How To (Cost Effectively) Get WiFi In Your Motorhome/Van

What is the best and most cost-effective way to get WiFi in your van?
We shot a quick video outlining the options we researched and what we settled on in the end.
The router and mobile plan outlined in the video:
► WiFi mobile router: amzn.to/3Bphrk9
► SMARTY SIM card: i.smarty.co.uk/Aga6GTx

► Who are we?
We’re Rob and James, partners in crime and life for over 10 years. Together with our dog, Oscar, we love travelling, exploring and being outdoors.
For the past few years, we have spent a month in the winter in warmer climes but the pandemic put paid to that (for now) so we decided to explore more of our beautiful home country, the UK.
At the start of 2021 we purchased our first motorhome and boy, was it a steep learning curve. There was much we wished we had known both before and after we bought, and so we decided to start this KZread channel (as well as our website www.ontheroadagain.uk) in the hope we can share what we have learned and also share our mistakes and what we learn as we go along. Unlike many, we are relative newbies and want to share our honest journey with you.
We publish 4 kinds of videos on this channel:
1. Our travel vlogs
2. Helpful campervan, RV, motorhome and caravan tips and tricks
3. Site reviews
4. Product reviews

Yes, we have done something very similar with a TP-Link product and a Smarty SIM. It works really well. Speeds vary depending on where we are but between 6 MBs and 27 MBs - ample for most things and a few people using devices. We also connect our TV through it and the SatNav head unit in the motorhome. Thanks you for the video. I hope people will try this first as it could save them a lot of money.

We have exactly the same setup as you except we're paying Smarty £18 a month for unlimited data. Some months we've topped 80Gb, but mostly around 20-30Gb

Great video. I have had this solution for over four years and now have a 5g ready version. I connect all my devices including Sky Q I take from home and the smart TV. Depending on the signal it is a great solution as you can move it around. I have just ordered a new van and the Avtec wifi is a factory fitted option, so I am really questioning if I need the Avtec or carry on as I am.. Its really worth trying first to save cost and drilling holes in the roof.

We use SMARTY (link in the notes) and they give you a SIM card. We pay £10/month and they gives us 30gb of data (they have different plans to suit all needs) You can stop anytime (it’s not a contract but pay as you go). Hope that helps.

You can also just use your mobile phone to set upp wifi for other devices( called tethering) works out well if u have plenty of data on your mobile plan.

@@OnTheRoadAgain-UK I thought the same and asked when I was looking to take a contract with three for a mobile wifi router. The difference I was told is that using your phone as a hot spot (tethering) means the phone has to share the bandwidth with data and any calls made or received from the phone at the same time, as you will know you can still use the phone when used as a hotspot. With a dedicated mobile mifi or router such as the Avtec, it uses the full bandwidth just for data and should in theory be better when using data.

Could I use this to just to connect a ring Wi-Fi security camera so I can check in while I'm out? I'd only need to check in a few seconds each hour and not sure what data that would use. The hope is to just buy a preloaded sim.

Yes you can. We have a Neos camera which plugs into a 10000mahr power bank when in use. The camera connects to the MiFi box and you can watch the video (and hear and talk) on your phone over the 4g network. I once raised a dispute with a garage who said they had taken my van for a test drive after servicing. I showed them video footage of the van not moving plus GPS tracking from my tracker. We also set the camera up for MoT tests as the tester has no reason to go into the hab area.

I think this is oversimplified TBH. We have a powerful Netgear router and it VERY much depends on location. If there is a reasonable signal then yes it's great but in many areas with forests and mountains there is nothing to be had. We have a 3 and an EE sim and have been to many places with zero signal. To suggest that simply having a router is going to be the complete solution is just not correct.

  • @OnTheRoadAgain-UK

    @OnTheRoadAgain-UK

I agree and I don’t imply to simply have a router will solve all issues. Obviously you have to be in a decent signal area
