I have done quite a few grayscale pictures with colored pencils. A couple things I enjoy about them is that you don't have the black outlines found in most adult coloring books, which in my opinion tend to diminish the quality of the finished work. I still do color in books just for the fun of it, but I like the professional results that grayscale copies provide. I make my own grayscale copies with my computer and printer, and also print out a color reference to ensure that I get the colors and tones correct, although sometimes I do change the color(s), for instance if I want a blue flower instead of a yellow one, etc. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing your talent and skill with us! Much appreciated and keep up your excellent work! :-)

The page with the stairway behind the open door with the strawberry looks like just before a summer thunder storm; those dusky purples and greys are terrific. I think the muted result on the colors gives it a dreamy kind of Giladriel-of-the-forest feel. Thanks for the video. helped me a lot. Cheers!

Great tutorial! i also prefer using either isopropyl alcohol or fingernail polish remover with a brush because I really like how it smooths out the roughness of the colors and blends them very nicely. I have not tried using a paper stump, but I will in my next project. The one reason that I do not use a colorless blender is that it pushes down the fibers of the paper which causes the paper to loose its tooth, and I cannot then layer more colors after I have polished with the colorless blender. Chemical blenders not only melt the binder quite nicely, but it also allows me to continue layering on top of the blended areas, after they are dry. Thanks again for sharing!

I try quite a few different brands and find most of the time the cheaper pencils work better than the fancy name brands. I also have black widows and quite like them.

I really like the way you teach. The lesson on grayscale was great. One of the main issues I have with grayscale is the background. Sometimes these grayscale books make it impossible to figure out what it is or where the separation is in the background. Just like the picture you did with the flowers the background has some kind of greenery or bushes and it is difficult to see how to color it in separations because everything is so tightly push together. Hope to see how you do the background, this is what stops me from finishing a grayscale picture.

I started out by printing my grayscale, but when I realized how much printer ink it takes and how expensive my ink truly is... I started trying to embrace the books themselves. I'm on a pretty tight budget for coloring, so I really have to be careful about where my money goes. A lot of times, it's a trade-off. Do I want Polychromos? If so, I've got to cut down on the printer ink cost. Haha. The Gamsol doesn't bother me at all, but I do worry about the dogs. I try to make it quick when I use it for that reason.

I was looking at grey scale coloring books and was wondering if they would be good for a beginner. I found them intriguing and so want to try one. I saw what you mean about the paper quality and used to think it was just my lack of coloring skills that cause it not to look a "creamy". I am so glad you did this video because now I can't wait to get my first grey scale coloring book. Right now I just have cheap coloring books, nothing of good quality so I will be looking for a better quality coloring book. Thanks Erin! Hugs, Brenda

Hi Catrena! Thanks for commenting, but as I demonstrated in the video, with this type of paper in this book, the Prismacolor blender pencil isn't an option. It creates a gray mess. Odorless mineral spirits is the only real option on this particular paper. Otherwise, I would have used the colorless blender pencil. It's one of my favorite tools.

I used the Prismacolor blender but I hated the scratchy feel. Plus it hurt my wrists. The gamsol is so much easier on my hands and I like the feel of a brush on top of the colored pencil. Almost feels like I'm 'painting!' I do like my Caran d'Ache blender for my Polychromos and Derwent Artist pencils though, it works beautifully and isn't as dry and scratchy as the prismacolor blender.

Hi Janet! Doing a background in grayscale is just like doing the rest! Use your light, medium, and dark colors to lightly layer over the different values. :) I've done a few videos on my channel about how to do backgrounds, so if you're interested, there's one on how I used colored pencils (Prismacolor) to do a nice, blended background on a page in Maskara. It's all just light layering, really. Happy Coloring!

Nope! If anything, it'll allow you to get more vibrancy if you're working on an otherwise "squishy" book. Does that make sense?

I'm not gonna lie. Grayscale scares the hell out of me. I know I know it's just a damn coloring book but it still intimidates me. But I really want to try. I have a 100 pack of crayolas. I bought them for my grandson. Lol

You can do it. I have faith! Just remember to look at it objectively and put the colors where they belong. Once you do the first one, you won't want to stop!

There are times when I enjoy intricate things... I color them with gel pens or something. Most of the time, I like a good mix of intricate and open space.
