How to Cut and Fit New Stringers to a 1979 Centurion #jetboat
Getting these new stringers cut and fit to the hull of this jet boat is a big step for this project. I really wanted to take my time and be very methodical in the positioning, marking, and cutting of the new stringers. Since I chose to go back with a 2x6 stinger using CVG (Clear Vertical Grain) Douglas Fir, I had a fair amount invested in the lumber. The CVG wood is a good choice for this application because it has significantly less knotting, and is cut at a different angle to the tree as opposed to your standard lumber. This places the grain in a different direction from the wood which increases its strength greatly. Typically CVG is cut from older-growth wood in order to meet the knotting requirements, so it is also more compact in grain, and is much less prone to warping, bowing, or cupping. The main downside of CVG is its expense.
As a comparison, my stringers required 16’ boards. One 2x6x16 CVG Douglas Fir was around $140. Meanwhile, you can purchase a 2x6x16 Hem-Fir from the standard hardware store for around $20. (These prices were from the summer of 2022).
Since the cost of the wood is so high, I really was cautious and thoughtful when marking the stringers to fit the boat. There are a lot of talking points that I go over in this video that outlines how I chose to find the center point of the boat and how I chose the position of the stringers in the boat. I cover the methods that I used to mark the wood and make the cuts precisely.
I also address the locations of the water drains on the stringers, and how I deviated from the design of the previous stringers.
I ended up covering a lot more in this video than I expected. I initially planned on covering the installation and tabbing of the stringers in this video as well, but I felt that the video was getting too long. So I chose the cut this video into two sections. This video covers the positioning, cutting, and fitting of the stringers.
My next Jet Boat video will cover the installation, tabbing, and laminating of the stringers into the hull.
My goal is to try to keep the detail high in these videos, while also trying to keep them from getting too long and drawn out. I will try to break these videos down into smaller segments. So if you haven’t, I encourage you to subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications, so you can be notified of the new videos coming out. I hope that you find this series of videos to be helpful for your project, or just enjoyable to watch. If you have comments, suggestions, or tips that you would like to share please leave them in the comments section. I would love to hear what you have to say about the project and video…

    Man this is great to watch. Wish I could be doing the stringers in my boat myself, but lack of space and experience means a restoration shop is doing it. Hopefully they do work half as good as you!!

    Thank you. Don’t let experience stop you from taking on a new project. There is only one way to learn and get the experience… and that’s by diving in and getting your hands dirty. Now the space issue is harder to overcome! I CANNOT wait until I can get the boat out of my shop! I need the space badly… Hopefully your project goes smoothly For you and the shop doing the work. ~ Nick

    Great work I’ve been watching all your videos in preparation of doing stringers and potential problems that I may encounter on my 77 southwind 21’ mini day jet, my boat is currently a 1/4 stringer boat but wanting to put full stringers in. I see you’re a Washington boat as I am too in Bonney Lake

    Thanks Derrick! Small world. I am up in the Seattle area. Maybe someday we'll meet up on the water. Sounds like you're planning on a decent-sized project by going to the full stringer setup... You will have plenty of work to keep you busy for a while! Best of luck with your build! ~ Nick

    Hello, you mentioned the hull of the boat having a V shape and you cut on your inside measured line so the stringer was cut on the long side. After that did you cut the bottom of the stringer at an angle so it matches the angle of the bottom of the boat?

  • @AutoTechNick

    @AutoTechNick

    Жыл бұрын

    Excellent question Shane. After making my initial cut on the inside (long side) of the stringer, I then flipped the board over. Since I marked both sides of the wood, the mark for the outside was still present since it is the short side. I made my initial trim with a jig saw, by giving the blade a step angle. I then used my 8" grinder to grind the wood down to the mark. I did not remove any wood from the inside edge that I just cut. This is what gave my wood the bevel that I needed to match the shape of the hull. I cover this around the 17:09 mark in the video. ~ Nick
