difference.
I just watched Shane Dawson's recent series and I'm SO happy that you clarified your qualifications before this discussion. He used a family therapist instead of an actual psychologist to discuss sociopaths which I find very problematic and sets us back YEARS with the stigma and honestly... unprofessional. The therapist even said "ew" and "icky" when discussing this uncontrollable mental disorder?! Long story short, you're the best Sarah, keep up the good content! ❤️
Starting a gratitude practice has absolutely changed my life. I write down things I'm grateful for every day - sometimes I'll space out and miss a couple days but that's alright! - and it can definitely be the smallest things that help make your life easier. Like you said, a soft blanket or a beanie to cover your head! It sounds so simple and silly but when your really put it into practice you'll notice how much it changes your perspective on your life and helps take some of the weight off your shoulders. Love this video!
This is an oldie but I'm a new subscriber to your channel! I've gone through some stuff and struggle and I came across this video and thought I would throw it on while I lay in bed since I couldnt sleep. I didn't fall asleep, hearing the whole video but by the end I was so much more relaxed and not as tense. I also had more to be grateful for and one of them was just being grateful to hear someone's advice and support. You've mentioned you've been on youtube for quite a while so I look forward to seeing what you've already posted and what's to come ! ❤ thankyou for this chat!
Uploaded at the exact time I needed this, thank you
Ahhh thanks for uploading this !!! Love you 💘
Wow Sarah, thank you so much for this video. You have no idea how much I needed to hear this! You have the ability to articulate these issues in ways that validate and comfort people who experience this as well. Seriously, thank you. This is advice that I will be using for the rest of my life. We love and support everything you do!
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO! I have felt so alone trying to understand this. I thought i was going crazy. I felt there was something wrong with me. You’ve shed so much light on this topic ❤️
I love this, Sarah. I am a HSP and have anxiety and I always have found that telling myself emotions are temporary really helpful. Thank you for this video! 💕
I just found your channel today & I feel like I found a goldmine. I've been watching your videos all day simply because you make me feel less anxious and alone. I feel like you aren't trying to be something perfect and well curated for the internet. I really respect you for that. I can't wait to watch all your videos.
I love love love your videos about HSP! Not many youtubers talk about this, but it feels so good to hear someone else´s experience and advice. I´m sensitive, and i´ve always felt alone. Thumbs up for shining a light in people like us
this was so helpful sarah, thank you so much! I have dealt with being highly sensitive and depression on and off for my entire life and I just recently made the phone call to talk to a therapist this week, and you played a big part in inspiring me to do it by teaching me not to be ashamed of who I am. Its exhausting to wake up and feel like you’re fighting against your own brain. thanks again, sarah, you are amazing ♥️♥️♥️
Really great advice and I'm grateful for the reminders you've given to help manage this complex existence of feeling too much. I've had therapists tell me similar things in the past, but something about the way you spoke about it in such an applicable way makes it feel possible to practice these things day to day. It can even be overwhelming to think about how you should implement mindfulness to better your own mental health, but this was calming and really really helpful. Thank you!
How in the world am I just now finding out you have other channels 🤦🏻♀️... I’m going to watch all of them in one day haha you’re such a beautiful human. Love all your videos ❤️. Sending you the biggest hug.
Wooow Sarah. This video couldn't have come at a better time. I just talked about exactly this with my therapist today! I've been trying to downplay my emotions and had a breakdown a few weeks ago because I didn't let myself feel my feelings. Thank you for this video! I definitely will try and do a gratitude journal, maybe built into my bullet journal and keep myself centered and present with that. Also I literally tell myself: this can't kill you. As strong as your emotions may feel sometimes, they can't kill me and I've always survived and gotten better again. I wish everyone just the best with their mental health, it's so important we talk about all of this more.
thank you for talking about this because I've felt so alone with this. I'm a highly emotional person and have always felt that I feel the feels more so than others around me and I do feel the emotions of others that I care about around me too! I've never really heard anybody talk about it before and I've never really felt like could talk about it with anyone either, because id feel like I sound crazy and over dramatic. It's nice to not feel so alone and these are definitely tips I'm going to be taking on board. also I completely relate to the whole working full time and dealing with this and that is currently where I am in my life and it is such a struggle to just push past it all. Thank you so much for this video. I found it so calming to watch, so helpful. I really needed this today. One thing I am grateful for today, is this video :)
I’m grateful for Sarah Hawkinson and and her super helpful videos 💗👍🏼
I honestly love your videos!! I feel so good with myself after I watch this, cause I’m used to get soooo overwhelmed by my life in general, I love your tips 💖
Thanks for this vid Sarah :) I’d love if you’d keep making videos like this. This was extremely helpful! Thank you for taking the time to make this, I appreciated it a lot!
SARAH, IT'S SO IMPORTANT AND RELATABLE TO ME !! thank you thank you thank you
Thank you for the insight Sarah. I especially love your thoughts on the practice of gratitude. I've been following you for years and love your channels :)
I don't think I've ever seen a video as helpful as this one. Thank you so much , Sarah 🤗
this has already helped me so much! Thank you, keep up the good work!
Your hair looks so healthy and shiny, I cant wait until mine is healthy againnnn. Also thank you for this video I am always beating myself up over little things and ugly things.
Thank you sm for this video Sarah
You have no idea how much I needed someone to understand and advice I feel like I can't handle it thank you so much ❤️❤️
Wow!!!! This is so relatable to me. I’m someone who feels emotions of others so deeply. I’m getting better at keeping a hold on my own emotions lately. The advice you shared are some things I already do but will most definitely be implementing the other things when my anxiety hinders my daily life. I love your videos and always seem to relate to you. Please do more, very interesting and helpful stuff💕
Needed this so badly. Thank you for sharing and I will absolutely use these tools!!
Thank you so much for this. I say all the time that "I feel it all" and just the other day I was having a VERY hard time processing everything. I will definitely keep your advice in mind the next time I get emotional. Thank you again 💖
Thank you for this! I have started reminding myself that emotions are temporary and it has worked for me too. I get so easily overwhelmed and it tires me down very easily. Depending on the situation I find that three things help me personally a lot: going outside for a walk or doing small yoga practices when I have enough energy. Distracting myself with my hobbies and interests like photography or gaming. When it's really bad I shut myself in the bathroom without any electrical lights on (maybe a candle) and just sits still or lie on the floor. Calming music also helps a lot as I react strongly to sounds (and smells and tastes).
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video
Thank you so much for this video. I work at this every day and it's just nice to know that I'm not alone.
Thank you so much for this video! I always feel like I’m too sensitive to be alive and it’s gets really hard so this video was perfect.
Blimy this helped me so much today, I really needed this. Great video!
I have never related so hard to a video. Thank you for this. 💕
Thank you so much for posting this video, I really needed it!
I am a HSP and have GAD and Panic disorder. I can completely empathize with everything you were talking about. You mentioned some things I practice and had some suggestions that I think will be really helpful for me. It is really nice to know that I am not alone in dealing with this crap hehe. Thank you so much.
I have definitely missed your psychology/mental health videos! I want for sure to see more of these 🙈 Some of these tips would work great for people who struggle with anxiety and stuff also ☺️ I am saving this for a day I really need this 💕
As someone who has BPD this video was a great reminder of healthier ways to process strong emotions and a bit of a reality check, thank you for talking about MH this is going into my favorites list x
I´m in shock cause almost 3 years ago I´ve been feeling that my emotions are stronger than another people and when I talk with my friends about it, its weird and I felt a little bit "weak" but the things that you said in this video are really certanly and smart so im so grateful to be here now, its my first time in your chanel and thanks. YOU TALK AMAZING AND VERY KIND.
Thanks so much! Great reminders for me to help me with the day to day.
This was so incredibly helpful Sarah! I respect your feelings about and decision to step away from psychology-related content, but I think you have a very healthy perspective on not necessarily psychological topics, but mental health and self care in general. Which I think can and should be separated in the media. I would love to see you dive deeper into sharing your experience with meditation and ways to cope with emotions! You’re by far my favorite Content Creator and I admire you so much! Thank you for your voice! 🌻

ALSO-I was writing this while listening to you talking and* I also find comfort in being reminded that I’m the smallest speck in the grand scheme of the universe!! Being in nature, on top of mountains or next to large bodies of water, bring me that comfort the quickest as well! DAMN IT FEELS GREAT TO BE SEEN
5:31 it does works. Every time I have a bad, terrible day I use to calm down telling to myself "you had a bad day, a day is 24 hrs, for tomorrow you'll be better". Obviously later I adapted it to other occasions, just putting deadlines on every bad moment helps a lot. Thanks Sarah!
I loved this video please do more!! It felt so casual and comforting
I totally understand where you are coming from. Its bloody hard! I am highly sensitive and am a empath.
This Video stop me crying and Crying so Hard at the same time , i just want to say THANK YOU for made a very worth video it’s helps me , because right now i am feel so bad with my self until watched this video... then i can accept with my emotions and feeling better :)
Exactly what I needed right now. I love how the universe works like that sometimes. Thank you for your words and thoughtful perspective 😊 xoxo
Great video Sarah! Love you girl.
this is the most a video has ever helped me thank you
I feel like I’m highly sensitive but just with my own emotions, I’ve never felt anyone else’s pain like you’ve explained but when I feel pain, joy, sadness - basically any emotion it’s just so overwhelming, feels like I’m riding a wave and it’s awful.
This was so helpful, thank you so much. I'm having real trouble dealing with my feelings lately. I wrote down your tips on my phone and i'm going to try them. I can't stand those feelings anymore
thank you sarah! this was really helpfull 💕
I really, really needed to hear this. Thank you so much.
I loved this video, I wouldn't say I'm a HSP but I have anxiety and a lot of these points are so useful to me! I would love to see more videos like this in this style.
I needed to see this. Thank you
Omg I related to this so much ty for this upload it was very helpful
♡ thank you this really helps me
this was amazing, Sarah
HSP myself and I find your advice very useful. I’m kind of doing similar things but I found it very helpful hearing it from another HSP put into their own words. Thank you so much for this video 🙏🏻
I am so exactly like you on this. So tough to function being so empathic and sensitive and emotional. Thank you for this video.
I really loved this video! Thank you!!!
This video helped me immensely. Thank you. 🙏🏼
After today at work i needed this thanks
Omg this could not have come at a better moment. Today I had a panic attack in front of my freaking manager. Then I cried & broke out in hives. Then I went home. Thank you for sharing your tips. ❤️
Thanks so much for this. My poppy (grandpa) passed away this May and we were so incredibly close. It has been a daily struggle ever since, teetering on the very edge having to hold back tears..whether it's me first waking up in the morning or randomly in the middle of work.
I really needed this
Yoooo I JUST watched a video on this topic and then you uploaded 😍
Thank you for this video ❤️
Saving this so I can listen to it when I need it
1. Temporary 2. Meditation 3. Grateful 5. Let go 8. Deal with stuff later 7. Find little moments to be at peace 23. You are tiny in this universe as well as your problems
I've been watching you for Y E A R S, and I feel like we've grown together. I used to be interested in the fashion and stuff you did but now my interests have matured into the same things you now talk about. fast fashion and self care etc. Every video these last like, 2/3 years have been so so perfectIy timed with my life. I graduated around the same time, I'm not using my degree either aha, I've recently moved in with my partner etc I feel like we've had very similar struggles too, this video is ringing very familiar. It makes me happy that we are growing up together haha xxxx
Thank you for using your platform for positivity 👏👏👏
I feel you girl ❤️
Awesome video, this kinda helped me, I'm getting a lot of this channel, gonna save this one.
I’m an HSP too and someone I know died and then someone else I know died and then someone I don’t know personally but watched his videos (Peeweetoms) died and it happened all in the same month, one within two days of each other and it was so hard to cope. It still is because it just happened but this video is so relatable and relevant. Thank you.
I needed this
I don’t know if things can trigger someone to become highly sensitive but after my mom passed away I could not control how I felt even the smallest things. It got so bad and I was unable to do my job properly and ended up quitting my job. I changed my work environment for a while and last year I was able to go back to my previous job and I’m better know. All my emotions were heightened and my anxiety got the best of me. There were days when I was driving and I felt like pulling over and crying or screaming.
Me: “this too, shall pass’ My Anxiety: “THIS TOO SHALL NOT FUCKIN PASS’ Love your videos 🖤
Your a unique person Sarah thank you for your advice my grandpa always use to say war is within yourself I think I get what he meant know
While watching this I thought, "I'm grateful Sarah is a kind, relatable human." 💜

Feel like you're literally me! I have an adrenaline phase where I have to try and burn it off. Like a big run or something. Other times I'm so tired and I adapt activities to things like walking, restorative yoga, bed, reading etc. To deal with obsessive thinking I journal everyday, thinking feeds the emotions... its a long process to regulate them... acceptance of the waves 🌊 🕊 ! Thanks so much for you're help
this is such a helpful video...thank you
I've learned the things you mentioned through meditation as well! i like philosophy and one of my favorite lecturers Alan Watts said something that stuck with me "So in the same way a muddy turbulent pool quiets itself when left alone, you have to know how to leave your mind alone. It will quiet itself" its from a lecture on youtube called The Mind - alan watts. ty for the video
this is so important
Thank You for this Video, it really helps.
This is very relatable for me as I have borderline personality disorder, which often causes you to be very sensitive and highly emotional. It sucks!
Even though people, who are interested in psychology topics can google these topics, you as an influencer can get these information to people who are not necessarily interested or would not google them by themselves. That is why I think it is important to talk about mental health with everyone!!! You never know who's mind you are changing... and i love your perspective overall. It is not new for me i watch all your videos either way.... I hope you find your way through your changing passions ❤️
I’m so happy you made a video on this topic. I’m currently reading The HSP’s Survival Guide and I definitely recommend it. Also, I identify as an empath as well and I was wondering what your views are on that term?
This is so important
Thanks for making this video, one HSP here too
When you said you won't talk about building walls had me wide eyed! Whhhyyy??? That's what I need help with as an empath: how to set boundaries without being apathetic
