how to cut Tri Tip steak | Jess Pryles
how to cut Tri Tip steak
Cutting your meat in the right direction can make ALL the difference between a tender bite, and one that's as chewy as old rubber boots. So it's pretty darn important to know how to slice and cut properly.
Tri Tip is one of the trickiest steak cuts to master slicing - a single muscle with a grain that shifts. Here's my method for finding the grain on a tri tip, and the correct way to slice it.

Hands down, this clip was the most simplistic and too the point explanation I have come across. Thank you
After watching 6 or 7 videos that left me uncertain on where to make the cuts, I finally found this one that explains and shows how to identify the grain. I love that she showed it on the raw and cooked piece of meat, and the picture with the grain and cut lines was really helpful. This is a new website for me, but I intend to check back often. Thanks for the tips.

So we'll done and helpful!
The best description I have seen on how to cut a tri tip. Cheers!
Finally someone did a perfect job explaining the proper way to cut against the grain. Thanks!
When you tugged on the meat, it showed the greatest visual explanation for chewing tenderness. Simple but effective. Of course I don't always have a piece of meat in my hands when trying to explain this to people. Maybe I should 😆 🥩
Thank you Jess! Today was the first time I felt comfortable and confident in slicing my own tri-tip.
I just want to say I appreciate your presence in your video. You have this level of joy when talking about the subject and I feel like it makes us happy just watching. Pretty awesome. Great video :)
Jess, you nailed it. Thank you big time.
Thank you Jess! Just keep flipping and just keep em coming! 🤠👍🥃
Sooooo glad I watched this. You made cutting a steak make sense. I'll be using this method to cut a tri tip before cooking. I'll marinate half in A-1 sauce, and the second half in teriyaki sauce for 24 hrs, and then grill them. They are incredible!!!
Great, concise and perfectly shown example. Great job.
Perfect video. Right pacing, good explanation with helpful lines and a demonstration. Just perfect. Thanks!
Great simple to understand short video. Thank you!
That was the best explanation I have ever seen! Thank you for your help.
This was the best video I’ve seen. The diagram was what I’ve been looking for! You’ve more than earned my Sub!!!
Great informative video! I appreciate the insight into cutting tri tip.
Watched a few other videos on this topic and this was the MOST helpful. Looking forward to impressing today's lunch guests!

This was so helpful thank you!!!
cuts came out great! thanks
Just keep flippin! Thanks for the tip!
Thank you, beautiful lady!! I am definitely adding your book to my wishlist. I can’t wait to learn more from you.
Short and sweet; very good visual pulling with the grain is like stretching a rubberband.
super helpful! thank you!
Great instructive video!
Thanks for doing this. It's EXACTLY what I was hoping to learn today. To the grill!
We love you Jess!!!!!! Do more videos please
Nice! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you immensely
Thank you sooo much!😋
The black line and blue lines are sooo helpful
This is great advice. Now I know how to cut tri-tip when I have house guests that I like or don't like.
great video Jess! I drew a very similar diagram on my dry erase board at work to explain this to my cooks. Tri tip is one of my favorite cuts of beef but it can be confusing to those unfamiliar with the grain of the meat. In the future I'll send my cooks to this video! -also send me some Lone Star beer in Kansas, its hard to find here :)
Thank you for that !!
I always wondered about this and you answered this question very well. Thank you. With that said, there’s a BBQ place I go to and they have really good TRITIP; however, it seems like the last 3 or 4 times I went there, their TRITIP has been a lot more chewy. Now that I saw this video, I am convinced that they are cutting along the grain and not against it.

Maybe they have a new chef that's not as experienced in cutting beef.
Love the thumbnail. Perfect explanation in a single picture.
Thank you!!
Watching this explanation has crystalized a practical plan. Even ground beef has a certain amount of chewiness, according to the fiber sizes. For someone who has trouble chewing, the fiber size needs to be very fine, akin to something like a hotdog. Most people appreciate a certain amount of chewiness, but for those with Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD, TMJD) to participate in a carnivore diet, they may need to use some specialized strategies. Thanks for the video!
Very informative video! Thanks for that. Also at 3:05 OMG that looks beautifully cooked! I think we'll be breaking in our smoker with a tri tip.
Great video!
Came across this video while searching how to properly cut tri-tip.....she's cute 🥰 now I gotta follow her videos 🤣
Thank you!
TY very much
I'm just now getting the hang of tri-tip, and got a great result last time, but messed up that second half of your cutting technique: got the long end right, but didn't rotate like that, bah! Thx for the help
Great job
Very good video
Im glad someone is going over this most people dont pay attention to this

And some who provide diagrams are inconsistent in their "artistry"
The best part about tri-tip is you get some short cuts and some longer cuts as well as medium and rare cuts. 805 Santa Maria at its best!
Oh what your with Hard Core Carnivore?! Haha that’s my GO TO Seasoning! Everyone I have ever served it to ALWAYS says it’s the best steak or tri tip and even prime rib! Best stuff EVER!
Jess, LOVE your channel. Question here, which end of the tri tip loin is the "chuck end/for steaks". Thanks, you rock it!
Thanks.
Thank you 🥩
Holy crap! I just smoked a TT last night with HC Black and you post this today. Incredible timing.
Thankyou
Cooked my first tri tip today and this video was super helpful!
I'm in love ❤️ 😍
Your accent was coming and going in this one. 🤣
This is the first video I've seen of yours Jess - Thank you for helping clearly show how it is done. My biggest question is where is your accent from?

I looked it up :) Born in Australia, living in Texas. Thanks for the great video!

Her accent sounds like a mix of Australian and American.

New Zealand?
Gorgeous and Australian!
Thank you from the guests at dinner lol
Can I cut it raw and cook s a steak?
Do I hear a bit of an Australian accent there?..Ha, i knew it. You look like a U.S Texan but every once in a while your pronunciation of certain words gives it away! I just decided to check your page. Good 👍 explanation. We love the tri tip roasts. I grind dry rosemary, course salt, granulated garlic and black pepper, rub it in and let set overnight then smoke to 118 internal , and sear on a cast iron. wrap with smoked wagu fat and sit for about 15 mins. Its so good it going to replace our prime rib Christmas dinner.
❤
Can I just swallow it whole instead so I won't get the cuts wrong.
Tha is for the great tip! Also your husband is a lucky man! Can’t find girls like you these days or maybe I’ve been looking in the wrong places lol!
Trusted
Good tutorial...cutting a tri tip correctly or incorrectly could mean an edible or inedible piece of meat. I like mine cut much thinner though
Great video and name Beef Chief😂
Nice demonstration on how not to destroy a great piece of meat!
cut to 2:44 for the thing you're searching for.
BEEF CHEIF! I love it. Great video 🥩❤️
cant tell if shes from australia or from america 🤔
Im still EXTREMELY CONFUSED why she has a hard Australian accent on some videos and zero accent on other videos like this one
Idk why I didn’t watch how to cut steak before
I hear a slight aussie accent?
Beef Commander in Chief
Do I hear an Australian accent being covered up? Nice explanation
Skip to 2:15…
You are cutting diagonal to the grain, not across. This is incorrect.
What do you call a cow with three legs… Tri tip
We call that part the donkey
Why is it that your accent goes in and out between a British one and a Southern one?
Why would u not cut it uncooked 🤦♂️
why are you only half british
You either want to be an aussie or American, sort it out Accent is all over the place
Her accent confused the hell out of me
what happened to your Oz accent ? keep it real.
