How to Create Greeting Cards to Sell

Creating a line of greeting cards to sell out of a series of drawings or paintings is a great way that many artists make passive income, which can be key to a thriving career as an artist.
Today I'm first going to discuss a little bit about I chose to make these Happy Hawai'i greeting cards (since they are quite different than the paintings I usually create!) in hopes of inspiring you to look around for opportunities to offer something reproducible within your own art business. Next I'll share my step-by-step approach to digitizing and formatting both the greeting cards as well as the logo'd insert and sourcing packaging.
As artists we love to make things with our own hands. However if everything we make money on is original and made by hand then there is a limit to how many pieces we can sell. Conversely, if we find ways to sell art reproductions or products (or even better, find ways to have other people/businesses sell our products for us!) then the potential for income is as infinite as the popularity of the item.

So glad I found your channel, and so much helpful, wise, down-to-earth art info here! I searched for card-making and selling, found this vid, and it is great! I’m (finally!) getting to turn the art I’ve been doing for years into a business as well, and several art shops and galleries have suggested that some of my art (I do a lot of free-hand mandalas) lends itself well to cards. This is a fantastic explanation of things I needed to know more about! I’ve spent quite a while this morning looking at more of your vids, and they are so good! Thanks a million!

Kudos for opting eco friendly! www.nashvillewraps.com/search?q=Biodegradable+Cellophane+Bags&Classes.Id=52&Categories.Id=6&Attributes.Sizes=5+x+7%22 As far as a barcode goes, the benefit of having individuals codes is for inventory. Will you have another way of keeping track which cards are needing to be restocked/more popular so you can orchestrate your biz efficiently? Make sure if you do have an alternate way it in not an extra step for the retailer. You want to make selling your cards very easy and appealing to them - no high maintenance :)

Caleigh Bird Art that's fair enough, it's cool that you're in some shops though! In my previous job I worked in a small shop where we sold a lot of cards and quite often would get people enquiring if we were interested in selling their cards. I wasn't in charge of making those decisions but I'd often get the phone calls and pass them on to the managers. We did have the freedom to sign up with new small suppliers but the managers tried not to have too many different suppliers because it complicated things a bit. I wonder if it'd work well if a few different independent artists banded together to make a group to distribute their cards together

  • @CaleighBirdArt

Nope I shut it down when I left Hawai'i. I didn't get a lot of website sales, mostly just in shops, so it was sort of too much to keep up with once I left as far as maintaining inventory. It was not an easy decision, but this past year I have downsized certain aspects of my biz in order to concentrate on parts that are the most fruitful and unfortunately that was one of them. I know I have a few packs leftover so I'll take a look around and see if I can find one for you. So sorry to disappoint! I really wish it would have been more economical to keep them going

Great suggestion! Unfortunately I think in inches so my conversions might be off. There are inch to cm convertors online that may help you out with my videos though:) Thanks for watching!

I'll try, what do you mean? Just follow the links I've provided to purchase a UPC number then transfer it into a barcode .jpeg that you can upload onto anything. Make sense?

@@CaleighBirdArt yeah, found that out after I commented. but now I'm concerned rather it'll work on all 50 states and if it is reputable.

@@quiettornado1970 Well you got me there ;) I was looking for an inexpensive way to do it, but maybe if you went with a bigger/better known company it can be guaranteed or something. So far the small shops I have my cards in haven't said anything so I'm assuming it's working at least locally. If you find out any better info let me know and I'll add it in the description :):)
