I’ve been roofing for around 8 months now specifically slate using Vermont purple slate, old green slates, and PA black slate. I’ve come a very far way I have a drill a ripper a crowbar hammers of course and some other tools, would you suggest hand slate cutters? Or the stake, or the ground chop one? And also hammers does that truly matter should I go get the Stortz hammer for $130? If it’s worth it I’m interested in my craft! Let me know if you see this man thanks!

Been a slater for 44 years and it’s great to see a slater who knows what he’s doing on KZread ,only difference between this slater and myself is I still prefer to use my slate knife and stand to them cutters.

@@GunningGod I’m old school and was brought up with a slate knife and stand ,,but I do use hand cutter occasionally, but the trouble with hand cutters is that when you come across thick slates it’s hard work on the hands if your doing it all day, I do have what we call a guillotine which cuts pretty good as well,,not sure of its real name,,but the slate knife is the only one for me,, and as for the slate pick which is every slaters choice on how or what they can use best. I can’t get on with any metal handle slate pick and always use a wooden handle pick with a good point and a rounded head.,and also never buy budget tools if your planning on sticking to roofing, such as plugging chisels ,lead dressers, trowels ,and so on,,because if you only worked on modern roofs with all the crap plastic fittings a traditional slate roof will buckle ya.

Me too retired, I would like to see him cut some thick random ‘ ton ‘ slates with that cutter, no chance !!!! The slates sound soft to me and don’t think they’d have much ring to em. Use the tool for job, the good old slate knife !!!!!!

Man that tool sure is different from the one I used to cut slate, I can't imagine that thing works on variegated slate tho, right? Some of them things are damn near 2 inches thick. I've used my hatchet even to cut these banger (shale) slates , like with the old slate cutter I always used, you had to make the cut from the reverse side.

When your slating the cheeks on a dormer and your marking the bottom cuts where they meet them main roof, would that method also work then too??
