How to Create a Quiz Timer in Articulate Storyline 360

Storyline can time quizzes, which means you can set how long someone has to take the quiz from start to finish. You may only sometimes want this, but it could help add some gamification to the quiz.
The ability to time the quiz is built right into the Storyline 360 player. It shows a countdown to the learner on the top right side of the player. You can have it display a countdown showing how much time the student has left, or you can show them how much time they have spent on the quiz.
So that is what comes out of the box. You can also use the slide elapsed time variable in Storyline to have something happen after a set time. This means you can get down to the question level and give the learner time to answer 1 question. I show you how to do all of that in this latest video.

I’m currently binge-watching your entire channel, and your website is next. Your videos are fantastic. If you get the urge, I’d love to see something on different off-the-beaten-path freeform quiz questions in Storyline.

Awesome to hear! My website is essentially my KZread channel videos so no need to do both. I do have my courses on Udemy as well which I do explain freeform questions but might be good to do that as a KZread video as well so I will put that idea in my backlog. Thanks!

Hi Jeff, thanks for your videos on timers. I'm creating my first course using Storyline and I wanted to use a timed activity. I had intended that the learner selects the "start timer" button and then does a task as quickly as possible. The task requires adding 3 words to input fields on the same slide. (I might have to change that to one word to simplify things, now that I think about it.) Anyway, I want the timer to count UP from when the Start Timer button triggers it to when the learner correctly inputs the final word (and the other two are also correct). I'm a beginner coder so can grasp what your code is doing, but not to the point of being about to change it to do what I'm hoping. I'm a bit stunned that this isn't something that a gazillion people would've wanted to do -- so maybe I can do it without script in Storyline and I just can't see that. But otherwise, would you have any suggestions? Also: will a javascript timer work even if I'm publishing it to Articulate Review for now? Thanks for any guidance for this keen newbie.

Yep JavaScript works on any browser so will work if you publish to review. The only other way I can see around not using JavaScript would to build a manual timer on a layer. So when the learner clicks start, it shows a layer, on the layer you update the number along the timeline so change the number each second, then at the end of the timeline of the layer, you direct or jump them somewhere else. Hope that makes sense.

Hi Sir, Thanks for your video, i just add timmer in my storyline game. Where i have change the milli seconds into seconds and then minutes. But then i check after 60 Second it becomes 61 second instead of 0. So, I have add one code so that after 60 sec it come 0 and then after 60 second again it will reset to 0. Now it is working fine. We just need to add javascript to loop seconds and minutes
