How to Cut Glass Tubing for PC Water Cooling Tutorial

Ғылым және технология

Here's a video on how I cut and polish the glass tubing in my builds. The glass tubing is 12mm mayhems borosilicate glass with 12mm bitspower black sparkle fittings.

Just finished a glass tubing build and this video was way harder than it needed to be. It's really simple. 1) Score the glass using the glass cutting tool. You can also just use a triangle file. 2) Wrap a wet paper towel around the tube where the score is. 3) Snap the tube while simultaneously pulling away 4) Use a propane or MAP torch (~$20 at your local hardware store), adjust the flame until you see two cones. Place the cut end over the tip of the inner blue flame and rotate the tube using pliers (obviously don't hold onto it) until it kinda starts glowing and the edge softens up. Hold the tube in the air for maybe 2 minutes before setting it down on a baking sheet. As the other comment noted-- flame polishing is way, way, way, way better than sanding. Not only will you not get glass dust in your lungs... the ends of the tube will look immaculate and it's a much faster process. oh, and it's way cooler too. As for prototyping with hard tubing first and then cutting all at once I didn't bother. The trick is to just go ahead and assemble the tubes into your loop as you're cutting them. No matter what you'll inevitably introduce some errors so measuring the needed lengths with your already cut tubes installed makes things way easier. Finally, don't buy glass tubes from water cooling sites. Aliexpress sells lab-grade borosilicate glass tubes that are *identical* to the mayhems stuff but at like $8/5 long tubes. You want 12mm OD tubes that are 1mm or 1.5mm thickness. As for bending the tubing... just go reaaaaaally slow.

I thought about using a map torch but was worried the ends would be deformed and cause a leak. Glad that worked for you.

@SuprUsr Stan you usually won't get pinholes unless you overheat your glass but you can tell when that happens pretty easily based on color. You can also leak check by sealing an end with a hand and filling with water to make sure you're solid.

@@SuprUsrStanmap gas is idea for bending glass. You can get creative as well if uou wanted to blow some sections adding a coil, bulbs are cool where it expands. If a corner flattens or deforms you can go back after it cools off heat the corner while blowing air in one end and capping the other and reform the shape and even improve corner flow so you don’t have multiple bottlenecks. Fun stuff only limited by imagination.

me as a glassblower i would recommend a small torch to smooth the edges and if you want to have bended glass just hit a glassblower up we all would be happy to do such a project

i only use glass and copper tubes in my builds now, one thing i like to point out, is that you should definitely use water when polishing those glass tubes, you do not wanna inhale those fine glass particles and dust, they can be really bad to your lungs.

might help a lot, if you use a wet and dry sand paper, add a little water, and polish it...water is extremly importante in glass polishing

I've had a few of the tubes crack in the fitting it's such a pain. Getting the cracked glass out is no easy task. Those gloves are really not sufficient for glass cutting, you need cut resistant gloves. Nitrile gloves aren't cut resistant. Nice video though, I didn't think many others out there were doing this.

I Stan, im searching for videos on glass tubing because its caught my attention and im considering it fir an upcoming build. Would you recommend going glass over pmma? How do glass tubes look after a year of use? Still look like new?

Nah glass is just too much effort, if you want glass like tubing go acrylic instead of PMMA or PETG. Glass will splinter and crack at the edges in the fittings as the you push and tug at the loop during cable rerouting and new GPU install. The cracks lead to water loss, even though you might not see the dripping leaks. I found that I had to top off the water a lot more often. It looks good but it’s a pain in the ass to deal with. I swapped back to acrylic a long time ago.

I’m working on my first water cooled build I’m obsessing over perfectly square and flat cuts. I’m using acrylic and a saw as well as the hand chamfer tool from EK. I’m been using the sandpaper to flatten the best I can but also using two levels to make sure the ends of the tube are level and flat. I feel like it’s taking forever and it’s a bit too cautious. Am I being too cautious?

Do NOT use sandpaper. You will end up with silicosis. Utterly unnecessary. Use the flame to do the work and a hot blob technique to cut the glass. FFS silicosis is a terrible way to die.

@@joeyh4590 Its not the sand paper dust as much as it is the glass dust. ALL glass sanding or grinding MUST ALWAYS be done using water at all times. With care and organized safety control over the "slurry" created. Wet glass dust can and will become dry and can become airborne later when disturbed... thus becoming an inhalation hazard. Proper grinding and sanding can be done and is done on glass... the key word being "proper". Strict care must be taken in all forms of this to reduce the chances of cross contamination and transference as well as airborne particulate chances.

That is NOT how its done. Use a diamond score to make an imprint cut, bunsen blob to drop into the score and it will cut without then need for break or creating EXTREMELY DANGEROUS GLASS POWDERS. Use the bunsen with a blowing point at the top of the burner to blow VERY small amounts of air, will blow the flame 45' away or so from you and too make a hotter flame, and use it to make the smooth edge. Make sure you stop the blower and turn the air at the base of the bunsen down and make a 'dirty' flame straight away and anneal the work. Done. /..... youre welcome. Try it. Im right. You are a noob.
