How To Connect Your LS Swap Alternator To Your Old Car “Gen” Dashboard Light

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When you LS swap an old car, you often end up with a dashboard that doesn’t work right anymore. In this video I connect the LS swap alternator to my factory 1964 Chevy Impala so that the dashboard “Gen” light turns on when the alternator stops working. It also stays off when the alternator is working.
In this video I used LS alternator pigtail part number 210-0167 which is for a 1997-2011 corvette LS1 a LS6.

    The light on the dash comes on when grounded, not powered. When the alt is running the 3rd wire in from the left becomes ungrounded causing the light go out, stop the alt (with key on ) and the light will come on.

    I'm no mechanic, so please excuse my lack of knowledge. I have a restored 1964 impala with a stock 283 engine and stock alternator. Twice I was unable to get the car started, one time it was the points, the next time it was the condenser, so a friend removed the points and condenser and installed a PerTronix lode sensor electronic ignition system. Now the gen light stays on all the time. My friend says the alternator is working properly and the battery is being charged properly. Do you have any thoughts on why the gen light stays on? The car has been in winter storage since late November so it has not been started/driven since then.

    Check out the wiring that goes to your Gen light and see where it is connected. Maybe it is simply unplugged?

    Hi On your swap did you have to do anything special with the Horn relay. As you know power comes from battery to horn relay and from relate to Alternator. Did you beef up the wire from battery, Did you run a wire straight from battery to Alternator. Thanks

  • @WiringRescue

    @WiringRescue

    4 жыл бұрын

    I didn’t touch the relay at all. I used the original power wire coming from that regulator and hooked it up to the LS alternator. I believe that actually means I’m running and external and internal regulator at the moment, but it seems to work well. At some point I do hope to clean up that entire area of wiring and remove the external regulator and all of its additional wiring. I just haven’t done it yet.

    @@WiringRescue I think it has to do with longevity. Also I have a 68 tempest ls project. I have trying to figure out the best way to bypass the external regulator. My problem is theere are two patterns for the four VR plug(splices). one is F4,23 the other is F3,24 patterns. Can you please tell me what wires you joined together and also what terminals on the LS alternator you joined? I'd be particularly interested what was done on the Pontiac. Thanks!
