How To Convert Your MTB Wheels To Tubeless | Mountain Bike Tubeless Setup
Спорт
Converting your mountain bike wheels to tubeless is one of the best upgrades you can do. Lower weight, less rolling resistance, the option of running lower tyre pressures, and reduced chance of punctures that will interrupt your ride. Doddy shows you how 🔧

Pro Tip - always inflate your tires dry (no sealant) to the maximum pressure after installing new tape. The pressure in the tire will bed and form the tape to the rim. Otherwise, if you fill the tire with sealant straight away, you run a greater risk of the sealant getting under the tape and compromising the bond.
@nilz6432
4 жыл бұрын
This is a top tip, i have been doing the exact same thing and it works beautifully! I really don't understand why i dont see this tipp more often. You can put the tape in almost as messy as you want, after pressing it down with 4 bars or 50 to 60 psi, which is way more pressure than you can apply with your fingers, it will sit 100% without air bubbles underneath. When sealant gets under the tape, it will leak, sealant will get in the rim and make a mess. (I had a bontrager rim which ended up airtight because the stans fluid sealed the holes for the spoke nipples, only realized it when i tryed to adjust the spoke tension.)
@pab2611
4 жыл бұрын
I was just about to write the same tip. One thing tho, you should inflate it with an inner tube inside, otherwise the pressure wont do as much in the sense of bedding the tape
@KN-ko8ez
4 жыл бұрын
Is there any specific length of time which you should leave it inflated to seat the tape to the rim? Like, would it be best advised to leave it overnight before deflating it and adding sealant and re-inflating?

Here's a tip : smear some sealant around the valve bung just before you seat it into the rim. Gives it a little extra seal.

Top tip #1: remove the valve core when seating the tire. This way air can rush into the tire quicker (no core on the way) and you increase your chances to seat the tire on the first go. Top tip #2: if have no pump with booster or a separate canister, you can cheat and may (and may not) work. Attach the punp hose to the valve, but then fold the hose with one hand so that no air goes thourgh the hose. Then pump until you see some 9-10 bars on the gauge (if you have a high pressure floor pump). Then realease the hose and keep pumping. I have popped several tires this way.

This such a good how to video. You could possibly make more of why you wash the wheel in soapy water. My second effort, having done as you suggested with the water, worked perfectly. Thankyou.
Have only tried Stan’s rim tape and Gorilla Tape before… happy to report that the Gorilla Tape was easier to set up tires (tubeless-ready and not rated for tubeless) tubelessly. Oh, and only use Stan’s if you want a buildup of giant boogers inside your tires; Muc-Off and Orange Seal seem to not have this problem.
Thanks, best video on tubeless.
My Canyon Neuron came with Mavic XA tubeless ready rims, put the tube out, sealant in and never had to bother with punctures since then. I only struggled once, when I tried to clean the tyre before refilling the sealant. Next time I will just put some more in.
I just added some inserts and used the tyre pump from the boot of my car and they seated like a dream. It’s basically a mini compressor and most modern cars have one
Well done, thanks!
Valid information... good job👌
I'm very tempted now.

Gorilla tape leaves behind a lot of residue that is a pain to remove. My LBS guy said he's damaged carbon rims when removing Gorilla tape because it can be so strong. I still use it for some cheap alloy MTB rims, but for road I think I'll stick to proper tubeless rim tape.

I used Stan's tape in my first try, it leaked all the time. Then, I got myself a gorilla tape and no problems so far... Thanks for updating these videos, I recently got a flat on my new bike and was under the impression from the LBS that it was tubeless ready but not running a tubeless setup. Much to my surprise I went to take the tyre off and ended up with sealant running out everywhere. Needless to say I took it to different LBS and they sorted it all out for me and explained that sealant had probably gone off in the tyre and needs to be topped up every so often. But this video will certainly help when I look to replace the tyres that came on my Specialized Epic Evo.
seldom have i seen something explained so well
I thought it was time to go tubeless with my Spectral ON e-bike, so bought the removal tool, new valves from Stans plus Stans sealant. My valves didn't come with different types of rubbers so I had to hope for the best. Wanted to try the dry method first but didn't have a plastic tube to fill the tyre with. Easy solution was to use a syringe. It only had a 10ml capacity bit worked nonetheless. I only have a track pump so when I pumped the tyre (before putting in sealant) nothing happend. Did some fiddling with the tyre, pumped like made and, hey presto, the tyre sealed first time with no apparent leaks. Followed on with Doddy's instructions and, unbelievably for me, everything went according to plan. Will leave for a few hours and check again. Fingers crossed.
Love it. Question, my valve core Remover isn't doing the job. Is there an alternative to putting sealant in. Could I just pry the tires open and what precaution should I take in case?
Thanks guys. Just used this video as a step by step guide to convert mine to tubeless and to fit my flash new Minions. I am one of the unfortunate ones to get a leak from the join in the rim which I slowed down with another layer of tape and the sealant seems to be plugging up the rest. Other than that, it went off without a hitch. Thanks for the instructions. I should mention, I used the same Muc-off kit that was used in the vid. Cheers and Merry Christmas.

Thanks for all the great information you continue to provide!
I know, I know- I’m late to the party. Finally getting to the edge of the cliff to jump into tubeless tire set up. This was an EXCELLENT, thorough introduction into what I’m getting involved with. Thankfully, it RS not nearly as intimidating as I’d initially thought. Thanks for getting me to make the leap!
I'm still deciding whether I want to do this or not, but great explanation. One question that came to my mind: Weight saving can't be really a thing right, if you put 200ml of sealant in there? That must account for at least 200 grams?
4:41 mr cat saying hello x
Really hope u can do a video on a 29 x 2.3 mountian bike tire
With the sealant going through the valve does it gum up the valve? Does it require a new valve and stem each time you redo or change tires? Thanks for the great info

They're Shimano RT-26 and they're trash.
I see that Specialized Bicycles now has a series of self-sealing inner tubes that have a perfectly applied layer of sealant during manufacturing. This sealant is said to stay in a semi-liquid form for many years (does not dry out) and is ready to instantly seal against thorns, nails, etc. Yet being permanently inside of the tube, there is zero mess to the rim, tire or the user. This new series also features a novel weight saving design - the tube circumference is not of a constant thickness of rubber. We know that thick inner tubes add weight but also are very durable against punctures, these new tubes have thick rubber on the outermost part of the tube that is adjacent to the tread and sidewall but thinner, weight saving rubber on the portion of the tube that touches only the rim. Self-sealing just like tubeless tires, but no special tubeless valves or canister air pumps are required, no expensive (and heavy) bottles of sealant, no messy clean ups ever and a perfectly applied layer if sealant. However, the novice mechanic can still pinch the tube during a ham fisted installation - alas, nothing is perfect. I would love to see GMBN compare modern self-sealing tubes to tubeless setups - from puncture resistance to weight differences, trail maintenance headaches and overall costs.
A kayak strap works great too just wrap it around the tire and cinch it tight. Then just use your hand pump to pump it up till the bead pops. Then just pull the strap off and pump it up to your desired pressure. This works on any type of tubless tire even wheel barrow tires.
Great video. I'm converting a non-tubeless fat bike wheel and... of course the tire simply don't inflate in the first shot! :-) I will try adding more tape, this looks a good idea.

Had one recently where the rear tire started leaking from the valve after a few months, tightened up and fixed. Front tire air escaping from the spokes. Guess ill have to retape but gonna try some more sealant first. Both happened after sitting for about a month in garage because of work and weather. T
