Such a thorough video about using epoxy resin on mosaic work. I have been working in mosaics for about 6 years and just created a piece that will look much better with a resin coating. Your video is the best in explaining the process and takes away some of the "fear". Thank you!

Thank you julie! You did a very nice job of explaining how to use resin!!! My project is that I took glass shards and poured it onto my Mosaic as the background. Problem I had was how do I get all these glass shards off without them going everywhere. A suggestion was to pour resin on top of it so it would cause it to stick and then also seal it. Do you have thoughts on this?

I have used resin quite a bit in many projects. POI - the CO2 from the butane lighter , Small hand torch, and even exhaling directed through a straw all work well it is the CO2 that causes the bubbles to rise and pop much more than the breeze from blowing or heat from hair dryer.

I made a found things mosaic inside a frame (12X14?) using DAS to push in the uneven pieces large or flat. (buttons). I was considering epoxy to level it out. What do you think? Are there other products that would work?

What I wanted to ask you is… is it advisable to pour epoxy on the mosaic which is grouted to make it more secure. I always feel that some tiles, especially from the table edge tend to come off. Hi Prerna! Great to hear you're enjoying the videos. You can definitely pour resin on your tabletops, in fact they make a specific resin for tabletops that cures harder than the average resin. But let's go back a few steps....if you have pieces that are coming loose there are a few things to check first -- and then maybe you don't have to apply resin at all. (1) You want to make sure your substrate is prepped correctly. (2) You also want to make sure you're using the right adhesive for the tesserae you're working with, AND, (3) you're using enough adhesive to secure your pieces. I have a large (3’ X 3’) mosaic piece I just completed. It is fully framed in metal as it was intended to be hung on an outside wall. I am wanting to now to fully encase it in epoxy resin, build a mold to make the square into a round shape for a coffee table. My questions are: does the epoxy resin react with grout? I have large areas of grout and I am concerned with it mixing with the epoxy and making it look cloudy. The grout, although fairly thick in some areas, is fully cured. Should I seal the entire piece before pouring the epoxy? I am fine with starting with a thinner layer of epoxy and slowly building up to approximately 4 inches overall depth. The reason being, the piece has multiple levels of glass/ceramic providing dimension through it. Second question is will there be a problem with the epoxy and the metal frame? Any help would be appreciated. I have been working on this project for 3 years and would really not want to destroy it.

I included some crushed sea shells in a mosaic and prefer to use epoxy resin instead of grout. More experienced mosaic artists have advised against it because of issues with yellowing. It is a bistro table top and is a wedding gift. I think grout will ruin the beautiful textures. What do you think? I would really value your opinion. Thanks

Thanks so much Lisa! I'm glad you liked it. You have a couple options. The first option is to apply painter's tape to your edge which will keep the resin in the desired area of your piece. The second option would be to 'break the tension' by going over the border of your surface with resin then pour little by little within that area spreading the resin gently with a wood craft stick. Freshly mixed resin will spread quickly and freely, so it's better to pour little by little so you can try to control it. As for keeping your item level, I would suggest getting a level and laying it on the table you're working on first, and then on top of your piece. Have fun!

Hi . I have an important question. I covered some mosaic tiles for a couple of outside tables. They looked good and seemed to be ok until winter. Now the resin has cracked are lifting in places. Like you I did a layer at a time. And process as you. I also used a resin for exterior use. I'm not sure what I should do but try and peal off the resin and start again? I sure don't want to do this every spring. Is there a way to have the resin stay clear and un cracked. They are very beautiful pieces of work and I woykd hate to loose these. Otherwise I guess I have to put an acric top over them. I'm a display artist for a nature centre abd would like to resolve this problem. We even had special bases to put the mosaic tile disks into. The tops are to remain outside. We get -30 to 95 + here in Canada.

I'm not sure how to apply resin to my mosaic tile that I'm going to use as part of my backsplash tiles. The main tile is approx 9.5" x 11". When completed, the backsplashed area should measure approx 14" high x 29" wide. I don't know how to send a picture of my project to you but it's a picture tile of an Adobe hut with cactus, sand, sky, etc. This is the first time I've worked with glass so I'm not sure exactly what to do and how to do it. The mosaic itself is very uneven because I'm using crushed glass. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Andrea! Thank you for your kind words. GREAT to hear you're enjoying my videos! You don't have to grout your mosaic before pouring resin over it. It's personal preference. For instance, pieces such as smalti mosaic have much closer/touching tesserae, and aren't traditionally grouted. For the materials list, it's under the video in the description. Hi Donna! They make an epoxy resin specifically for tables. I don't know of a product that you could put over your existing resin to make it more scratch-resistant.🤔

Yes, I use resin on all of my mosaics. I make little treasure boxes and house numbers.

Thank you for making all of these videos. I'm so enamored with your skills and I like how you teach. I have never used resin but I want to put resin on several pieces that are tabletop but I have a few questions for prep before. Your mosaics look so clean before you added the resin. Do you use alcohol to clean tiles before you add resin and how long do you wait after cleaning the tiles one last time? It's so scary to know once I add the resin, I can't go back so I want them to look great before. On the pieces I am doing now (tabletops), I sealed the grout one day ago and the tiles don't look that clean bc they still have a bit of grout. Also, all of my table tops have tessera that are uneven so do I still follow the same steps even though the pieces are uneven?

Before I added the resin I made sure to wipe off any grout dust with an old chip brush, and then if there's any grout haze you can clean off the tesserae with vinegar (clear) on a Q-tip. Avoid getting it on your grout. It dries rather quickly. The resin is self-leveling so you may need to add more resin to bring the surface of the resin above your uneven tesserae. Hi Mary Josephine! I've used resin on mosaic pendants which weren't grouted. My pieces of glass were flush against each other. It worked just fine. But by not grouting you do lose a bit of the detailing that grout so nicely provides. If you're pieces aren't touching/very close to each other, then your tesserae could look like they're floating in the resin. It's a fun look, but it may not be the look you were hoping for. Is epoxy a good alternative to grouting?Since grouting never gives me a clean finish on my woodbase glass mosaics art Does that make sense to pour epoxy first, then lay the glass mosaics on it and use epoxy as glue base when it becomes tacky? What are the tips if I want to use colored epoxy risen but don't want it to stick to the glass mosaics?

Hi Sandeep! Epoxy can be an alternative to grouting, if that's the look you're going for. Epoxy is a very different look from grout. You can use epoxy as an adhesive. Epoxy is permanent. So once you pour it over the top it's there for good. Keep creating and I'm glad you're here!🔥

I did a mosaic glass sink and want to put resin on it. Any suggestions for how to do that since the sink does not lie flat. Could I do a 1/4 then let it dry a little and then pivot it 1/4 at a time till done? Will it make a ridge between quarters if too dry? Help!

Hi Ami! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, you can definitely skip the grout and go right to the resin, you'll just be missing the groutline aesthetically. Hi Troy! I've applied thin and thick layers of resin to mosaic art. Some with an edge and most without. You're doing a table so you want the resin to be thick enough to cover the surface area but doesn't have to be a specific depth. The resin is quite hard once full cured. Just remember that resin is self-leveling so it spreads naturally and isn't self contained very easily. Tricky stuff. I would also make sure you use a resin specifically for tabletops, there's one listed below the video in the description. Sounds like a fun project! Keep creating and I'm glad you're here!⚡

Thank you for the great video! I have a question. I just created a mosaic tabletop and it is unleveled as the pieces I used are from broken plates and are not completely flat. I thought about using resin to level up the top but I am afraid it will get dirty easily. Do you have any advice? This table will be in the balcony with some plants on it so it is not the end of the world to keep it pretty but unleveled (if you think the resin might get dirty easily or will have sun damage). Hi Maya! Your table sounds fun!! Most resins do yellow when exposed to UV light, excessive water, and high temperatures. If it was my table, I'd have a piece of glass cut to the exact measurements of the tabletop and would rest it on top of the mosaic. Because it's uneven due to the tesserae I would add clear 'rubber bumpers' in lower spots. If that makes sense. Keep creating and I'm so glad you're here! 🔥

There's a tactic used to train horses they want to rush things, and go too fast before thinking first. It's called "Hurry up and wait." It's a mindset you enter the session with while addressing that issue. It's the mindset you teach the horse to use. Still let them hurry, but you're only hurrying to wait. "Hurry up and wait." It redirects the energy when you HAVE to go slow and be patient.

We put wood craft, butterfly flower heart… and so forth glued mosaic in it. Pour cement onto tray then , made the mistake , put wood Piece on top. Didn’t realize, 🥴, smooth part would be the bottom… Now we want to fill in wood figure with the tile, with the grout. Then put epoxy on top to make nice and clear. My question is is that a good idea? And if we put the Apoxsee on is it going to stick to the plastic mold? Are we going to ruin the finish Around the edges once a rip off the plastic mold?

Hi Cathleen! Yes, you can use resin on a coaster. It just won't have the affect as a coaster with exposed grout where moisture has the ability to 'soak into' the mosaic, if you know what I mean. Keep creating and I'm so glad you're here!🔥

Hi Jane! I wouldn't. UV light causes resin to yellow over time. You might be able to find a marine-level resin but still, over time it's going to yellow, but perhaps not as fast as common 'craft' resins. A resin'd paver sounds so amazing though! Keep creating and I'm glad you're here!🙌

Hi Rob, oooohhhh sounds like an interesting project! Well, epoxy will definitely give you a clear grout equivalent plus permanently cover your glass pieces. As long as your adhesive is dry, you can pour the resin over your piece. Keep in mind that resin flows freely and is hard to 'contain' -- if being poured in an area that doesn't have a hard 'edge.' Good luck, sounds fun!

@@JulieWeilbacher It doesn't have a hard edge; it's a mirror with glass mosaic on it, but no sides. What I'd really like to do is have resin just as a grout replacement, not atop the glass. Could I use a syringe to put it just between the pieces?

I've used epoxy resin for jewelry and no matter the brand, it turned yellow over time. So, I'm very concerned about ruining my mosaic pieces in the same way. I love the look, though.

Hi Kimberlee! Although I haven't personally experienced yellowing resin on my mosaic work, it seems UV light can be the cause. Many of the better-quality resins have a UV stabilizer built-in to help combat this problem. I agree, the look of the resin on mosaics is beautiful! Keep creating and I'm glad you're here!

Please use resin in a well ventilated space. Wear a respirator and glove up. You may not smell fumes but they are there until the resin is fully cured. Remove pets from the room too. See Aunty Tay for epoxy Poisoning.

Covering it is definitely not recommended in my opinion you can message her whole piece up! You have to do it in a space that there's no dust make sure there's no fans running and it should be fine I do it all the time.

Hi Helen! The foil cover doesn't touch the surface of the pieces and allows air to flow around them. It also keeps dust from settling on the resin as they cure. Keep creating!

Epoxy resin can be dangerous and protectice masks are needed when using it. Please talk about safety. It can have severe health consequences.
