@@backcountry164 The class and ancestry options are all free via archives of nethys (which is officially endorsed by Paizo), as well as everything mechanics wise. What isn't free is the lore books and adventures, which is how they make their money . Note I'm fairly new to Pathfinder myself but like the change of pace. People will still buy pdfs or books due to preference, but it's nice to know we have access to most recent stuff for free without pirating. Neat thing about path builder is that unless you're a build that uses familiars or pets you only need the free version, the paid is a one-time $5 or $6 depending on the platform (mobile or PC respectively). It’s not quite 100% free but is if you are making a basic character and not using certain variant rules. Building an animal companion or an Eidolon for your character is behind a paywall for example.

Notes: First, for optimizing remember that instead of the ancestry ability boosts and flaws you can now opt to take two ability boosts in the stats of your choice. Its core as of the 4th printing and your dreams of making a str/con kobold barbarian are realized. -Alignment is very important to champions and clerics and many classes have class based obligations called anathema . Beast barbarians have issues with weapons for example. -Sorcerers are wild because they pull from different spell lists depending on their bloodline. A Devil sorcerer pulls from the divine list, while a hag sorcerer pulls from the occult list.

The advantage fighters have is that they have +2 more to hit with weapons than all other martials, so they have a higher chance to hit and to crit from level 1-20. They start as experts in all weapons, while every other martial is only trained. And fighters are the only martials to become legendary in all weapons, most martials can only reach master proficiency in weapons. I think this also applies to armor, so they should have a constant +2 more AC than all other characters. EDIT: Correction, Armor legendary is with champion.

PF2e player here, the big difference from thaumaturge to fighter is threefold; survivability (how), damage options, and tactics. Thaumaturge is overall squishier, but can take the time to cherrypick spells for defense, or use the mirror and laugh at combat for their entire existance. They tend to deal in damage weaknesses, or create them, and are overall less tectically broad (from a tossling standpoint of melee). Fighter is THE crit machine beatstick of 2e. Its got your normal heavy armor and starts with and ends with better weapon proficiencies then anyone, its damage is from crits, buffs from allies, and often enough *tactical maneuvers*. The Fighter genuinely shines out as the highest DPS Class in pathfinder 2e and that's kind of its place in the system.

Barbarians (especially giant instinct) do generally do more damage than fighters except at higher levels against two weapon fighting builds, which is good because they trade a significant amount of defense for it. But yeah, the biggest drawback to Thaumaturge dpr is key ability Charisma and that damage from weakness isn't multiplied on a crit Edit: Oh, and max d8 weapon damage because of 1-handed requirements, which is offset by Implements Empowerment putting it equal to a d12 weapon in terms of average damage.

  • @themoistcrusader3262
    @themoistcrusader3262 Жыл бұрын

Id like to note that the thaumaturge is definitely not just a better fighter, fighter infact is commonly considered to be the best class in the game, this is due to a few reasons. A fighter will always have a higher proficiency in a weapon of their choice than any other character in the party, they start with expert proficiency in all weapons, gain master in a group of their choice at 5, legendary at 13. This means you have a +2 to hit over anyone else, and a +2 to crit. In addition fighters have accsess to 2 handed weapons, unlike the thaumaturge who is restricted to one handers. FIghter class feats are infinite use combat manuvers that often give good effects, such as combat grab where you make a strike, and if you hit you deal damage and grab the opponent in one action. There are more examples i could use but that should show the point im trying to make. Thaumaturges have immense utility and single target damage, they are by no means worse than the fighter, but battlefield control and critting more than you miss is the fighters whole thing.

About the aligment thing, funnily being neutral is optimal. There is aligment damage which is made by creatures of different planes, like devil making evil damage or Monitors dealing lawful damage. Usually is only a very little bit, being 1d6 extra damage at most (the only creature that i have see that has above that is a level 20 devil which had 2d6 evil damage). This damage type hurt you if you are the opposite aligment, but not if you are neutral or of that aligment, so being a true neutral makes you inmune to all aligment damage has long as you doesn't gain a weakness for any reason (like using spells to transform yourself in a demon). About items, usually the only times when there is a restriction is for items that lets you to do aligment damage, since it penalize you if you hold the item being of the opposite aligment (like for example if you have a holy rune in your weapon you become enfebleed 2 if your aligment is evil), and some divine spells uses your aligment or the aligment of your deity to determine is damage type. This all most of the time is fluff, but can have a little mechanical importance if you fight creatures of other planes. The Gamemaster guide has some optional rules about what to do if you think you don't want aligment to be in games and how to approach things like aligment damage in that case

So glad for those variant rules. Hate that True Neutral is suddenly mechanically optimal; some mechanics around alignment is fine, but immunity while still getting to deal alignment damage is a bit much. Also RIP Clerics of Neutral deities. I use the Moral Intentions variant for my games these days. Narrative support for character roleplaying, allows Clerics of Neutral deities to not be locked from half their class feats or spells, and removes cynical use of alignment. Would recommend. Edit: forgot to mention what the alignment system does to Clerics.

Just want to tack on 2 more instance of alignment making a mechanical impact: 1) The cantrip divine lance is limited if the deity you get your magic from is partially neutral and doesn't work at all if it is fully neutral. 2) Champions MUST be good or evil and so are vulnerable to at least one of those damage types. I think this is significant because champions are designed to be the most defensive class, so them not having access to the optimal defensive alignment is probably good for balance.

Fighters have a +2 to hit over every other martial (and to crit, fighters have like a 20-25% chance to crit wih no bonuses), arent restricted to a single one handed weapon and have more powerful combat focused feats along with not needing to exploit vulnerability for damage. All of this leads to fighters having more action economy for more consistent hits and crits leading to arguably the most conistently high DPR in the game, even if they dont benefit from the thaumaturge's exploit vulnerability. But do keep in mind, one of the most powerful thaumaturge feats allows them to *share the weakness from exploit vulnerability.* which works amazingly if you have a fighter that hits multiple times without combining damage for weakness, who benefits from it even more than you due to their higher accuracy, like a triple shot fighter using a bow. You optimize for teamwork in 5e too, but it really goes a lot further than putting down control spells in pf2e. No character should be thought of in a vacuum.

Sorcerer is a spontaneous spellcaster, which means they cast spells more similarly to 5e spellcasting. You know all your spells, you can cast them with whatever slot you have available. What's different is that you need to know a spell at each level you want to upcast it at. For example, I have three first level slots, I know magic missile and burning hands. I can cast either of those spells in whatever quantity or order I wish, where a wizard or cleric would have to prepare two level 1 magic missiles and one level 1 burning hands. However, if I want to cast a 2nd level magic missile, I have to learn magic missile as a 2nd level spell first. Sorcerer does also get signature spells though, which is one spell you pick per slot level that you can freely upcast (or downcast if you choose your 3rd level magic missile to be your signature for that level.) As for alignment, it is genuinely important for certain things, particularly for some classes but also because some effects only work on certain alignments. For example, there is good damage that can only harm evil creatures, or chaotic damage that can only harm lawful creatures

Fun fact Re: Alignment there are a few items in the game that can effectively only be used by certain alignments, but usually it only precludes the opposite alignment, like the holy rune which gives a penalty if an evil character attempts to wield a weapon with it. Additionally, Alignment damage only deals damage to creatures with the opposite alignment, so good damage only works on evil creatures, and chaotic damage (yes, that's a thing) only works on lawful creatures. These aren't particularly common outside of, like, devils, but it does mean that the "optimal" alignment is generally True Neutral, which is a little weird if I'm being honest.

Alignment should be picked based on the character you want to play, not based on optimization. That said, true neutral is optimal for most characters, since the most prominent thing that interacts with alignment is alignment damage. Alignment damage only affects creatures with an opposite alignment, so true neutral characters are immune. If you get powers from a deity, those options will be more likely to decide what alignment is optimal.

As for alignment, Pathfinder has alignment based damage. Lawful damage hurts chaotic creatures, chaotic hurts lawful, good hurts evil, and evil hurts good. Because of this, the spell "Divine Lance" has earned a bit of a nickname among the Pathfinder community: "Vibe Check." Basically, if you have that spell and a good-aligned deity, it is reasonable for you to cast it on every NPC you come across, and if it hurts them, immediately begin interrogating them on why they are evil.

Alignment mostly matters when fighting very alignment based entities. Demons for example are strong vs Good a lot of the time since they deal evil damage. Meanwhile celestials do the reverse. Being neutral in these situations means while they do less to you, you prob do less to them as well. Item wise I don't remember to many alignment restricted items. I do remember a goblet that if you're not chaotic is random in its effects while a chaotic person can pick its effects.

For alignment, the neutral alignments are better defensively, while the corner alignments are better offensively (but only for divine casters). This is because of the presence of alignment damage, a damage type that only harms people of the opposite alignment. If you're chaotic good, you can take evil damage and lawful damage, while a true neutral character takes none. Meanwhile, many divine spells deal alignment damage based on either your or your deity's alignment, and if you have two choices of damage you get to pick when you cast the spell. Because alignment damage is valuable for exploiting weaknesses, which can present a solid chunk of damage, it's good to have the versatility of multiple options for more enemies. (Also, some classes and subclasses can have alignment restrictions. Champion Tenets are the premier example.)

  • @cheezeofages

4:12 Alignment isn't as drastic a thing as in Curse of Strahd, but there are some items that care what alignment you are and alignment damage can only hurt you if you are the opposite one. So being neutral is good for not taking evil damage. Which isn't really as huge a deal as it's memed to be. Especially given how terrible being neutral can be for offense if you are a Divine caster. Offensively it can be drastically better for divine casters and their party members to be good as many great damage options for the divine list are Good damage AoEs, which wouldn't hurt non-evil allies. Plus some spells buff good and might hurt non-good (Radiant Heart of Devotion for example slightly buffs good in a large radius and anything else gets some debuffs, especially evil). Lots of good spell options like the Divine Lance cantrip and some aligned leveled spells are hard if not impossible to use if you are neutral.

In PF2e alignment is much more important. There are certain types of alignment damage that certain spells and creatures do that deal damage only to creatures of opposite alignments. On top of that some feats are restricted by alignment, deity worshipped (or lack thereof) or background. This is especially prevalent with clerics and champions who must be of certain alignments to get certain features or get their powers from specific deities.

"Thaumaturge seemed like a better fighter to me at first glance." No class is better than fighter. Fighter gets an additional +2 to all attacks above everyone else but the gunslinger, and the gunslinger only gets that with guns and crossbows. There is no competition. Honestly, the only class that I could argue to be a "better fighter" is the Swashbuckler, which is actually kinda more better rogue, but Confident Finisher's ability to deal half damage on a missed (but not critically missed) attack essentially means that they can deal at least half of 2d6 nearly every round. they effectively get a +8 to hit above a fighter with a d6 weapon.

2:33 "It (Thaumaturge) seemed like a better Fighter to me at first glance. I have no idea if that's true." I've built both in the past few days. Fighter is king of damage at level 1 because they *start* with Expert martial weapon proficiency instead of Trained, giving them +2 to hit over everyone else. With Power Attack they can spend two actions with a maul to do +9 to hit and 17 average damage at level 1. Thaumaturge has lower base DPS but annihilates anything with a weakness.

Thaumaturge is a "better fighter" when it comes to doing anything that isn't fighting, sure... but when it comes to actually giving out the hurt there's few classes that can get up there with the fighter, they get the best weapon proficiencies (aside from gunslingers using guns and crossbows, which are on par with fighters), going up to legendary, which is +2/+4 above every other class; and that's very significant as it increases their hit and crit rate (and thus DPR) by a significant amount. They also have a lot of feats that let them increase their DPR and just generally do cool (and effective!) stuff in combat. That's not to say Thaumaturge can't do the same, but fighter is one of the most efficient classes at it.

Nice, another one. Let's see what needs a remark: 0:25 Totally agreed on using Pathbuilder. I feel like we are outright pampered with all those goods tools. The limits only apply in rare cases. 1:20 Charizard is bigger then Ash, I would say at it should be large. Kobold Giant Instinct Barbarian maybe? 1:32 Just in case you wondered _where_ the One DnD Background design came from, you know they stole from the best! :) 2:02 Actually, "Standard Ability Score" toggle replaces your Ancestry Boost+Flaws with 2 Free Boosts of choice, like human. This is _not_ a optional rule, this is a core rule. Removing it would be the house rule. Just added last month with the 4th Errata/Reprint of the CRB. A bit hidden 4th CRB 26, in the sidebar. 2:33 Thaumatruge: Standard Martial Proficiencies, but with the Key stat not being on a Accuracy Stat will be 1 behind to hit half the levels. Specialties is finding Weaknesses in enemy, exploiting weaknesses in enemies and potentially make a personal one. Varies wildly by those implements. Favor 1-handed weapons, no shield, lots of attacks - so a bit hard to use in ranged combat. Fighter has both better Proficiencies then other Martials (only Gunslingers are as good) and a lot of feats for every fighting style except unarmed. But you can usually blend in other Fighting Styles with Archetypes. 3:40 You should cross rivers like Romans - don't swim or use boats. Make a Bridge and walk! 4:12 Neutral is the Optimal Alignment. Alignment Damage only works against the opposite Alignment. Good only hurts Evil. So neutral is immune to it all of them. But they also are usually only a side-dish on other attacks, so rarely worth worrying about. But there is a variant where anything but the exact same alignment takes damage. Good works against anything but good. It is nice for Clerics and Paladins, bad for everyone else :) Items with a Alignment restrictions like the Holy Avenger also work mostly against the opposite (Enfeebled 2 vs Evil)

"Thaumaturge seemed like a better fighter at first glance" Thaumaturge is for sure a good class and has some interesting things to do, but the Fighter is probably straight up the best basic martial full stop. They get experts in almost all weapons at level 1. That's a +2 to pretty much every attack compared to other martials, and their progression keeps them ahead of the pack as when others get to be experts in those same weapons, Fighters become Masters. Essentially Fighters just hit better than pretty much everyone else.

It's more that PF2e doesn't linguistically distinguish between Feats, Class Features and Racial Traits. For example, a 5e Ranger can choose between default feature X and Tasha's alternate feature Y. In PF2e terms, that Ranger would get a Ranger Feat at that level and those 2 options would be the only ones available at that level (though you may be able to go back and grab the other one later when you get another Ranger Feat and none of the new options appeal to you).

class critical stuff is still part of the class, so barbarians always rage, but a lot of important things are in your class feats and skill feats. You get about 10-11 class feats and 10-11 skill feats. Its like a "build your own subclass". You use the class feats for picking up the equivalent of multiclassing, here called archtypes.

Alignment is ridiculous and any GM that takes it seriously should not be allowed to GM. Like, who dictates Order versus Chaos? Who dictates Good versus Evil? If a party is fighting a foe who surrenders and begs for mercy, and one of those is a Champion that worships Torag, he HAS to kill that foe, regardless of the other party members' wishes. If he doesn't, PBBBLT! He loses his powers! You can't gamify morality!
