2021 Best sony a5100 settings for streaming!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

All you need to do to get a stabilized crisp image to your stream from your Sony A5100!
In this tutorial we're going to go through the camera settings that will provide you with the best possible camera quality on your stream using a Sony A5100.
Some settings might require some tweaking like ISO, aperture and shutter speed (though a nice rule of thumb is x2 your fps, so for 60fps you'll want to use a shutter speed of 1/125)
To be able to follow along with this tutorial you need this:
Sony A5100
HDMI to Micro HDMI cable
Dummy battery for A5100
Elgato Cam link (or equivalent)
Some settings might require some tweaking like ISO, aperture and shutter speed (though a nice rule of thumb is x2 your fps, so for 60fps you'll want to use a shutter speed of 1/125)

    Hi! Well, from my experience, if you don't have it, you most likely have the NTSC version of the software. So skip this step and instead check to see if you're able to select the "1080p60" option. If you can, then you are on NTSC, which is what you want ;)

  • @Lommaern

    @Lommaern

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey and thank you 🙏 Well, for streaming the a5000 can be a tad finicky. For starters you'll have to run a 3rd party app to get clean hdmi out, which is an extra point of potential failure I personally would like to avoid. Also, the a5100 delivers a higher resolution at 24mp vs 20mp, the a5100 also has better focus detection. So a better camera overall, but especially for streaming. If you're unsure of what camera you should go for, you should check out my video on different camera solutions. Spoiler alert, I reach and overstep the point of diminishing returns :P

    Great video man! Question. I've looked at many videos and done so much searching online and I can't seem to figure out why it's a bit laggy when I try to stream to OBS. My system I'm running is a Intel i9-7900X CPU @ 3.30GHz with 32 GB of RAM. My internet speed is also great (wired connection). I've changed all of the settings on the camera and I'm running less than 30 fps still, yet the actual gameplay is crisp and runs smoothly. Is there a solution that you'd recommend for this to help ensure a smooth framerate consistently from the camera? Thanks!

  • @Lommaern

    @Lommaern

    2 жыл бұрын

    If all your settings have been set to what#s in the video then this might come from shutter speed being set too low. If you're shooting 60fps, your shutter speed should be set to 1/125 (always double your fps to get the most natural looking motion blur)

    I have another question that maybe you can help with. I have the a5100, but when set up for streaming with AF on it can’t seem to stay locked on my face. It continually focuses on the mic, then back to my face, sometimes to a light behind me. I checked out your twitch streams and you and your mic both seem perfectly focused at all times. I am using the sigma 16mm 1.4 lens. Could that be the issue? It’s just tough to get it to primarily stay on me. I would use manual focus, but the range for actually being in focus, at least on that lens, is so small.

  • @Lommaern

    @Lommaern

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sorry for the late response, Shotgun. There are a few things you can try: If you're mostly in the center of your frame, set your focus mode to center, then set your AF Drive Speed to normal or slow (depending on what works best in your scene). Lastly make sure to set your AF Track Duration to Normal. If you're going to run it in manual (which I prefer) and you set your focus somewhere, but feel it's too shallow, you'll need to stop your lens down to somewhere your lens gives you enough depth (probably around F2.8 for the sigma) Lower F-stop = the lens tales in more light, gives you shallower focus and more background blur. The higher you go, the inverse happens. Hope this was of help, let me know in the discord if I can help more :)

    I'm using Streamyard to actually record all my podcasts (not necessarily live stream) . I have the basic pro plan at $25/per month so can only record at 720p. Do you think having a good Sony DSLR with that Sigma 16mm lens or something else really good is even worth the investment if you can only shoot 720p as opposed to using using an iPhone as an upgraded webcam? At 720p, is the quality of a DSLR better enough over an iPhone to justify spending the money?

  • @Lommaern

    @Lommaern

    Hi! Well, that all depends on what you're after. Using a phone through the Elgato Epoccam app is very much a viable option and can give you solid results. The real advantage you get when using a mirrorless cam (like the Sony a5100) with the Elgato CamLink is that you get a full 1080p60 (or 4k60 if your cam supports it and you use the CamLink 4k) clean video, and that you can control how you want your video to look by choosing different lenses. The kit lens that comes with an A5100 is 16-55mm so it gives you a lot of range, but it's not very fast at F3.5-5.6, so you won't get very much background blur (bokeh). Tl;dr: 1080p is absolutely worth it (even with a phone), a mirrorless cam might be, depending on your use case :)

    That's mighty kind of you 😆 I do have to apologize though, I mixed up my cameras. Checked on my a5100s and they don't allow you to turn off the monitor, probably due to there not being a viewfinder on cam. I'd recommend just flipping the monitor up or, if that's inconvenient, turn the monitor brightness to manual and reduce it to -2. You'll find this setting "setup", menu 1 and monitor brightness. This option is unavailable when a micro-hdmi is connected, so just pull it, set it and replug.

    Hi, Simby! Yes, to get 60fps, the camera requires you to run it in NTSC-mode. You'll lose none of your other settings when doing this. One strange thing about this setting is that when using it, the monitor shows a message on a black background saying "Running on NTSC" every time you restart. To remove this simply press the confirm key, and you'll be able to use your monitor again.

    Well, this solution doesn't work on all Sony cams (I use A5100 and A7-series cameras, which all work) and as far as I know it doesn't work on the W800 or W850. I think you'd need to use Sony's webcam tool to use these (support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/webcam/en/download/), though the last time I tried the resolution was abysmal and the frame rate locked to 30.

  • @Lommaern

    @Lommaern

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi! If I'm understanding you correctly, you're talking about the overlay at the bottom of the display and that doesn't get sent through the hdmi output, so you don't have to worry about it, it's only for the camera display. When it comes to overheating, not really, but I've had it happen when it's a super hot day. The solution to this is to flip up the monitor so the heat can dissipate out the back :)

    You can use Sony's proprietary software to get clean HDMI output, though this will limit your resolution to 1024×576. I'd recommend you rather go with an elgato camlink (don't need the 4k version as the a5100 maxes out at 1080) or equivalent, to have the camera be seen as a webcam.

    Hi, Brett! Tbh, upgrading from the kit lens is, imo, a good idea either way. Yes, it's money that could serve you well in other areas, but it does lift the quality of your output substantially. Also, I've got a video coming out soon where I go over 6 of my lenses (all primes) and how they change the look of the A5100 ;)

    @@Lommaern yes the sigma is a great lens and is actually what I use on A6400. I purchased the a5100 as a secondary camera in the hope to use my kit lens which isn’t otherwise being used. I will be able to use the 10-18mm as that doesn’t have power zoom but means I will have to remove when I’m out and about with the A6400. My next smallest prime is a 35mm. The other option is I get the 16mm f2.8 which is a quarter of the price of the sigma.

    For me the key in this video was the following hint "Some settings might require some tweaking like ISO, aperture and shutter speed (though a nice rule of thumb is x2 your fps, so for 60fps you'll want to use a shutter speed of 1/125)". Changing shutter speed improved the video quality dramatically.

    The a5100 doesn't output full quality 1080 bitrate video unless the recording feature is running. Not enough processing power. Compare a recorded SD file and youll see what I mean.

    Hi. Yes, the AF can be tricky in certain lighting conditions. Personally I've moved away from AF on th A5100 because of the hunting issues. But, if you want to use the AF, try setting the focus mode to "center", if you're mostly center frame, as this is the most reliable AF setting imo. Also, you can try different lighting setups, more contrast between yourself and the background will make it easier for the camera to lock on to you.
