I love how she explained the technique with the yarn, it really helps that instead of just getting straight into “TAKE THIS SECTION THEN ADD THIS SECTIONS AND PUT IT INTHER ANOTHER SECTION” she made sure to explain it simple beforehand. it’s just so much easier to learn to do something when you actually understand what you’re doing.

I wanted to come back here to THANK YOU! I have very thick, afro medium length hair (a mix of 3c-4b) that can be hard for me to style because of the sheer volume of it. A couple months ago, I watched the braiding technique you showed a few times and after a couple times practicing I had little progress. I wanted to achieve this so I could do a cute protective style on myself from anywhere instead of needing a stylist. Today I decided to try it again, felt super relaxed and didn't go in with any expectation. I somehow kept the muscle memory of the technique you taught and just went for it. I closed my eyes, felt my way through my hair with the technique and when I was done it looked sooo lovely. For some reason, closing my eyes and focusing on how it feels and envisioning the hair pattern helps me. I can't wait to practice more to refine it. THANK YOU!

Thank god for you Whitney! Until now, I seriously could NOT comprehend how to do cornrows. It didn't matter how many videos I watched/rewatched, it just wasn't clicking with me for some reason. But the yarn demonstration that you decided to use helped SO much! I think it's because it made it way easier to actually see the pieces you were working with, and the colors also made it much easier to follow the pattern. When people demonstrate on their own hair, everything tends to blend in with each other so it makes it so much more difficult to understand. Thank you so much for this video... I've been wanting to do this as a protective style for years, and now I finally can 😊

Now wait a minute Whitney O_O For the first time in my life I felt like I understood the explainations to cornrow so I decided to give it a try (for the hundredth time of course), my hair needs to be washed anyway so it's okay if I mess my curls... LORD ! The first try was hesitant and I ended up with a loose cornrow: but I actually ended up with a cornrow !!!! Second try, mistakes again but it's tighter and snap ! My fingers got the trick. Third time was a charm and I actually goddess braided my hair ! You have just opened a world of crochet braids, of protective styles under wigs, of better looking cornrows to replace my used up flat twists !! So when I say THANK YOU, just know that I mean it Whitney

The first few minutes with the yarn taught me after YEARS of not being able to. I just needed to know how to remember what piece to add the hair to. You're adding to the opposite side, and putting it under the middle. Repeat. It's so easy. Because when I'm trying to do a braid with my hands backwards, that order was BEYOND me!

This is not a French or Dutch braid. It is a CORNROW. Yes, they look similar, but the difference is with the braiding technique. When most of us think of cornrows, we think of the whole head being braided. Whitney did do cornrows, she just did two big ones. And to all the non black ppl asking if u can wear cornrows: Nothing's stopping u from wearing cornrows, however make sure u educate yourself about what black American's face, regarding hair for this situation. And when/if u get backlash from black ppl, have an educated response like "I know why some of u are offended by this, and i understand. For me, i like the style. I'm not ignorant to what black ppl faced regarding their hair for generations" Some black ppl will appreciate that response over "Omg it's 2016, get over it! U don't own a hairstyle". U will be showing respect. Many other races take parts of our culture that they like, without showing any type of respect to black ppl, particularly black Americans. They take apart our culture, they don't partake of our culture with us. Empathy, and respect, can go along way.
