How to Cut Metal Evenly and Easily - Kevin Caron

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

From www.kevincaron.com - To create a new sculpture, artist Kevin Caron shows how he slices 5-inch square tubing evenly and easily with his chop saw, which provides a very clean cut, and a simple compass with soapstone for marking. In this free how-to video, Caron explains the effect of the saw kerf on the measurement and shows how he gets around it without a lot of math. Then he slices the steel using the chop saw (also known as a cold cut saw), as easily as slicing bread. Okay, I've recently started to work with small grinders. Smoothing out some rough welds ,and today I got to use a chopsaw-coldcut saw. The most helpfull thing I've seen on youtube. thanks for taking the time to show us rookies how its done. You should be on TV.

Wonderful results! Faced with a similar job, I took a piece of thin sheet metal and bent it into an L shape. The foot of the L fit into the cut and the vertical part of the L was the distance from the cut to the right face of the saw blade. Make a cut, loosen the stock, slide over until the sheet metal gage fits, tighten the vise, and cut. No measuring :-) Rick (Valley Metal)

This saw has been a work horse! No problems in the 5 or so years I have owned it. The blades can be expensive but you can resharpen them so they last a long time. I have tired the DeWalt that came with the machine as well as Continental from the saw shop and even a "Metal Devil" that I found at the Cheapo. All good blades with about the same life span on a sharpening job.

What metal cutting tool would you suggest for a person like me that works in the backyard with very close neighbors? I'm already self conscious about the noise from grinding metal, so I need a great way to make straight cuts that is quiet. (oxy acetyline is quite, but sloppy and I don't have a plasma cutter.) Great stuff Kevin!! Thanks!!

  • @KevincaronSculpture

True, but then I would have to make the index pin and the mounting hardware for it first. The other problem is when cutting this box tube it tends to flex a lot. Keeping it lined up becomes a problem. But I will look in to this idea again the next time I have something like this to do. Thanks for posting..

I was about to suggest creating an index jig to create equally spaced cuts. I think I would create a fixed jig just outside the saw table that would rest on the uncut part of the tube - then just move it over one kerf each time and cut, cut, cut......

The problem I found with this machine was the table is too soft. Lay a straight edge on the table with the metal sits and you will see the table is bent at the cutout for the saw blade. I had to keep that flat and it cuts better. Now I have an EVO 320 saw and don't have that problem anymore. Thank you for watching and posting.

I noticed a Porta-Cool in your shop. How well that work here in Arizona? I am 3.5 hours south of you and find swamp coolers stop being effective in the Monsoons. I also noticed that you could possibly do that cut in one slice if you rotated the material and held it in an angle iron support.

A suggestion if I may? In making such equally spaced cuts one might use an index pin instead of marking each cut. So complete the first cut on all sides then slide the work piece over until the hinged index pin falls into the first cut clamp the work piece and make the second cuts. Un-clamp, flip up the index pin, slide the work piece along until the index pin falls into the second cut, clamp, cut and continue on and on. With an index pin no marking is needed, it's quick and more accurate.

I use a lot of 1/8th inch. Will go to 1/4 for strength in the lower areas of large sculptures. If it is tall and outside and can't be bolted down then I use a verity of thickness. Start with 1/2th on the bottom and finish with 16 gauge on the top.

you mentioned rpm and gearing in your chopsaw that is equipped with a toothed metal cutting blade. how essential are these factors for blade lastability? attempted using a 10 in toothed metal cutting blade in my old Makita miter saw and the blade only managed 15 cuts through 1/8" 1 1/2 angle iron

  • @KevincaronSculpture

The wood cutting miter saw is turning too fast. Just burns up the blades. And going in the other direction, if you try cutting wood with a metal cutting saw you find it cuts slowly. You have to have the correct saw to run the blade.

By the way, since the cut is clean and straight, couldn't you use/build a stopper (don't know the technical term) with an horizontal slot like the one on the saw itself to move the tubing to the stopper each time you finish the cut as opposed to have to mark it again and again?

Maybe try feeding a little slower. I just use the weight of my hand to push the blade down. If you get lots of sparks then you are going to fast and the blade will overheat and dull out. I can get about 200 cuts out of a blade. Far cry from what they claim you can do but I think its worth it.

The Evo saw has been performing very well! Had a DeWalt before this and was happy for the most part with it. The table on the DeWalt is weaker than the Evo. Just have to remember that this type of was is slower than the abrasive style. If you give it a chance to cut it will last for a long time and do a very good job. I would point you towards the Evo.

I think your giving false information if you can’t make an accurate cut on one side of the mark at every inch you will have the same problem marking them one by one. This is an error in accuracy or your eyes. Try marking inch increments along the cutting bed then line your end of stock up at the far end trust me. Cheers John

Brian Wynn Some cold saw blades are rated at 180RPM Max- most likely a geared-head machine that runs 220V+, with work holding clamps on both sides of the blade AND constant saw tooth lubrication/cooling. Or I could just go horizontal bandsaw.

+Brian Wynn ..Right, it is a Carbide toothed chop-saw....$450-500 for the saw+1 blade...replacement blades start at $100-125....real 'Cold Saws' are about $5-6K to start...blades are tool steel, small teeth ground in, and can be re-sharpened many times....
