How to cut the TOP of your own hair with clippers and KEEP IT LONG!!!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video I show you how to cut the top of your own hair by picking it up with your fingers and cutting with the clippers. This is a safer technique for self haircutting than using scissors. A correctly aligned clipper blade will not cut skin. I also show another technique and a blending in technique.

Finally! Someone who knows and shows how to cut a guy's top and crown with only clippers! I was terrified of running the clippers through my top. Thought I'd end up bald. 🥴 Dry cut, back to front, starting with the longest guard then blending the sides down from the top in the direction of the hair growth (not against)...Who knew it was that easy? Awesome tutorial!

This was really helpfull as I was trying to grow the length on top and keeping the sides trimmed. The top was going thick in places but less so in others. Did the number 3 down on top with the number 2 down on the sides with a 2 and a 1 upwards on the sides and looked perfect. Made that untidy grow-out stage a thing of the past

Hey Michael, when you cut the side sections of the top, do you cut those at a bit of an angle, or even with the top?
@theoneminutebarber

Either way is acceptable. Cutting at an angle should give you a more rounded eventual shape while cutting square across the top gives a more box shape, obviously not a box but squarer on the sides.

You mention a number 3 guard but in your other video you mentioned mm so I think it would be useful to show that no 3 is 10mm; No 4 is 13mm; no.5 is 16mm; No 6 is 19mm; No 7 is 22mm and lastly no 8 is 25mm. These leave the hair longer the larger the size. Clippers seem to arrive some with the guards quoted as numbers and others as milimeters. I hope that solves the confusion. Thanks for all your videos during the Covid times. Quick question... if I was to use a number 3 guard on sides and the back, what number would be best for blending with the top in the inverted position around the parietal ridge? Sometimes using a 3 I feel is a little more forgiving for any mistakes of blending the top so I sometimes shave my sides with a 2 or 3 depending on how I feel I guess. Thanks again!

You could probably flip the three over and just use the three again. I think that's what I would do. If your not confident I'd use a 4 to start with. Thanks for watching Adam and good luck. 👍

@theoneminutebarber

Linda I would use the first method where you pinch the hair between the fingers, the cowlicks or double crown needs to be cut longer. Extra length will provide weight which will cause it to collapse if it's long enough. The double crown is a bit of a technical challenge. Good luck with it. And happy new year to you too Linda, I hope 2021 is good to you. ❤️🆕🌍
Could I use a 4# for the back and sides and cut the top with a 8# and then use this method by going with the grain and using a 4# and at the end use a 3# on the top sides just to take out the bolk and blend them with a down motion? Great video man.

1. How do we decide which of the 2 methods explained in the video to use to cut the top? What factors should we consider? 2. I was thinking about cutting the top with a number 16 guard (2 inch guard) instead of using the 2 methods you explained. I think that way it would not be too long nor too short, I can cut the hair evenly and it is easy to do. Do you think that would be a good idea instead of using the 2 methods explained in the video? Thank you very much for your help.

Do you have any commentary regarding using clippers on the top of your hair versus scissors ? That could be another video topic :)
@theoneminutebarber

Yes the main reason I did it that way was safety. It's just very difficult to cut your own hair in a mirror using scissors without cutting yourself. The clipper won't injure skin.
@kissme4492
3 жыл бұрын
Sorry maybe I worded my question wrong. I mean't a scissor hair cut on top versus a clipper cut...not safety related more of a barbering question. Some people use a machine all over and some like "Scissors on top ". What is your opinion ? I was always lead to believe a machine cut looks cheap while a scissor cut is more bespoke ...elegant looking ???
@theoneminutebarber
3 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree. A scissor cut is far more versatile. Normally I wouldn't use a clipper guard any longer than a #5. Even then I'm not a huge fan of a #5. It leaves a very uniform finish. If you want hair that flows and styles, scissor cut or razor cut is a better choice. If someone comes in and asks me for a crew cut I always try to overcompensate for the uniform look. So will make neat tapers and if there is straight lines anywhere they will be the cleanest lines I can achieve.
Is there any reason why this is better than just getting a longer clipper guard and running that through your hair?
@theoneminutebarber
24 күн бұрын
No real reason although it will probably be longer than the longest guard you have and not so uniform but a long guard works fine

Yes Christopher it's a zero. I should have said why I was cutting that way as apose to scissors in the video. Does it matter where you pick up your initial hair (for reference)? Like how about start with the front instead?
@theoneminutebarber
3 жыл бұрын
You can start at the front if you want but because most hair grows forward you can end up picking up hair from the section behind it. My recommendation would be to comb all the hair to one side first which makes it easier to pick up starting at the front.
I appreciate you showing the 2 methods. I'm surprised you were using a #3 on the top vs #4: personal preference? I'll have to give the comb method another try. I noticed that your hand wasn't parallel/square to the head when you did the sides but slightly curved, was that correct? I was under the impression you wanted to keep the square going across the top?
@theoneminutebarber
3 жыл бұрын
Quite a common method is creating a square shape. However the simplest cut of all time is the uniform layer where you lift at 90° to the scalp at every point of the scalp and cut to the exact same length. Similar to how a clipper gaurd cuts to the same length all over but just using the fingers to extend the length. That said 🙈 I wasn't intentionally doing that. Maybe subconsciously.
@brucewayne2091
3 жыл бұрын
@@theoneminutebarber It's funny as most 'cutting the top' videos say "keep the square" but when you watch the position of the fingers, there the same as yours. So level across the top on a line with the nose/crown & then slight curve doing the sides. I'll give it a shot

Hi, I watched your tutorial which I found quite useful, but wanted to ask you something: personally when I cut the top of my head's hair, I comb it sideways, not forward, because when I do it I have 2 problems: if I try to cut backwards then my hair will be very short. If I cut forward almost no hair is removed. So instead I cut it sideways (from left to right for example). Am I doing something wrong or is it that some people's hair grain is different? I mean it could grow on different directions on different people? Another thing to address is something called hair whorl. I have a couple of them and when I use the clipper over that area sometimes hair gets too short which makes the haircut look askew and awful. Do you have any tips for that too?
@yaguarete79

I think you are doing the right thing combing your hair to the side first. By doing that you are probably raising it enough to touch the blade and remove some bulk. Whorls and cows licks are very difficult to deal with. I feel I'd need to do two or three videos just to cover each one. Why does your hair have to be parted to the side to cut the top as such ? Couldn't you just comb it all forward then start trimming it from the back forward ? The reason I ask is when I try to pick up hair from a side part it happens at a 90 degree angle . Maybe my hair isn't long enough to do what yours does ? And are you choosing that side for a reason versus the other one ? Thanks !

Using a fake greenscreen effect for a video where _hair_ is the focus was kind of really dumb dude... Greenscreens are known for being bad with hair or uneven edges with fine detail, now these new "background changer" effects you get in stuff like zoom are even worse. Like you comb your hair and you're like "so you can see my hair" it's like... well I can see a blurry mess... Even your comb is just one big graphical artifact, the background remove has no idea what to do with it so it's just a big blur
