Advantages and Challenges of a Cold Cut Chopsaw - Kevin Caron

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Artist Kevin Caron explains why he uses a cold cut chopsaw when creating his sculptures ...
Caron got a lot of questions from his last how-to video about his chopsaw - a lot of guys hadn't seen that kind of cold cut saw. Most people are familiar with an abrasive blade. The problem with abrasive blades is that, if you push too hard when cutting with them, they flex, which can cause a curve in your cut instead of the perfectly straight cut you want. His chopsaw, which is sometimes called a "cold cut saw" or "dry cut saw," has a metal blade. He shows the teeth on a metal blade that just came back from the saw sharpener (it still has the protective wax coating on it). They put a little different pitch on the blade - a little different angle on the top and on the sides to help cut the metal better. The blade he is holding in his hand is a 102-tooth blade, while the one on the chopsaw is a 79-tooth blade. The one with 102 teeth is for harder metals, while the 79-tooth blade is for softer metals like aluminum. These metal blades cut much cleaner and straighter than the abrasive blades, but the blades run from $80 to more than $200. But you can sharpen each blade many times, and saw sharpening companies can actually weld new teeth onto a blade if you hit something hard or break off a tooth. With the abrasive blades, you have to just throw them away, although Caron uses them on his 7" and 4-1/2" angle grinders until they're too small to use. The saws themselves are different, too. The chopsaw that uses metal blades has a much bigger but slower motor. So you can't buy an abrasive blade chopsaw and put a metal blade on it, because it won't turn slowly enough [NOTE: NOT "FAST ENOUGH" AS IN THE VIDEO] - you'll just burn up the motor. Caron has already used his square to check the chopsaw's backstop to make sure it is 90 degrees to the blade. The saw doesn't have a very accurate way to line up the blade, so you can get a few degrees of variation, but using the square can compensate for that. Next, Caron clamps the pipe down. You want to just snug it up, then give it a 1/8 turn or so. If you over-torque it, you can push the backstop up away from the table and bend the table so your backstop is at an angle. Again, there goes your straight cut. Then Caron puts on his safety glasses and ear protection and cuts off the end of the pipe. He points out that he just used the weight of his hand to guide the chopsaw down - he wasn't pushing hard or applying much downward pressure it at all. If you see too many sparks, you know you are putting too much pressure on the blade, which just dulls it - or indicates it is dull. Using the cold cut chopsaw correctly, you get a smooth, clean cut on both sides. They're so clean, you could put the two pieces back together and weld them (some pieces you want to chamfer, or bevel, though). The metal-blade saw is a little slower and probably a little louder than the abrasive-blade saw, but it's a much cleaner, straighter cut. The kerf of the cut is about the same, but the cleaner cut is well worth it. For more how-to videos and to see Caron's sculpture, visit www.kevincaron.com

We have three of the dewalt saws at work and they work very well. When the fab shop decided they needed the one I had I ended up buying a Fein Slugger, after a few uses I noticed it outperforms the Dewalt and is more accurate, a lot smoother and quieter. Best part is they wanted to take it today and I could tell hands off I paid for it it's mine. He wasn't happy!

Hi Kevin, I just wanted to let you know I think I finally figured out what was glj g on with the makita saws I had. The first saw I bought blade or cutting head was not square to the base. It was off by about 3 degree's. The second saw I bought was also not square to the base but not as bad as the first one. The blade and head would travel perfectly horizontal but the blade was at an angle so when the blade got into the sides of the tubing the back side of the blade was being pushed against causing the blade to bend ever so slightly causing the gouge marks in the metal and always an unsquare cut. It's kind of like a compound cut on a mitre saw except the blade head is travelling straight up and down and the blade is at an angle.

I did check the bearing and near as I could tell there isn't any play, I did remove the blade and check the bearing. It looks seated properly but I can't say for sure. I googled reviews on the saw, about 200 or so and found 3 that say they had the same problem I'm having but no reason why. I've watched tour videos and followed your instructions so I don't think it's me. I've made around 30 cuts with it so I'm getting familiar with the saw and it doesn't matter how slow and easy I go it still makes a mess of the cut. The other videos I've watched of the saw the cuts turn out perfect. Given the blade isn't square to the base I can only assume this is part of the problem. Even my level says the blade is off from the base. All I can do is return it. I wish you could of seen the pictures. Thanks very much for your help and your videos, I've learned a lot and will continue to. I look forward to more videos.

Hi Kevin, thanks for all your videos as I've learned a lot from them! I have one question... if you wanted to cut a bunch of different random angles using angle, square tube, round tube and 6in x 1/4in flat plate, what saw would you get? I don't want an abrasive saw so I was looking into these cold cut saws as I like that they aren't quite as messy. I was also considering a horizontal band saw and compound mitre saws but have no experience yet with any of them. Just been using the trusty angle grinder up to this point. Thanks!

My friend recently bought a cold metal saw (rage) i believe was the name of it. Its a full miter slide saw. He spent a great amount of money on it. I had some previous experience with cold cut saw blades and im not a fan. Its loud theres hot metal chips that fly everywhere and i have to be standing there to do my work. Granted if you had something over 1/4"thick like some tubing this might be the tool you would want. I prefer my 64 1/2" horizontal bandsaw. I set turn it on and walk away. blades seem to last and when they break its only 15.00 bucks

base on it is cast aluminum and there is no flex at all, it very solid and rigid. Another problem I seem to be having is the blade wants to or appears to be jumping back and forth during the cut and leaving ridges in the metal instead of a smooth finish. I can't determine if this is from blade flex or play in the drive. During the cutting process there will be a steady and consistent sound of metal being cut and then all of a sudden there will be a very loud change in the sound of the blade cutting the metal. It occurs multiple times as I bring the blade down as you can see in the pictures. It makes very little difference how slow I go. I can take 30 seconds to cut a 2" x2"x 1/16 tubing or I can take 3 min, the results are the same. I will return it if you think that's what should happen. I just had nothing to compare it to so that's why I thought I would get your opinion. The square I used in the picture is highly accurate, new and checked for accuracy and is reliable. I did tighten the bolt 2 days ago but it did not tighten much, it is already quite tight and I can't find any play in the neck of the saw. Just in case you were wondering the blade kerf is. 07. The blade I'm using came with the saw and has 60 Teeth. I hope I gave you all the information you will need. I really appreciate your help as I really don't know anything about these saws and am at a loss if it's the saw, me or the blade. I I can't figure out how to get photos on here, im using my cell phone. Greg

I would return it! Sounds like you have a bad motor (the bearings or bushings are bad or not installed correctly) causing a wobble in the blade. Did you check to make sure the blade is installed correctly? Try this, with the saw unplugged! Pull the handle down and lock the blade in the storage position. Hold the blade so it can't turn and try lifting the blade and or push or pull the blade backwards and forwards. See if you feel any slop. From what you described there is a bad bearing in the motor.

Bending the table when you tighten the clamp is only a problem with the DeWalt, because it has a notoriously flimsy stamped deck. It's important to get the clamp tight enough that it's impossible for the work to slip, because a shift can wreck your blade and make your life unhappy in all other kinds of ways.

Thank you for the video Kevin. Would you please tell me what brand of blades you recommend? There is a big difference in price for metal cutting blades from different manufactures. As a hobbies I can afford to take a few minutes to file a burr off of a cut peace, if it means saving a few hundred dollars on the cost of a blade. Also, how careful are you with position the peace that you are cutting in the front to back direction? The manual for my Milwaukee saw talks about adjusting the position of the fence depending on the size of the peace but I don't really understand how important it is or how you should position a piece of U channel for example.

  • @KevincaronSculpture

I use Continental blades for the most part, that is what the saw shop carries. You are correct on the price of them, they are really out of the range of most folk. Check on Amazon for some cheaper blades and also call your local saw sharpening shops to see if they have used blades for sale. I get great prices on them here in Phoenix. As to positioning your metal in the vise for cutting, mostly they are talking about just getting a good tight clamp on it before you cut. When the metal comes loose in mid cut it will ruin the blade as well as scare the crap out of you !

If it is new and you just got it can you take it back? If not then you need to figure out where the problem is. The DeWalt I had was always off just a little because the bed would bend so the metal was not sitting flat and square. Maybe look where the "tower" attaches to the bed and see if it is loose or maybe not installed right. Send me some photos and maybe I can help.

Hey Kevin, I think I have the exact same chop saw as you do. I love it! do you ever notice if you're cutting something like one and a half inch square tube, the saw seems to not cut? or as if the saw is very dull? If I chuck up a piece of 1 inch round tube it slices it like butter, but the square tube it will basically take pressure to make it cut, and I don't like that of course. I had to cut some 3 inch square tube for a friend and I basically ruined a saw blade doing that. now I'm just trying to cut one and a quarter inch Square tube and it's feeling the same as when I was cutting his. and I don't want to ruin another hundred dollar blade. does it have something to do with the geometry?

  • @KevincaronSculpture

    @KevincaronSculpture

+Beach N Wheelchairs Yes it does!! The more you are cutting on a flat side the less pressure you have to put on the handle.. Anything more than just the weight of your hand will burn out the blade and you have to resharpen. When you are cutting something like the 3 inch square add a little piece of 1/4 by 1/4 under one side of the stock. That will keep the blade from having to cut a long flat side and make it cut better and last longer..

I would think an abrasive cutoff disk would be the only common way to cut carbide. The teeth on the cold cut blade are carbide and are not hard enough to cut carbide. You can get diamond abrasive disks on amazon. For thin tungsten carbide rods I often just hold them in a pair of needle nose pliers and twist until they snap. When cutting tungsten carbide it is important to wear a mask. If the dust gets into your lungs i can stay there for a long time.

I don't have the money to buy the Dewalt or other brands as they are more expensive than the makita. I think I'm just going to go back to a small bandsaw. The blades are cheap, I do t have chips flying all over the place etc. However I would appreciate your opinion on what you think what type of machine I should buy and the brand. Yes. The Evolution Rage 3 sliding compound miter saw uses the same principle, a 10" blade, and does all you're asking and more. It's on par with the Harbor Freight SCMS as far as build quality, and the clamping system leaves a little to be desired, but I've cut hundreds of feet of steel and stainless with mine and couldn't imagine not having it in my shop. It's portable, cuts quickly, and blades are only about $50. The Oshlun brand works very well. We've laid it over to do a 45°x45° cut in .5x2" cold rolled to make a triangular base to securely hold a cube on point. Weld quality fitup with no fuss.

Unfortunately Kevin there is absolutely no adjustment, it's frame is different than any other of the saws I looked at. It's pivot point is exactly the same design as say a 4x6 bandsaws and everything is cast aluminum. The fit is so tight there is no play at all. The only thing I could think of doing was machining the flange the blade rests on but I didn't feel confident doing that so I returned it. I'm looking at the evo saw you have but will have to save up a bit for that one. I watched your video on the evo and it does seem to be a very nice saw but the blades seem questionable which is no big deal. Does it cut square on the vertical plane? I don't want to buy one and have the same problem with the sides of the tubing being marked up and need to be ground down smooth and square. I do understand it can be made square horizontally. The chop saws are a great portable/cheap way of making angled cuts. The chop saws throw sparks, carbon disc powder, and hot metal all over the shop, and makes a mess. Wouldn't take much for a spark to find a flammable liquid or oily rag in most shops...smolder all day and come home to ashes. I don't think those fumes are great for you either. I find the blade warps if you push too hard and can affect your cutting accuracy. Also the noise is terrible, worse than a chain saw. I think a band saw is a much better way to go for accuracy, noise, and low toxicity. A good miter band saw will run about 3k, you can get a cheap Grizzly for around 600 but you will be sorry as you will have to move the vice to do angled cuts, and the hydraulic cylinders are crapola eventually leaking out and rendering the saw useless. Go with Ellis Saw or better.
