How To Create A One Of A Kind Leather Book Cover - Tooled Leather Book Cover
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In today’s video I will be creating a tooled leather book cover. The leather that I am using is from Montana Leather. It is the Vaqueta line of dyed Vegtan leather and is available in six colors and two weights of leather. You can purchase the leather in full sides or cut panels for your project needs. One of the great things about this leather is that you do not need to dye it. This saves time, mess, and money. I did use the antique finish from Fiebing’s to highlight the basket weave tooling design. Here is a link to the leather and other items used in today’s video.

I found that the dyed leather cases nicely and tools well. The color is crisp, clear and I think it turned out great. I will show you how to create the tooling pattern and each step of the process. If you did not want to tool leather then you could use the same design to create an easy gift.
Thanks for watching my videos today.

I loved this project and the detailed explanation of each of the steps you used. Thank you--I picked up a number of tips and had several questions answered as you explained your thoughts during the construction process. The description of how to tool the large basket weave pattern was excellent and might well be the first type of tooling I attempt once I try out that new skill.

Thanks great to hear. Give it a try. I’m sure you will do well.
I have done this pattern after watching Don Gonzales’ video. One thing I like to do on the inner panels is make them over size, glue them on then trim them back to the cover edge. This seems easier to get the edge perfect. And is easier than trying to line up the edges.

That is a better way of doing it. Take some of the stress of the project away.
Very neat Robert, came out really well.

Thanks! Have a great week.
I have watched a few videos with the basket weave tooling and i have to say, yours is definitely one of the best i have seen. the detail you get is really amazing. this project came out really nice. i made a bible cover for my mom and did it with the separate pieces, but i really like this single piece design a lot better. thank you for sharing.

Thanks! That is a high compliment. I have made Bible covers with panels as well. I think one works well with an all over pattern. The panels might be better with more picture type patterns.

@@InMyBusyLittleShop I think the picture patterns could work just as well doing it this way. i can just measure out a tooling area on the front and back and tool my pictures and then the rest can just be edge. i think i might make myself a bible cover using this method.

Looks amazing! Inspiring work thats for sure. I noticed your stitching technique was interesting with having both needles in the hole at the same time, I havent seen that before but if it works it works.

Thanks Jonas! Brugge!
I really enjoyed this video. No, "shorter" would have meant "less" content. Oh!,... and I see that you tried my suggestion and switched to packing tape instead of masking tape. You mentioned that the dimensions spread out a bit, but I'm pretty sure it would have been even more if you'd have used the masking tape. Another subtle tip, when you (if you) completely switch over to packing tape, you'll need to make your hits juuuuust a little bit harder (since the leather isn't expanding as much. Again, I'm mighty proud to see that you tried my suggestion.

Thanks. The edge beveling was the same large bevel that I used at the start of the basket weave pattern.

@@InMyBusyLittleShopyou think a guy who has something to say about how you run your tools “not to their liking “ would give a few helpful tips.🤷 me personally I don’t lift my beveler out of my cuts. I start out with my hand down and fingers out as far an I can. Then I just lighten up the downward pressure and slide it towards me after each tap. And then if I’m going away from me I start with the tool bunched up where my hand is down and lighten up the down pressure and slide away from me. Also get a rhythm with your taps and slide as you consistently tap with the same force unless your line is tapering off then lighten up the taps as it tappers off. Hope that makes sense. And helps

Thanks and I appreciate the amount of time to type out a message with suggestions. You know sometimes I’m somewhat unsure about making and producing some videos. Especially so with tooling. Everyone is watching me learn. Until February I only dabbled with some edge or overall field tooling. I do appreciate your suggestions and continue to work to get better so your suggestions are great. Have a great week!

@@InMyBusyLittleShopNo problem. Just keep at it. It will get better the more you do it. I posted a shot video on my channel to try to help show what I was talking about.
