How to Connect up a Contactor Control so 2 way Switching can Control a Large Load

Matt draws out how a contactor can be controlled by 2 way switch and be used to turn on many heavy current drawing loads. We see how many lighting points say in a factory can be turned on by a simple light switch via a contactor.
NOTE: This is a wiring diagram and the cable runs in reality will be completely different. The rated value of the contactor will vary depending on the load current being supplied.

    Thanks for another great explanation. Important to note what he says at 8:26 that sharing the neutrals is only for simplifying the diagram, you'd actually run separate neutrals for each circuit. If you actually only ran one back to the board (with separate circuits / breakers as shown) you would have shared or borrowed neutrals which is potentially dangerous.

  • @leestorey18

    @leestorey18

    The contactor I have at college has terminals for a neutral as well do this mean in this case you'd have 5 neutrals coming back to the board i.e coil, connector and 3 banks of lighting?

  • @jollyfinequality9865

    @jollyfinequality9865

    3 ай бұрын

    You only have four neutrals. One for each lighting circuit which is the same as each row of lights. Plus one for the control circuit, going to A2 on the coil within the contactor. Hope that helps.

    Great vid. Maybe worth mentioning that the contactor has a 240v coil in this instance. Don't want to go sticking 230v into a 24v coil. And the numbering on the contactor is indeed 1L1 3L2 5L3 2T1 4T2 6T3. Normally open or normally closed. And the additional use of the auxiliary contacts 13-14, 21-22 could be used as an indication lamp that the circuit is energised. Can't wait for the practical Vid.

    Not just for lighting either. I recently set up a situation where the lighting circuit (on a timed switch) ran the lights plus the coil side of the contactor and the socket circuit ran on a radial through the contactor. This meant that when the lights timed out and went off, so did the sockets, thereby guaranteeing nothing could be left on unattended in the area.

    tomorichard Thompson that’s the perfect solution for the above scenario 👍 unfortunately not the case for the last two I have had to rectify as a bms had been added to an existing installation. The company/contractor split the existing lighting distribution board so they could reduce lighting outside of trading hours. 70% board was operational during trading hours 30% board 24/7. Unfortunately 70% board had emergency lighting feeds and there solution to install 100a 4pole contactor below distribution board resulted in emergency luminaries discharging every night. Live and learn😂👍🎅

    I wired up a contactor to switch two supplies (a.c. mains and a.c. mains generated by solar PV) to one load - my hot water cylinder. So when the sun is shining one set of contacts supplies electric from the sun to the cylinder. When it's dark, a mains spur activates the coil and switches the a.c. mains on to the h/w cylinder, so the one circuit 'makes' and the other 'breaks'. It works fine and is another example of switching high current (well, 12 amps, high for domestic I suppose). I will blow myself up one day, but I just cannot get an electrician for love nor money where I live. :) :)

    Great explanation. Regarding sizing of the contactor itself,.do you size it to the full load capacity? In this example a 60A three pole contactor? Thank you guys, much love from Australia

    Brilliant video guys, can i ask 2 questions please, first what should be the rating of the contactor based on the load of all the lights? Second why did you use individual mcbs instead of a three phase mcb? Thanks

    would you recommend wiring the lights in a 2.5 now because of load on each circuit?

    So when you bring the 3 phase conductors from the panel to the contractor, I understand where the hots go, but where abouts do you tie in the neutrals? Do all the neutrals get soldered together or do they land somewhere on the contractor?
