    Thanks for these tips. I'm about to purchase JBLs and I had some questions. 1. I was curious on what interface I should get from Focusrite if I maybe wanted to add a bass later on? Can the 2i2 support that or should I look into the 4i4? 2. Would you recommend jack to jack or XLR to jack to the interface or doesn't matter for sound quality? 3. How would I connect this to the aux in the back of my iMac from the interface? Thanks!

  • @TheApolloZ

    @TheApolloZ

    1. You can use XLR cables to connect the JBL LS310S subwoofer to the JBL monitors (305/306/308), and then connect with the audio interface using TRS cables. 2. Jack to jack is recommended but XLR to TRS will be balanced. 3. To connect to the aux you will need a TRS/TS to auxiliary cable.

    One is balanced (TRS) one is unbalanced (RCA). Using the TRS input will cancel any noise picked up along the cable path. Beyond 20’ or so, I’d recommend using TRS, but below 15’ it probably doesn’t matter. Check out this video for more info: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pJuavMRqoKivorg.html

    I’m looking to do a similar set up to this in the future but I have a dumb question first. If I was to connect studio monitors to an interface and connect that to my PC, do the PC speakers work at the same time as the monitors? For instance if I wanted to play music through the speakers via Spotify or something but play along using an amp sim through my monitors at the same time, will that work? Or can I only have the speakers OR monitors outputting sound at any one time. Thanks

    How are the 8 inch monitors working for you? Been looking at their 305p & 308p versions but still unsure about which size to pick. I know 8s will give better bass response but they might be overkill for a solo musician.

  • @AudioUniversity

    @AudioUniversity

    I like mine, but the 5-inch monitors also sound great. If you’re working in a small room, the extended bass response becomes less advantageous. If the 5s fit in your budget and the 8s don’t, go with the 5s! You’ll love them!

The connectors on the back are red and black, not the old clips - rather two round looking connectors, not sure of size. If these were connected with the right connector with both to the laptop headphone jack, is it possible for me to get a stereo sound and do I need to power these monitors. Opinion appreciated. Kyle, I have a situation that I could use some advice on and everyone I contact cannot give me good answers Are you up for the challenge? Two pairs of studio monitors obviously a powered and an active with each pair with a car audio system and their own amplifiers each four-channel 100 watt per channel ideally for 4 ohm or two ohm but 4 ohm only gets me the 50 watts to power and combine it with a pair of 6x9s a pair of 4-in coaxial speakers as well in order to attach to a TV to audio interfaces the 1824C and a 24C and hopefully ultimately controlled by my head unit in my van the boss 550B. The amps that I have are the r1004 from boss and then one final little monkey wrench to throw in there is I have a sound ordinance subwoofer amplifier combo and I'm trying to get it all integrated using AC and DC power with a power inverter and not blow all of My equipment up whenever I decide I want to play some music or do what I'm intending to do with this busting van which is attached from my condenser microphone somewhere in there to be able to practice and perform. And let's just say I've tried every adapter It's just that there's a thousand configurations that Presonus, Mackie and Boss cannot for the life of them to help me nor can crutchfield or Sweetwater and I'm on a budget. You're up for the challenge and help me solve this I will literally pay you for it but I kind of find the stuff fun to try to figure out and I thought you might too. I am disabled so I'm practically broke but I would pay you if you can help me through this out unless you just want to do it for fun which I would really appreciate. That's all not a joke either That's actually what I'm trying to do is create a busting van so that way I can go in at the very least earn a few quarters here and there to supplement my disability income which is absolutely garbage as I been disabled since 23 years old. Hope to hear from you and thanks for all the videos you've made that have help me learn quite a bit.

    The maximum output of the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (at 0 dBFS) is 15.5 dBu. Check out the Focusrite Scarlett Specs here: focusrite.com/en/usb-audio-interface/scarlett/scarlett-2i2 I have mine set to +4 dBu. You've also got the volume knobs on the JBL monitors to counteract that decrease in level. I set my interface monitor knob to about half or 3/4 and then calibrate the speaker's level knob to a comfortable sound pressure level.

    Many subs have pass thru connections for sending signal to the subwoofer and monitors with the same stereo output. If your sub has a pass thru, this interface will work for you. However, if you need the ability to send a dedicated signal to the subwoofer, you’ll need an interface with additional outputs.

    Is this JBL studio monitor series as forgiving in case of positioning as I can read quite often because of their very effective and wider sweet spot so that a very accurate and constant triangle isn`t as important as with other monitors? I`m interested in this JBL monitor series (JBL 305P MkII ?) for my desktop PC only for gaming and enjoyable music listening, no music production.

    I don’t have a strong opinion on one over the other. I like that active speakers make the process simpler in that you don’t need to experiment with different amplifiers. If you want that flexibility, you would probably enjoy having passive speakers instead.

    @@AudioUniversity I mean, I'll get more flexibility, but at the same time I don't want to get into a rabbit hole. @@Angelo-vb6dg If I got it right It should be noted that the magnetic field surrounding any dynamic speaker system will interfere with the television or monitor image. In these cases, magnetic shielding is essential and this aspect might be more important than active vs. passive monitors. But especially with active speaker systems, this magnetic shielding should be better than with passive systems, simply because active systems are preferably used together with any monitors, but I`m not an expert so I could be totally wrong.

    I always found confusing the input gain knob: depending on the monitors, they goes from +6 to -6 dB, from 0 to -15 dB (Neumann)… To my actual setup the minimum is enough to any track I listen for, but the sound is not very good. Conversely if I go up to the maximum gain output the sensibility is too high for fine volume regulation, and again the sound is not good but in a different way. Finally the sound is fine on the middle of the gain, which in the case of my Genelec 8030c is 0 dB I asked about the influence of gain and frequency response on Audisciencereview, but despite the fact that is so evident that gain affects sound color whereas volume don’t, no one gave a comprehensible response for which is the best gain adjustment, so I did it by ear 👂 If anyone has some information please share, I’m happy with my 0 dB adjustment (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and Genelec 8030cpm) but still have this problem on my brain 🤓

    I need to know for sure, do both monitors each have a TRS cable jack or does a single one only have a jack while the other is blank like other monitors?

    Phantom power only applies to the inputs, not the outputs. So the studio monitors will not be affected.

    If you want a discrete channel for the subwoofer, you will need an interface with at least 3 outputs. If your subwoofer has a pass-thru, you only need 2 outputs.

    The Focusrite will allow you to output audio from a computer. If you want to output audio from your TV, I’d recommend using a DI box and maybe even a mixer. The TV will have an unbalanced output which will be susceptible to picking up noise if the cable is longer than 20’ or so. A DI box converts the unbalanced signal into a balanced signal. Learn more about that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pJuavMRqoKivorg.html Here’s a DI box that might work well for the TV: amzn.to/3Gv3hR0 The mixer would give you control over the level so that your speakers can be muted when connecting and disconnecting the TV, but a mixer is not required.

    It depends on what it’s describing. For a microphone, it means the output voltage at a given pressure level. For a powered speaker, it is often a toggle between +4dBu and -10dBV. For more info on this, check out this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqNn0Nh-o5eyfLw.html
