How to Configure a Sony A5100 as a Webcam
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I dusted off my 9-year-old Sony Alpha 5100 and set it up as a webcam.
I ran into a few minor issues and decided to make a video to help you avoid those problems.
I am glad to be able to find a purpose for this great little camera instead of it sitting in a drawer.

I'm curious, I'm looking for a budget friendly compact CMOS sensor camera to use for streaming and recording overhead/birdseye perspectives, I have a number of older model Canon and Nikon models which don't fit the bill for one reason or another, came pretty close with a Canon EOS M10 but the primary issue was it shuts off live feed after 3 minutes and there isn't anyway to get around this limitation. do you know if the A5100 has a similar restriction or will it live feed without recording indefinitely? (I am also googling this question but figured a faster route to the answer might be to just ask someone that has one hence this comment). Note when I say recording, this would be via OBS on the PC not recording on the camera itself, I just need the live feed via HDMI out to capture card to be continuously on and not have an auto shutoff/power saver mode that can't be turned off like the M10

I have used this 5100 set up for OBS sessions 30+ minutes, live discord streaming for hours, that test in the video went on for 20+ minutes. So no issues, I think that is why this little guy is so popular for this use.
Note: the a5100 does NOT output its full quality 1080 resolution (unless it is recording), even when set to do so. Its processor cannot handle doing so at "idle". As you can see from the video where he is in the red shirt, the quality is not any better than a $100 1080 USB3 webcam. Compare the output to a recorded video off the SD card and you'll see what I mean. Huge difference. This was why I got the 6100 for using with OSB and VMIX. It will output clean HDMI. However, the 16-55 lens is indeed amazing.
Hello Thanks for the Video :-) Just one question: Does the camera turn on when it gets power via the dummy battery (just like an webcam would do) or do you have to start it manually every time?

You have to turn it on every time (which I prefer, so I don't feel like the webcam is spying on me).
When you talk about the heating issue, I'm not recording to the SD card because I will be recording to the capture card? Am I understanding this correctly?

@@JoeyLombardi Thank you so much!
are you using a lens? or is it the kit?

I bought it used a long time ago, but I am pretty sure it is the original kit for the 5100. I tried the 16mm pancake and it didn't look so good

This one or Sony a6000. Overheating?

I had a lot of overheating issues when I first got it and I learned to work around that. The dummy battery seems to cause less heating which is good
