In this video I create an oil painting in my studio, focussing on creating depth in the scene. Here I'm adhering to 3 do's and avoiding 3 don'ts. I focus on the tonal values, the colour and liner perspective to create the illusion of space. Follow along, and check out the full version only on Tisch Academy! tisch.academy

Hey Mike, the only person one should compare themselves to is oneself. I signed up to the Tisch Academy, and I recommend you check it out. It's worth it.
It's a very generous person who gives away knowledge for free. Thanks Andrew.
The realism is off the charts.
Thanks Tisch. In SCUBA diving I learned that as you go deeper ROYGBV-RED, ORANGE,YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE AND LASTLY VIOLET are the colors as you go deeper your world takes on or loses in that sequence. (So do not wear a watch with red hands). Atmosphere is primarily water-humidity so of course the same is true. I wonder how it appears on planets with no atmosphere? I do mostly portraits but the same principles apply.

That's a really interesting point, I've noticed this too! I've done a bit of spearfishing, as you bring some fish to the surface, their colours get even brighter!

I remember as a newbie suba diver, I thought my little flashlite batteries were dying - the light always had a reddish glow! Plus when you do a night dive OMG the colors!
Thank you for sharing. Love your videos and am happy you got your studio back up and running.

👋Hi Andrew, your explanations are always very helpful, I really appreciate them. I also follow your every brushstroke with a keen eye, hoping that someday I will be able to paint at least a little closer to your level of excellence. Oh my, wishful thinking. Even from the smallest snippets of your videos one learns a lot and I am very grateful to you for these educational and informative tutorials. Heartfelt thanks, stay healthy and have a great weekend with your family.💖
Love your painting Andrew. Your help is always appreciated. Still learning a lot even after 50 years of painting. Cheers Chris
Hi Andrew, fantastic video full of fundamental tips, so we don't stray from the right path....on behalf of everyone who has the pleasure and luck of being able to "drink" your wisdom, thank you very much. Ps: I'm very happy to see this studio with this excellent space, working again! Congratulations
Beyond your painting skills, your patience is just as admirable. Your paintings are absolutely beautiful. Thank you
Blessing to you and your family as you settle in back in your new/old place. I hope you do well and find a way to keep it warm in the cold months. Thanks for your artistic input. I have all my class keeping up with you. Hugs, Diana

Where were you for two months... missed your videos sir ...i have improved a lot thanks to you ...keep on going
Another impressive video, Andrew. Thank you for sharing.
Andrew, this is great advice. I never consciously consider these things, even though I get it right at times, it helps when you break down the reasoning of why things do or won't create depth, especially helpful for improvised art
You are such a great teacher!
Simply beautiful Andrew👍❤️🇺🇸
A true master in action! I am blown away every time. I've purchased some of his tutorials and they are amazing! Please continue sharing your knowledge with us. ❤

Thank you for your excellent advice and work !
I find that habits are hard to break. But with each attempt of another painting, I strive to break a bad habit. My biggest problem at the moment is toning down the colors in the distance, to achieve that far away look. I do thank you for what you post on here, because it allows me to dare challenge myself to do more landscapes. I’m more of a “people need to be in my art” kind of person, so this is a different route for me to take.
I just joined your class online. I can't wait to start
Loved this one thank you Andrew! Have fun being back in the mighty Lawrence!

when I want to turn off my brain and relax I watch your videos. when I want to turn it on and learn... I also watch your videos
I trained my self by Andrews work, who knows one day I will show him, thanks a lot inspired me a lot from the construction field.
Mesmerizing
thank you for your Description with the the depth. I found it very interesting 🔥
Absolutely lovely painting. I think at first listen, these dos and don'ts can sound a bit simplistic, but I really quite appreciate that even then, they are still the things that are easiest to forget about. *Obviously* we should think about base drawing + perspective, tones, and colours, yet somehow they are also the things most people mess up and only realise when it is too late to easily adjust. :)
I'm going to need to watch this multiple times to digest it all. Thanks!
Very informative,thanks a bunch.😊
Thank you for this demo, it will be a beautiful painting, I don’t know how you part with them.

Fabulous and thanks!
Wow, that's an amazing landscape Andrew! You are such an awesome and gifted artist. Thank you for sharing your tips! I'm both an oil painter and recently also have done gouache. I'm representational, but not as realistic as you are (maybe I'm not capable of it!). Sometimes it is challenging to get the right balance between a representational/moody and slightly abstracted feeling with a super loose style but have it read accurately at the same time. Do you know what I mean? I love John Singer Sargent but I also love Turner.... both were such a masters of conveying a scene with only a few perfectly placed strokes, and Turner's atmospheric effects were other-worldly! Thanks for the great video.

Painting mountainous scenes is a cheat code. I don't blame you. I live in a flat part of the US. I like the flat farm compositions. How do I create a strong sense of depth and composition when I don't have the diagonals of mountains to create movement.
Thank you ✨👌
Outstanding. I request you to come to the Himalayas. I like to see some of your works on Himalayan Mountains.

I have tried to paint but instead of being a relaxing activity I find myself incredibly stressed and unable to mix the colors I want to. Everything ends up being a few colors without shading, lighting, or detail which just makes the problem worse. I have lost all my desire to paint, one of my problems I might have as well is that I am currently using acrylic and have had a few people tell me that the style I paint is better suited for oil. I am hopeful but I don't have any desire to paint currently
How I email you

Hola Andrew de chile mira las pinturas de pintores chilenos lobos Alfaro y lobos Valdés padre e hijos coloristas con bonita pinceladas . Y Cortez Silva marinista . Dame tu opinión gracias
Hi, Andrew. I like a lot of your art, but sometimes, i dont like. Let me explain. When I see the result, I really now that is a great composition, colors, perspective... but when I see your paint in a close up, the texture apears, I dont like it, because in my work, I strugle against brush marks. Your texture remembers me the artis Arthur Nisio, a great artist, by the way. But I still learnir and re-learnirg a lot of your videos. Thank you and God bless you.
Oh have you moved south again?

Yes I have!
When I look at Your paintings, I laugh hard. Why,. Because I have become a vegetable at 46.
Do you know like how in the world of boxing they say Muhammad Ali is the greatest of all time? In our painting world you are my greatest of all time. I mean just listen to how clearly you explain art and how easy you make painting look.
Andrew has had some stinkers just like the rest of us,. Practice your techniques. Listen what he has to say and show us.
