Very nice! :) I would add that installing a paneled drop-ceiling is a great home theater asset for running wires, adding future height channels, lowering the noise floor, and controlling reflections off the ceiling. You can even leave the walls open above the drop ceiling for easy access to lower wires into the walls, just make sure to take the outer wall layer all the way to the top, sealing out external sounds from spilling in over the wall.

In my dedicated theatre in my garage I had a problem with fan noise from the projector and it also raising the room temperature in the summer. The solution was to put it in a sealed MDF box lined acoustic foam with a sealable door at the front for access with a glass window for the image. I mounted this to the ceiling, I cut one hole in the top of the box and run a small piece of gutting pipe into the loft above, to this I mounted a 120mm pc fan to pull the hot air out, as the Box is sealed I ran a 50mm flexible pipe into the bottom corner of the box from the ceiling and ran this to the

Thanks for the video! I am on the forum and that is a great resource for information. I have been working the last 3 months on a dedicated vs man cave concept. Due to non-stop constraints and trying to nail down a better suited area in the house for HT it finally came to me and now turning the basement main area into a dedicated room. I will add two door ways in the hall that enters and exits the room. This will give me 26 x 17.8 x 9 foot ceilings. Still have a lot to figure out as I have a very large beam running across the width and dips down about a foot. Right now I am trying to make a 150" screen with 2 rows. Would love to see a video on designing concepts like line sight and riser height vs screen size. I have enough wall space for a 150" screen and would put the L/C/R behind acoustically transparent material. Right now my riser is 9" and it won't work for the screen from what I can figure out I will need to increase to 16".

I worked in the BBC Sound Studios and I think bass and sub-bass is more felt than heard, so in the set up that I am doing now I shall be fixing the SB Units directly to the seats, under or on the back. Also, to a just their level, play some wide frequency music or pink noise and turn them up from zero til the start to overlap your main units set on flat bass.

Ok, alright, well I’m going at the sound portion of my home theater project a little differently than usual . I have selected all of my electronics and speakers and I’m building my home theater room in my basement which is an 8 foot tall by 13 foot wide by 19 foot long isolated rectangle. I’m using the Apple TV 4K 64 gig with Dolby Atmos capability Sony PlayStation lll as two of the sources and all Klipsch speakers, 2 Rotel amps, (one 5 channel and the other 8 channel) , Rotel processor , Rotel battery backup power conditioner, and Pioneer Elite Kuro 60” plasma and Pioneer Elite blue ray disc player. And Butt kickers for the home theater seats . I’m setting the audio up as a 5.4.8 system which consists of the center channel , left front, right front, left rear and right rear speakers which are the 5. Then I have two 15 inch down firing subwoofers for the left front and right front corners, as well as two 12 inch down firing subwoofers respectively for the left rear and right rear corners of the home theater which are the point 4. And finally I have 8 additional surround speakers covering the rest of the build by placing 4 of them equally spaced overhead for the (Dolby Atmosphere effect , better known as Dolby Atmos) and the remaining 4 surround sound speakers placed diagonally in each corner of the home theater midway the distance from floor to ceiling or roughly 48 inches off the floor which would be a tad bit above a normally seated listening height or position. Of course I will sound proof / isolate the home theater as necessary with insulation, bass traps, center of room furniture placement techniques, etc as needed for the best possible results. I will keep you posted on the build progress with more equipment information and photos as I progress if you’d like.

My biggest challenge is the 10-foot height vaulted ceiling in my theater room. Wall height = 7.5 feet. Wanting to put in 2/4 overhead (in-wall/in-ceiling) speakers, but unsure how to control. Would really enjoy a dtsx/atmos setup. That's the last bit I really need to solve. Great video - very practical recommendations/ideas.

Great video! In this video I learned lot more than reading bunch of articles on a search. At 9:40, 5-inch padding is used on the door. Where can I purchase that? My HT is in the garage. The door to the house leaks lot of audio into the living room and rest of the house. I was going to use thick curtain but foam may make more sense. I am not sure what to do with the wall with the screen. The other end is kitchen and family room. Foam would look ugly (when light not turned off). I am leaning towards heave curtain to cover the garage door. More for look and block the light than sound absorption.

Before investing in a big, pretty popcorn machine, remember how much time it takes to clean that thing, it's glass, so you can see any drop of butter, oil or mess and when it's dirty just a little, it looks horrible, so most people use one for a couple of times and then never use it again because of the work involved and as far as the coaster for your speakers, that will encourage people to set drinks there, I find that if you shoot the first one that sets a beer on top of a speaker, word will spread fast and no one will ever think about carelessly treating speakers like a coffee table.

Hi, I would love for you to review my home cinema set up to show the mistakes I have made so that no one else makes them. I set myself a budget of £5,000 which is small but that was my budget. I wanted my cinema in the biggest room. This room really breaks your rule 1, as it is totally glass including ceiling. The room also doubles up as a gym. There are a lot of reflective surfaces for noise and light. Overall the room works for me but I have a much cheaper sound system in the lounge and the sound is so much better in there with less speakers. Think it would make a good video of what not to do. Great channel, found your video very useful. I learnt a lot from it, liked and subscribed. Keep up this really good work!

I have run all the cables already as you have advised in your videos, subs in all corners and cables for Dolby atoms. I would like to put up a projector and have run cables to run this but am I just going stupid with tech when the room may not suit? So far I have purchased Yamaha cxa5100 and mx500 and a set of Kef Ci200RR thx ceiling speakers. The room is 3.5m wide along back wall (seating) 3m projection/tv wall and 4.4m long.

The speakers is a new brand from Norway, called arendal sound. Also what would you recommend i do with the bass crossover. Set them to large or manually 80hz? 8Inch Woofers on those massive Towers, but i only have a reciever without external amp.

I am debating on using a spare bedroom into a theater but am worried it would be to small to run a 7.2.2 setup. I would really like to run 2-4 in ceiling speakers for the atmos/auro effects. My theater is currently in my livingroom which is far from ideal due to open layout, vaulted ceiling and lighting. Would really like to move it into the spare room but would like recommendations. Not sure of dimensions but would guess 10*12 with 8 foot ceiling. System is all definitive technology studio monitor speakers with a cheap klipsch sub which I plan on replacing with 2 better quality probably svs pb3000.

Hi Gene, thank you again for another great and informative video! I do have a question regarding my theater and my sub locations. My theater is 20' long by 9' wide. I had no other option than to place my two Power Sound Audio XV30-Fse's at the back left corner right next to each other. On the opposing side of my theater there is a door (entrance to the theater) there, so I can't put one of my subs there. I could send pics, but I know you're probably way too busy to look at my theater. So, I guess my question is, what would you do if you were in my shoes? I've already calibrated them via Audyssey XT-32 with my Denon AVR-4520ci, and that did do wonders for my LFE. But, the back row of seats (two theater recliners) can get blown away especially during reference bass scenes during movies. I hope my question makes sense.... Thank you! Kevin

Request help on the following: 1) Couch cannot be too far from the wall as cuts into the viewing distance. Not sure how I can get the surround behind me for a 7.1 system. 2) Only three walls. The fourth side is open to go down the stairs. 3) Considering Emotiva or Monoprice amps. Will get two seven channel amps. One will handle the 5 or 7 channels. The other will handle atmos channels (four) and maybe biamp or have height speakers. Any recommendation on the amps. Thanks. Nazar

I calibrate my speakers to 75db but my Klipsch R-12SW is dangerously too loud at that number. So, i use my ears for the sub. Is there a specific db for the sub? And how you calibrate two subs???

What about placement of center channel speakers and what can you do if you have a Tempered glass TV stand that also houses your components. And will mounting your TV make any difference and after you have mounted your TV what kind of stands or housings are best for you components and center channel speaker?

Peter ptr51ntn I'm in the same boat as you with a tempered glass stand w/ shelving and my tv is on the top shelf. I used my center channel just below the tv, on the middle shelf but angled upward with some aurolex foam wedges so that its aimed at ear level. As for mounting the tv on the wall, I cannot say, I'll leave that to Gene to tell you whether accoustics are changed.

I'm using my Xbox One X as a 4K Blu-ray player, I've tried plugging this directly into my Yamaha Receiver, its supposed to support 4K pass-through, but I've had endless issues with that. I've also got my PS4 plugged into the receiver. ARC plugged into TV. My question is, what's the ideal way to set this all up? I've watched endless videos, and can't seem to find one that addresses all this. I've plugged the Xbox directly into an Onkyo receiver, with a 4k HDMI cable, and that worked.

I think an in depth guide on how, what and why about room treatments is needed. I've seen far too many people kill their room by making it nearly into an anechoic chamber... Or worse yet, people who would spend thousands of dollars on speaker cables, power chords and digital cables yet spend like 2 bucks for egg crates to use as their so called room treatment.

"Performance" from your race, and car(analogy) .! (Sorry...Typo) .Also, Let's not forget critical crossover point considerations, and good frequency response and phase coupling at critical crossover point between subs and speakers! More deal breakers for maximum performance and accurate sound if neglected. Its all fun though...

@@jaxw2628 Yes but no way he could get a decent quality 84 inch LED LCD if its even possible for $900 and if he was to get a projector and screen, its not going to be very high quality. I think you would be better to stick to a smaller LED LCD such as a 65 inch tv for your budget. Larger isn't necessarily better if the image quality is much worse because of the added size and associated cost.

HVAC is a serious problem in my room. The return is in the dinning behind where my system is. It drives me insane when it comes on and as far as I can tell there is nothing I can do about it. If I could just drop the db by 10 would be awesome. When that thing comes on it just kills the entire experience, takes away from the dynamic by a factor of 10. It drives me up a wall! Its the only place my system can go. Now with summer coming it will be running often.

Great video but my dilemma is I have a small bonus room above my garage and I have my sofa to the wall because it’s a small space. Do you recommend anything for that? My sofa to the tv wall is about 8 to 9 feet so not a lot of wiggle room. Thanks.

EQ the problematic bass frequencies caused by standing waves, try to move the surround speakers a bit away from the back wall if they're very close to your couch.

Audioholics because of the space restriction the surround speakers are on the side of the sofa about a foot away. I have just a 5.1 setup because of this. I will eventually up it to a 5.2.2 with Atmos at front elevation. Currently just got got Denon 4400h at great price. I want to get def tech bp9040 or bp9060 with can 9040 or 9060. Do you think these are too much for a small space? Thanks for the reply.

I am wondering the same thing? My room is the same dimensions with this screen along the 10 inch wall with 8 foot ceiling height. I'm currently running a 5.1.2 speaker setup in that room and at the moment am trying to tame the acoustics with treatment, with a room this size I know it's going to require a lot just to sound half decent.

On step six, you said you want bass coming out of the sub, not your other speakers. What about for voices coming out of the center channel, if you’re center channel can handle it do you want the basses in peoples voices to come out of the center channel?

  • @Audioholics

    @Audioholics

No, ALL of your speakers should be crossed over at 80Hz. The lower midrange vocals will still come out of your center channel but having a dedicated channel to handle everything 80Hz and below is usually the best way to set up a home theater.
