Dr Watchman :) I love the way you used the The Spider Model (aka. Radar) to explain the concept of learning breadth not depth in medical school. Kinda reminded me of FIFA when they use the radar to demonstrate the abilities of each football player, it shows how lob sided their skill-set can be, and this is exactly what you are explaining here. A similar concept exists in cricket where you are labelled as an 'all-rounder' if you have abilities in all three domains, batting, balling and fielding. What you do for the medical community is amazing

Thanks, great comment. I hadn't heard of it called the spider model - useful to know. 😄

12:35 mark - I agree, note-making is v. time-consuming. Thanks a tonne for your shot at making the "ultimate set of notes." ZeroToFinals and Geeky Medics have to be my two favourite online sources.

Great insight especially about broadening you knowledge across multiple areas. I would look at our med schools past papers and tally what specialities came up again and again - usual suspects - cardio, gastro, womens health, resp etc and focus more of my time on these topics in the run-up to exams. Really useful insights! Can you please talk about the type of books that medical students should be using: class notes, review books, or textbooks? And the issue of not having enough time to cover textbooks vs. no enough explanations in review books/class notes.

Tom does the thinking so we don't have to! Gotta say I know it goes against the entire ethos of spaced repetition and everything, but many a student I am sure is googling "how to cram medicine" so if you have any insights about what to do in a short time frame that would be really appreciated!

Hey Tom what level would you say the MSRA is at? Med school finals or GP level? Would zero to finals be sufficient for doing well in the MSRA or should I be looking at postgraduate focussed books?

  • @ZeroToFinals

It is probably about medical school level. Zero to Finals is definitely sufficient (many people use it for the GP exams also).
