When I needed to cut an extreme angle last year, I remembered few years back, in a different video, you taught the same thing but in a “poor man” version, with a piece of wood cut at 45degree and placed against the fence. It definitely helped getting my job done!

Another great clip with useful info Richard. Thanks. While we're talking extreme angle jigs, I thought I'd just add a good thing to know I figured out from trial and error: When creating shadow boxes going up stairs, most of the time stairs incline at a 45 degree angle. That means the angles you need for your miters in this application are: 67.5 degrees and 22.5 degrees. With any one of these extreme angle jigs, you can hit those 67.5 degree extreme cuts spot-on every time. And of course the 22.5s are a piece of cake. PERFECT stair shadow boxes every time!

I did this in wood to splice 1 x 4" boards together when I had eight footers, and needed eleven foot lengths and another time when I built an a-frame stand thing for an outdoor swinging bench the wife had to have. I left the saw at 90 and built the fence to the angle needed - but this idea makes a jig that much more versatile. I called mine a Board Stretcher Jig when I made my first one.

I had to put in a coffered ceiling once. It involved a grid of cosmetic box beams with plywood squares set inside them. Then crown molding was mitered to fill the square recesses. At one point, the ceiling had some odd shapes and I had to fill in a coffered recess with an internal angle of about 30 degrees. The miter cut on the crown molding required a cut that was about 27" long. I was able to start the cut with the Dewalt miter saw but had to finish it with an old-fashioned carpenter's hand saw. The crown molding was foam rather than wood so it wasn't too bad.

Yup... And if you set your saw at 45° and put a square piece of plywood to the fence as an auxiliary fence you can cut both sides of the miter without ever pivoting your saw... put the first piece against the fence, and the second piece into the fence... it’s an old picture framers trick

As a trim carpenter, I used to run across a 45 degree inside corner for baseboard and shoe mold every once in a while. I figured out that if a made a 45 degree box and clamped it to my fence then set the miter to 22 1/2, it would give me the correct miter for the corner. This is certainly much better!

I take a 2x6/8 and cut a 45* angle on it, and then screw on a 1x4 to make a fence for taller trim. Since these angles are so few and far between I really couldn't see myself wasting the space on a permanent piece like that, but if I had to do this all of the time, then it's probably worth it just for the speed and accuracy.
