This is one of the best tutorials I have ever seen on cooking dried beans. The first time I cooked dried red kidney beans they wouldn't soften until I added baking soda to the water. I also learned the hard way never salt your beans until the final stages of cooking because the salt makes them tough. Thankfully, I find that my black beans are softening nicely. Thanks for your tips.

Nelson Robert Willis soaking overnight for 8-12 hours doesn't always soften the outer membrane as much as the quick soak method (boil at high heat for 3 minutes, soak for 1 hour, rinse and boil again).

Check for stones before rinsing, it's easier. Lets you get rid of the "halves" and funky beans. Spread them out on the counter top and inspect and sweep them into the strainer as you go.

@@VallanaTrue Im a year too late. Anyways, you CAN season the water (I always do) but you can also just add a sauce after cooking. Best choice is to season the water. I like to use the South African Smoke from Trader Joe's.

I just use two inches of water as a guide. Boil and simmer on medium high heat for 10 minutes then on low for 3 hours. Season after cooking so the sodium doesnt absorb all the water. Comes out great!

Y'know, I just decided to fill a pot with water, put in some beans out of my bean bag, turn up the heat, and wait a couple hours. Yum.
I need to learn how to cook beans on my own. So i can make my own food and gain weight while going to the gym. Next video - How to cook chicken breast . Man i can't wait to cook. It's like learning a new skill I'll always use.

Not to mention you can buy them in bulk so you won't contribute to packaging waste as long as you use your own container! Also no dietician would consider beans a serving of veggies haha but i'm glad you promoted plant foods! (I'm vegan)

How do you make the juice that is in canned beans? The bean soup we make requires the juice in the cans also
