How to Create a Custom Metal Stamp for Jewelry with Matthieu Chemineé

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Like jewelry-making itself, stamping spans centuries and cultures. Born in Paris, Matthieu Cheminée first encountered stamping at age 19 when he studied Navajo metalsmithing traditions in New Mexico. His passion grew to embrace West African techniques and inspired him to move to Mali. He studied Touareg, Fulani, and other methods and later co-founded The Toolbox Initiative to assist jewelers with limited resources. These experiences influenced Matthieu’s own designs and he developed Stampclastic, a technique that combines stamping and anticlastic forming. His latest book, The Art of Stamping, honors artisans in the American West and West Africa and includes step-by-step instructions for making stamps.
If you have an old jewelry file, you can make a stamp! To learn how and get started with stamping, join Matthieu at his bench pin for up-close, step-by-step demonstrations. In Part 1, he shows how to create a versatile triangle stamp from a used file, from initial shaping to adding texture and other details. In Part 2, he demonstrates potential designs. Grab a scrap of sheet and your files, and start experimenting!

Wow... I didn't expect to stumble upon your video! This is great! Andrew Berry recently introduced your new book, The Art of Stamping, and I downloaded the Kindle version. I found it very interesting and inspirational. I'm new to jewelry making in the bench jeweler's arena so I probably would never have thought about using old files to make stamps but now I can't wait to try it out. I save and repurpose everything so I'm sure I have something to work with. Thanks for sharing your artful skills! Cheers! 🙂

Sure wish you would use a different color of clay to display the stamp, black just doesn't show up clear. Neat idea about the old files. Like most crafts people I have a large box of old worn files that I just can't throw away.

I'm confused. Did you just stamp a sheet of steel? Wouldn't you have had to first re-harden (temper) the tool steel that you're using as a punch?

It would be nice to show the finished stamp rather than the impression. The metal catches the light and is easier to see than the plasticine. Thanks.
