love your roof deck! We’re hoping to start building ours this weekend, is there anything you would’ve changed about your design if you could do it again?

Hey! Thanks so much. So yes, there are two things we wish we would have done differently. 1) We wish we would have installed a board to the very ends of all the plank edges, to stop them all from warping in different directions. 2) We wish we would have waited till the wood was fully dried, and then immidiately done the stain treatment. We waited almost a year to stain it, which resulted in multiple cycles of drying > getting wet > drying > getting wet. This, plus the fact that no board was installed at the very ends of the planks, resulted in the planks slightly warping in different directions. So now it has a bit of a piano key effect.

Looks awesome!! Have you done a speed test? How does it hold up?

You bet! Our top speed with the bus is 60mph (it has a governor) - no problems! We've also been in some pretty high winds (up to 40mph) - it's solid! I was a little worried it would put our back axle over weight, but the back axle is well underweight. It's max is 19,000 pounds and we're safe at 15,000. :) :)

What angles did you cut your 4 by 4 posts?

  • @ArtWeThereYet

Ooooh, not sure. The thing is, unless we have exactly the same bus, the angle is probably going to be different. Jose is going to sketch up a quick graphic to show how the posts were cut at the correct angle. We'll put it in the blog post that accompanies this video! 👊
