In Unreal Engine, you don't need to make the terrain higher. They let you dig into the terrain going to a negative y. I wonder if Unity will ever make that happen.

This is just a simple tutorial so that people can replicate and then they can add effects and other stuff later but if you want more details, I might make a video about this.

There are free texture assets on the unity asset store that you can use. You can try to find one there.
