How To Create a Self-Duet Video in REAPER
Ғылым және технология
I've shot a few "self-duet" videos over the years and after some early false starts I figured out a few tricks. Now the video features of REAPER make it possible to edit a self-duet video quickly and easily. This video will take you through the steps.
The final result is this video: • Salomila (Self-Duet in...

Found myself nodding along with each next step, clear as mud to me, the novice, and laughing when you said, "remember..." 'cause I don't have the knowledge to forget in the first place. All in all, fascinating use of audio/video technology and musical talent to create something truly enjoyable and unimaginable just a few years ago. Look! It's Fran playing a duet with himself! How did he do that?

Me and the other me... Phrase of the year 2020. ;-) As another Reaper-User I can say "Very good Video"
Many thanks for this. It was a pleasure to watch the video because of your manner, and the clarity with which you explained how to go about this technique, and it was also highly educational. I have a question. If you had wanted to zoom in on a head shot at one point (let's say of you on the left of the screen), would you have had to split the video track of the 'you on the left', and then deselected the wipe effect, in order to only show that part of the video? If not, how would you have done this?
@homebrewedmusic
4 жыл бұрын
This is a very interesting question, one that I'm not really prepared to address. The REAPER video processor is basically an interpreter of a dedicated programming language, with parameters and operators that affect the display. I'd bet that with enough study and hacking around, maybe consulting with others on the REAPER discussion forum, you could figure out how to slide the wipe over while zooming - but I have no idea how to go about it. Sounds like a great project, though! Fran
Genius!

You can remove the audio from the video. I forget how. You may be able to just remove it but I think you have to separate them and then you can delete the audio track. Not necessary in your case but it can be useful at times.
@homebrewedmusic

I'm not sure how to delete audio separate from the video, but turning down the volume does the job for me. Fran
Sir, can you plz tell me how did you get the video window? I mean by pressing which shortcut keys you opened video window?
@franguidry

The standard shortcut key for the video window is Ctrl-Shift-V. You can see all the actions in REAPER by pressing the ? key, then you can search on a keyword like "video." Thanks for visiting, I hope you have fun with REAPER. Fran

Nice work! You mentioned that if you recorded from Reaper, it would make the process easier. I'm assuming you mean just the audio? Correct? I really want to start a few projects like this, but I don't know where to start. Thanks
@franguidry
4 жыл бұрын
Right, REAPER only captures audio. How to start?? 1. learn two parts to the song and practice with a click track. 2. figure out the staging so both players are within the field of view of the camera. 3. figure out the playback scenario. If you're doing two plugged-in DI parts you can playback on speaker, but if you're using a mic for an instrument or vocal you'll need headphone playback. If you want to hide the headphone you'll need ear buds. 4. Record first part with count-in and click. 5. Record second part. 6. Edit as shown in the video. Fran

I'm trying to add a singer between the two 'me's', and having great trouble. I can only see a horizontal wipe, which of course cuts the singer in half! Any ideas? The duet part is working fine, thanks for the tips. And I don't want to record the singer at the same time as one of the guitars, so that I can repair the guitar track in Reaper as needed.

Peter, I hope I can help. I would do this by shooting three clips with the three actors in their positions, left-center-right. I would lock the camera down and figure out the framing as described in the video and blog post above. Then load the clips into REAPER in that order. Put the video processor on the top clip (Left) and adjust the horizontal wipe so the Center actor is visible. Next put the video processor on the Center clip and adjust the horizontal wipe so the Right actor is visible. That should do it. Remember, you can choose the priority of the video tracks, either the top is most visible or the bottom is most visible. My description assumes top priority. If you need to really dig into video editing in REAPER you should be visiting the REAPER forum where they have a section on video mangling. There are threads on how to lots of cool tricks with the video processor - too much for my tired old brain but perhaps you can get some ideas. forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=236870 forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=213832 Hope that helps, Fran

I've worked that out, using the dials in the preset. Now to experiment. Thanks very much for your help, Fran!

Hi Fran, sorry to bother you again! I've followed the steps above: when I use the ''wipe pos'' dial at the top I can hide the figure on the right, but I can't find a way of hiding the figure on the left. If I use the 'left input'' dial, which is showing 0 to start with, it swings between -1 and 5 and the whole window goes black. I have to double click on the number to bring the 0 and the image back. So how do you move the left-hand edge inwards?
@franguidry
4 жыл бұрын
@@peterday2479 First, go to File/Project Settings. Select the Video tab. You can choose to have the "bottom" or highest numbered track have default visibility OR you can set the "top" or lowest numbered track to be visible. In my example select "lowest numbered tracks replace higher." Next, place the track with the Left artist in the first track, middle artist in second track, right artist in third track. Apply the video processor to the first track. Adjust the wipe so only the Left artist is visible. You should see the Middle artist. Apply the video processor to the second track. Adjust the horizontal wipe so the Right artist is visible. This process as described requires framing the three artist clips properly and also requires the order of visibility set as described above. Fran

Thank you so much!! This is exactly the Reaper tutorial I've been looking for. Most others cover music and MIDI recording, but there are few regarding video. I need to shoot a demo of my laser synth, with one cam on the projected image and another on the control desk to show what I'm doing, simultaneously. I assume that there is also a similar video in video option, as well. (Image overlay or Faded top 🤔) Reaper is also my MIDI DAW for recording my live controls onto a timeline, which is also part of the demo, as a screen capture. A mic will record my narration and a recorded song will be imported as a stereo musical accompaniment. This procedure is the last missing link to my final goal. 🙏🙏🙏
