How to Control the Conversation in English & Avoid Uncomfortable Questions

Knowing how to control the conversation in English will help you avoid uncomfortable topics and questions. This Confident English lesson will give you 3 ways to do that.
For example, if someone asks:
- So who are you going to vote for?
- Why don’t you have kids yet?
- Why did you move here?
Or maybe you felt uncomfortable because the conversation turned to gossip. And you didn’t want to be part of it.
If you’ve ever felt stuck or unsure of what to do in an English conversation, you’re not alone.
Whether you're an advanced-English speaker or just starting your language journey, today you’ll learn 3 practical strategies to boost your conversation skills and know how to control the conversation in English.
This means you’ll know how to answer the question if you want to, how to change the topic with ease, how to be assertive if necessary, and how to simply end the conversation.

This lesson covers a relevant topic. Many people tend to ask questions about one's personal life and do not care whether one is comfortable with such discussion or not. Some such people need a training in etiquette, to understand why we refuse to answer them.

Thank you for this lesson. It is so valuable for me, an adult student. I wish I had subscribed to your channel earlier. A few years ago, in a conversation practice class, one male student in my group asked an invasive and embarrassing question to female students: [how many sex partners do you have]. For anyone who gave a number bigger than one, he gave the next question: [ what do you think about having sex with anyone other than your future or current husband?]. Oh, my boy! At that time we were limited in English proficiency and preferred to be honest. So we got stuck. If now, it is so easy for me: 1, use curiosity to kick back the ball.: that's interesting, can I ask why you want to know? 2, change the topic, and redirect the conversation to a favorite topic: That's an interesting point. Speaking of which, have you prepared for the next English writing test? I was good at writing and I could absolutely beat him in my familiar field. 3, set clear boundaries: I don't feel comfortable talking about this in class. Can we talk about something else?

Oh my, those are certainly invasive questions. I'm glad you found some useful phrases you could use to redirect the conversation. Based on what you've described here, I think your 3rd option would be the best choice as the questions asked were rather inappropriate. Thank you for sharing your examples.

I like the idea of using humor to handle uncomfartable questions. Unfortunately, this method has a drawback: not everyone can take a hint. I've had several situations when some inappropriate questions followed my joke, and sometimes it perpetuated more unwanted curiosity.
