German functional harmony (including only which is relevant to this video):
T (Tonic) = I
Sp (Subdominant Parallel) = ii
Dp (Dominant Parallel) = iii
S (Subdominant) = IV
D (Dominant) = V
Tp (Tonic Parallel) = vi
t (tonic) = i
s (subdominant) = iv
(D)s (Intermediary Dominant to the subdominant) = Usually the Dominant Seventh chord or an incomplete dominant seventh chord (D7 without root) to the target chord, in this case the subdominant. It usually serves the purpose of leading into the target chord.
Example: subdominant of the a-minor scale is the d-minor chord. The Dominant to d minor is A-Major.
The A-Major-Seventh chord is the intermediary Dominant to the subdominant in the a minor scale.
This video was quite a piece of work, remind me to never make such a long video ever again. I also totally missed an opportunity to color the tracks in the showcase at the very end in white, blue and red ;_;

    I believe it was about half a year working on and off (not counting the things I learned from making the first part on Russian Songs) I fortunately always had time right before classes that I could spend in the library, so I was able to get through the books, which were my main source for the first three sections of this video, during that time. It would have really taken forever otherwise D:

    Thanks, I'm glad to hear that you liked it! True, there aren't many sources on that topic and composers who try to compose Russian sounding music usually don't go more in depth than just using traditional Russian instruments. Hopefully this video will start more focused discussions about this topic in the composer community. ^^

    I think you should use zither vsts for gusli instead of harps, since the harp' s sound is too recognizable and the gusli not only sounds like a zither, in my opinion it is a zither. you can find good quality free vsts on the internet, I have like three of them but I don't remember their names apart from the fretless zither by versillian studios. but there are more

    PERFECT VIDEO! MAN. You really dissecated the elements of Russian folk music.... It would be great to see a video about soviet music (like the one Basil Poledouris composed to the movie "Hunt for the red october"
