How to Create Portraiture that is a Work of Art | Lindsay Adler

Ғылым және технология

Sponsored by: Canon, XRITE, Profoto and Tether Tools
Fashion photographer Lindsay Adler talks about her favorite approaches to creating conceptual, stylized portraits for her subjects including story-telling, styling, mood boards and more.
Lindsay then does a demo shoot showing how to create stylized images, a quick retouch, and see the finished image come to life in print.

She has good stuff. But key moment was when she said can't hire her without hair and make up getting done. It may have been a piece of cardboard, but who provided the dress, the hair styling session, and the make up job? It quickly becomes a head shots and pretty simple shots with a softbox without the props. In fashion it's rarely how you shoot, it's what you shoot. More people need to deconstruct how a photo was done. Now the idea of the head thing made from Ikea mats was really good. But is that photographer, or is it a stylist that already had that, or made it, or saw it some place else and made it? But if more people would learn to demystify photos they' would realize it's less about the picture taking and more of just together a collection of things to photograph. Like she said, get in front of more interesting things. But she has a super refreshing approach and personality for somebody that"s involved in the fashion side.

Lindsay says that photographers make all kinds of excuses like "I don't have the gear, it's where I live, etc". I live in a town of just over 1,000 in one of the poorest counties in my state, and no one wants to spend over $50 on their portraits. So, I call my county, "The $50 and a disc" county. People wanting their portraits done in my county usually ask others on those Facebook yard sale sites "Can you recommend a good photographer who is cheap?" And you'll see the momtographers who shoot everything in Program mode just flock to those pages and flood that post with their photography Facebook page links. So, needless to say, though I'd love to do portraits, I'm kind of stuck right now just photographing local car shows in the Summer or family events.

Most businesses have competition so you can add your excuse to the list Lindsay was talking about. ;) I recommend "specializing" in a very specific type of photography to stand out among the competition. Just like the medical profession, people want specialists even if in the same field.

Hi Lindsay.. My name's Herman from Indonesia. I am a photographer passion in fashion. Do you use EF 24-105L F.4 first generation or mark ii? I use first generation EF 24-105L F.4 with canon 77D and M50, but i feel like it's not sharp enough sometimes.. and usually out of focus. Is a full frame camera will make a different for sharpness? As I know, you are using Canon 5D. If you dont mind answering my question. Thank u.

I continue to be surprised at how much more difficult cinematography is and no one cares because the work gets the attention, however in professional portraiture the artist gets the focus and the models are “props”. It is an ego based craft....of course that just my opinion. Still an amazing lecture.

The colour checker is great! But once it's done it's thing you can use Vectorscopes and histograms for colours. Look up vectorscopes skin tones, you will see a lot of video editors using them to make sure the colours are correct and skin tones are in in the right area. Also find someone you trust has a good judgement and ask them if they think the colour is off in any way. Remememer just because the colours are correct, doesn't mean it's good. It's just best to start off neutral when colour grading.
