How To: Cycle ABS System on Yamaha Super Tenere XT1200Z

Brief video showing the steps to cycle the abs pump on the Yamaha Super Tenere. You will want to do this when you are changing out the brake fluid on the front and rear, as you need to push out the old fluid and introduce new fluid. I am doing this on my 2013 Super Tenere, but it should be the same up to the most current at time of filming this video, the 2020.

Hi Every one. I need your help. When I use front brake the ABS lamp light. But the light is not sign when I use back brakes. I dont understand what happens. After I stop the motorbike the system stars from the beginning. Is anybody know how can I fix it?

I honestly do not know. Is the abs light on like during normal riding like there is a fault? If so I’d suspect that is why it will not cycle

About to do do my 2013. (15 K Miles) Do you recommend doing the ABS Pump first then the brakes, or does it matter? (I have 3 motorcycles so my Super 10 doesn't see the miles my others do. Plus I am now recovering from 2 broken legs and shattered feet. So not been riding for a while...) Good job on explaining it. My back brake is a little spongy and takes a pump on the brake pedal to bring it up. No ABS light though.

My experience and suggestion is to do the brakes front and rear with clean fluid, and then cycle the system a few times to get that clean fluid in there and push out the old fluid in there. I always use a brand new bottle when doing my street bikes and even with cycling the pump after new fluid is in there and then bleeding out the fluid from pump I always have extra.

Finally got around to doing mine and it worked perfectly! The rear brake was real spongy, but would pump up. Fluid was on the brown sugar side. Flushed both front and rear calipers until they came out clean gold fluid. Then cycled the ABS a few times and the rear brake pedal came back to normal. Thanks!

I changed the front and rear brake fluids using a vacuum pump... After that my abs light does not go off when I drive... is your procedure needed each time you change the brake fluid? Will that solve the problem that my abs isn't working anymore? It's a super ténéré model 2016. I already found it strange that although I used a vacuum pump at the calipers and took 100% care that the fluid reservoir was filled at all times so that no air could get sucked into the brake cylinder or hoses, that afterwards after closing the reservoir I had to engage the brake lever several times before the brakes got back the normal tension... It felt the same as if I had pushed back the pistons in the calipers when you change brake pads and you have to pump with the brake lever until the pads touch the discs...

Obviously with my 2016 super ténéré, as the kill switch is a combined kill and the starter button , pressing the start button starts the engine .... This procedure works for me.. ( put it in gear and leave the side stand down so it won't start) www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?threads/abs-bleeding-and-failures.10670/post-305757

When I did my front/rear brakes I also used a vacuum pump and I did not have any issues, but yes I did cycle the abs. The way I did my brakes was the following: Vacuum pump front brakes, starting with the longest run of brake line with I believe is the right side of bike. did that until it came out clean. Then I want onto the left side, which should only then have dirty fluid in the caliper. Bleed until clean. Bleed back brakes like normal. Ofcourse like you stated always keeping master cylinder full of fluid. Now that my lines are clean the abs pump though still has dirty fluid in it. Now cycle the abs pump to open it up and the idea is that it will pull in new fluid and push old fluid out. I cycled mine a few times just to make sure it had a good chance to cycle in new fluid. Bleed front and rear following steps above to get old abs pump fluid out. The issue with abs light on, I do not know specifically if cycling the system will solve your issue. I would definately cycle the abs pump and see if it atleast is working. Based on your description of having to pump a bit to build pressure again, it sounds like air may have been introduced into the system somehow. I know when i did the vacuum pump on the clutch, it didnt seal right and air got in so I had to reverse bleed it afterwards to push the air up. After that I started to add grease to the fitting so it was a better seal.

Wish I knew why I can not get the front brakes to bleed at all. Replaced the front master cylinder guts and that is primed, but front brakes will neither bleed normally or with vacuum kit. Nothing at all comes out on the first bleed, before ABS cycling.

That seems very odd! I have never had an issue bleeding them with a vacuum pump or reverse bleeding them.

I had an issue bleeding the brakes on a truck once, and ended up that the bleeder bolt was clogged. Quickly swapped the bolt with another I had and it bled just fine. I imagine with a smaller bleeder bolt like on the bikes, that this is very possible to happen to you.

If pump works doing this does this mean your abs pump is working. My abs light is on and abs is not working but when I do this the pump test flush it works.??so hence I think my pump is ok??and it's some other fault.

  • @joshmundy

This is my opinion but if you can trigger the pump to run with the steps in the video, then yes the pump does work. The pump though is a small portion of a more complicated system. I am assuming the abs light is on and doesnt turn off after reaching 10-15mph as it is supposed to? If not I would start by testing the abs sensors in the wheels.

As the title states, it cycles the abs pump for the brake system. Why - when you replace your fluid the old fluid is stuck in the ABS pump system and needs cycled to help pump it out and introduce fresh fluid
