I had such high hopes for M.O.M and was really disappointed to what they did to my boy Patrick Stewart! Thanks to Disney, all they do in their Marvel projects is just bait and switch, and if it’s bad, they blame us! Sometimes I feel thankful that Sony owns the rights to Spideman instead of Disney. We probably would’ve never had Spiderverse if that never happened!

A little thing that I appreciate about spider verse is that the lives and settings of alternate universes are treated with just as much respect and value as the 'main' universe. In Mumbattan, there's a scene where a building falls and threatens to flatten the cityscape below it. They could've just had it be a scene where we watch a city get flattened for dramatic effect while the characters watch, but instead they immediately scramble to stop the falling building and rescue people in its path. Even in an alternate universe, the people living there are treated with respect and everyone, even Miles does everything in their power to save them. It adds weight to the situation and even gives Miles a moment to feel proud of doing the right thing for people he's never met. That's one of my problems with Multiverse of Madness, the alternate universes just felt like setpieces that they could use to destroy things and kill off characters with no consequences to the main character.

I watched both movies in theaters as they released, and if I'm being honest, I forgot M.O.M existed. It just feels so dull and lifeless compared to the masterpiece that ATSV is. ATSV fleshes the idea so much better, while still having a great story and characters; and don't even get me started on ATSV's styles. I'd say watching M.O.M in theaters wasn't worth it, but watching ATSV was an amazing experience that I'd recommend to everyone.

I think another parallel is how they balanced character stories. MOM felt more like a Wanda movie with dr strange tagging along, like strange gets his development but it’s less impactful cuz it feels like a side story to other ppls adventures. I’d say spiderverse 2 managed to all the important characters equal weight, them being miles, gwen , and Miguel. Like somehow each character’s personal story just weaves seamlessly with eachother and bolsters the main conflict

from what ive seen from the concept art, and from what ive heard about what sam raimi was planning, i think this is a good example of a studio interfering with a directors vision for a movie (because that definitely always makes the movie a big success for the studio.) sam is such a good director, but if they werent gonna let him fufill his vision for the project, they really shouldn't have brought him on (as if they brought him on for more than just to have a big name director on the project)

Do studios interfere with a director's vision and that causes them to lose money, or do they interfere with a director's vision because it's already shitty and they attempt to fix it? This is something I'm never sure about when it comes to any given truly atrocious film.

  • @segevstormlord3713

    @segevstormlord3713

    Жыл бұрын

@@PengyDraws It varies. Sometimes the artist being left to his freedom will make the bestest thing ever. Sometimes, he really, really needs an editor, or a studio to come in and put constraints on him that force him to exercise his creativity. Others, his vision is great, and the studio's limitations are reasonable or creativity-inducing, and his ideas get better. Often, we assume his vision was great but the studio ruined it, and that probably happens _a lot._ But then there's the possibility his vision was stupid and the studio's interference was a different kind of stupid and it all compounded into an atrocious mess. Studio intervention can help or can hurt. Directors and writers can have great stuff that you shouldn't mess with, or could have a rough gem that needs refining, or could have garbage that a studio can force into being palatable. The difficulty for everyone involved in the process is figuring out who's right about whether THEIR vision, THEIR demands, will make things better or worse.

i really do hate when a movie neglects its characters. characters TELL the story. they need to feel human and be interesting instead of just feeling like a catalyst for the plot. M.O.M takes already established characters and throws them in the garbage while introducing new characters that have no substance. i really wanted M.O.M to be good because i really loved the first dr. strange film. on the flip side, hobie brown and pavtir prabhakar in ATSV both had WAY more impact and substance and they got barely any screentime. ATSV also builds upon already established characters. for example, peter b parker mending his relationship with MJ and having a child together because of miles not only develops peter, but gives us more of a reason to believe miles is a real hero

The difference between them is one of them is animated and has complete freedom to express itself in whatever artistic way it needs to be in order to tell a heartfelt and entertaining story made with love and passion... while the other is limited to CGI effects that are required to look "realistic" to fit the live action style, was made entirely for the sake of making money, and can't push the limits because "realistic" CGI effects are really really expensive. It has to conform to real life limitations that you don't need to worry about when making a stylized animated movie... not to mention the MCU's terrible writing streak they've been going through lately.

The thing is… the plot wasn’t actually tied to the multiverse. If you’re going to make a multiverse maybe form the story around it. ATSV did that with the canon events and showed why the multiverse needed to be present in the movie- to show how Miles was different from the other spider-people. In MOM it was just “oh no Wanda is chasing us watch out” “uh oh she beat up the Illuminati” (which also had no reason to exist)

  • @migssby

Im pretty sure a lot of people got blindsided because for one "Multiverse" is already such a deep and complicated concept. People expect the 'Multi' aspect. Not some small premise and snippets of these characters. Second, "Madness" is another heavy word to follow that. You expect your mind to be overwhelmed. They knew what they wanted to sell and underdelivered because they set plot goals in mind for almost everyone except the main character--establish the new hero Chavez and for her to win, Wanda becomes powerful, fanservice these other heroes, etc. They care about their roadmap and not independent stories. It was barely his movie.

That’s part of the beauty of animation. Making 3 distinct places that are still based on NY would be incredibly difficult in live action. Reasons why it’s stupid when people think animation is only for kids because you’re cutting of so many creative possibilities

For a movie called "Multiverse of Madness," they could've had a lot of fun establishing 2-4 different "other" universes, and then had major plot beats in each of them, with the collapse that is being caused by the dreamwalker being represented by elements of those different multiverses crossing over with each other, merging together, and half the time only the main characters even notice something is wrong. (See the Doctor Who episode where River averts a fixed point and you wind up with Caesar Winston Churchill riding maglev trains through pyramids for rough inspiration.) Maybe have Professor X offering to take America in...in MCU's prime universe. With some initial "Who are you?" "Well, I've never heard of you." "Then you've been living under a rock" sort of exchanges between the famous School for the Gifted and the Khamertaj sets. Play that up as a nod to the fourth wall while pretending they've always been together, then reveal that this was the first sign of imminent collapse because the School for the Gifted is from another universe. Maybe even hold off on the reveal of who the villain is long enough to make it seem like America is, herself, responsible for the collisions, and only with the reveal of the villain do they get to the 2-3 other plot points in other universes. Reveal PRof. X's universe is already gone, and have the closest he can come be arriving in the Illuminati 'verse, where he's mistaken for their Prof. X before they discover that the villain's already killed him. Maybe the tower of the Darkhold is in an intersticial space that can't be reached and can't exist without breaking down universal boundaries, so in the collided universe is where we start seeing pieces of its presence. The whole "Collapse the Universes" plot was a ploy to gain access to the Darkhold's primal form as much as anything else. Maybe the book version is destroyed just as early or earlier, prompting the need for this. In any event, tie the multiverse concept in to the Darkhold being cordoned off. And don't make the macguffin "good book" do nothing/be destroyed/lost like that. Maybe hint it exists but leave it vague whetehr it is real or not. Leave that, perhaps, as a plot for the Eternals to handle in a movie where they're helping fight to resolve the problems set up in this one.

The best parts of M.O.M. were the clearly Sam Raimi parts such as the predator chase Wanda scene, the music battle, or the Zombie Strange sequence. It's clear Disney's Marvel has become too creatively bankrupt with the corporate mandates as it seems they run on a formula instead of creative ideas. ATSV is a masterpiece because of the love to the source material and the synergy it has with different creative visions coming into one. Different artists, interpretations, artistic techniques are used simultaneous to tell the story which feels right for a comic book movie. Marvel used to be good at character writing but now even that is hit or miss, they've always had problems from a visual standpoint and its finally catching up with them as their stories become more bland.

To be fair, M.O.M was limited by the fact that it’s a live action movie, while ATS was animated, leading to a ridiculous difference in limitations on what’s possible with the concept of a different universe. I agree that live-action has a lot of limitations, but so does animation. You have to MAKE everything that you see in animation and it can be overwhelming. Also, look at old star wars movies or any of the old scifi/fantasy movies that use PROPS and not rushed CGI. I mean look at Guillermo deo Toro’s Pinocchio, it’s stop-motion animation, all of that was HANDMADE, all of those effects would be semi-achievable even if you replaced the puppet characters with real people. It’s just that story isn’t imaginative. The characters are bland. It’s soulless corporate cash grab that kills its creative team (ATSV has its own issues with overtime and overwork of their team, but even then it’s so much better than the industry standard which is horrific to me)

I'm actually planning to write a multiverse story myself. Though, it's a little different from the way Spiderverse handles it, with there being variations of the same character, Spiderman. I'm more for when multiverse create new and unique characters that don't really have any universal relation to one another. But still, I like Spiderverse, and I agree with everything you said here. Build up to it, play with the concept, don't be so limited, and try to be different from our own familiar universe. Which thankfully I'm doing/working on. Though, I have not created a secret society among the universes in my story (It could still happen, the story is still in its early stages).

i think one reason it didn't work as well in Dr. Strange 2 is because it's live-action, whereas spider-verse was able to utilize animation literally make everything look different. the vulture at the start has a cool papercraft aesthetic, and we see that apply to his dimension in the brief section of it we see. we never see Hobie's universe, but his character model constantly changes around, and it looks cool af. but of course (as always), the real enemy is corporate ownership and hatred of cooperation. All the film rights for marvel's IPs are scattered across half a dozen (or more) companies, so disney just couldn't utilize everyone as well as spider-verse did due to that. your points are great though, and i think the 2 aspects i listed only minimally impacted it.

I don’t think I get what you are saying beyond MoM not being “out there” enough. MoMs problem has always been that the film had no focus in its narrative. It was part about that weird girl being hunted through a few multiverses, part about Wanda wanting her kids and then part about Strange dealing with his delusions of grandeur. With all three plot lines getting equal amounts of attention but neither of which being told in one piece, so they compete for screen time all together at once. Spider-verse 2 was a lot more focused in comparison. First it’s about Miles feeling lonely, then it’s about him wanting to join the Spider society and then it’s about him trying to escape the Spider society to save his dad.

Can i add one thing to the Illuminati vs Spidemen bit? The characters in Spiderverse properly react to eachother, be it Pav immediately making his presence known, reaction to the tension between Gwen and Miles, Interacting with them both, Hobie teaching Miles about using his Palm, something he'll hint at miles later, since he had an idea on how Miles Conversation witb Miguel might go, Miguel's reaction to Hobie disrupting him every chance he gets, Miguel's disappointment immediately shifting to Gwen when he's tossing blame etc. The list goes on. Compared to that, the Illuminati tend to just, not do that? Like, when Reed and BB dies, they have the shocked expressions, but no anger or anything, back to their sas after a small gasp, jusf the definition of " oh no! Anyways." MOM doesnt feel like characters, just cameos for the sake of cameos.

the biggest difference between these two is the availability. MoM relies on their cameos to the point that the movie is completely empty if the viewer doesn't know who they are. spiderverse actually puts effort into the plot and is fun to watch even if (like me) you have no idea who any of the spiders in the background are. it's like trying to build an entire movie off of easter eggs

I love your video essay, on this because you spoke only the truth also, you were right Spider-Man across the spider verse, utilized the multi-verse concept went all out while Doctor Strange it didn’t go all up only went like 30% into it. Also, I didn’t like how how they brought Doctor Strange ex because it really didn’t add anything to the story the same thing with venom let there be Carnage and I keep him bring it back past love interest, but it doesn’t add any value nor helps push the plot I feel like strange, so they just moved on because her screen time could’ve been replace with it, expand upon the multi-verse or something that adds value to the story. Before I go, I want to leave you with this. On blackest night you let the light of the moon guide you to the very thing you love you doing never give up don’t let anyone get in the way Have a nice day. Stay safe and enjoy life

It's funny because ATSV felt more like a thematic sequel to No Way Home than MoM does. NWH ended with Peter Parker from Earth 19999 suffering greatly, losing pretty much everything in his life and having to start from scratch. It hurts, but we know it'll help Peter grow as a person. And then ATSV comes along and challenges that notion, "Must it happen the way it does? Does being Spider-Man truly mean to suffer?".

I knew for SURE that Spider-verse was doing the multiverse right when it Immediately adressed a complaint I had about MoM, that I held onto for years.. (there were MANY complaints, but this is the pertinent one) "The multiverse was so boring! It was just an excuse for some cameos and to kill our favorite characters for shock value! that sucked! Why didn't they show a universe where Dr. Strange was a T-Rex! That would have been epic! They totally could have done that!" Spider-Rex: exists. Me: SEE?! SEE?! THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE!

The MCU really has no reason to fail the multiverse concept this bad when they already have shows like Loki and What If. Loki and his variants are all more interesting than anything in M.O.M. We literally got alligator Loki, it's stupid and funny but it's more unique than "Dark Doctor Strange". And What If has stuff like Thor being a party God and him and Loki always being bros and captain Carter existing at all.
