Thank you Liz! I can't go out much and the only stone outside here is oolitic limestone. When I watch your videos I feel like I'm right there with you. It's like going on holiday. I cleaned a huge batch recently...main thing is to get as much clay off of them as possible...preferably, NOT in the sink...the clay builds up and leads to plumbing issues ;) Then to get rid of the red oxide covering most crystals...Go to walmart...get some "Iron Out"...it is a dry powder...add it to your crystals and water...then wait and let your crystals soak until perfectly clear...mine soaked for about 2 weeks in the Iron Out...use gloves to take your crystals out...iron out may be sensitive to your skin and eyes....then spray them off...and you are done.

This was so good. It made Crystal really clean

I use a small sand blaster filled with baking soda (which is softer than quartz) to carefully sandblast all dirt and oxidation away. Crystals come out perfectly clean and museum quality first pass. It's damn near a miracle how pristine they come out....like they never saw the earth at all! You should try it! It saves hours of work and really preserves your treasures. Very nice video! I would give almost anything to visit Australia and go rock hounding and gold detecting!

Hey Liz we have found a brilliant spot in South Africa to find some clear Quarts :) they are beautifull..and big too clusters that are as big as your hands and a whole bunch of shards 😁

Great finds there, very clear. We found some large ones that have a rough, ugly quartz or calcite coating over the smooth facets that is very hard to remove. Have you come across this?

I found a cristal in the french alps who is literraly the same as the one shown at 8:11 but with some iron oxydes on it, they are twins !

I use similar techniques to clean my crystals. I purchased a set of cheap metal picks from harbor freight to pick the clay out of clusters.

Have you ever considered using a waterpik (water flosser)? I would think it would work great. Love your videos! Dave

This was an OUTSTANDING suggestion! I just got me some skeletal Herkimer Diamonds that had a lot of dirt embedded in them. I just got finished cleaning them and they look beautiful now! Of course, my only suggestion is that you get a splash shield to keep it from blowing all the dirt all over the place. Yeah...I made a mess and had to clean it up.

Love your videos. I've quickly become addicted. i used to live in Kellogg idaho surrounded by old mines and mountains. i used to go out nearly everyday and come home with a bucket full of crystals as well as some bits of gold chips. i was im heaven. anyway, i have some quarts crystals where they had cute tiny baby crystals that had broken off. i dont want to throw em out (of course not) but they are very tiny. but also in perfect shape, some double pointed. anyway, i was thinking of making them into a ring somehow together. how would you go about that? i dont want to ruin them though somehow as i can only think of using either glue, or embedding them into clay. although i am unsure if they will fire well. i have been in love with crystals gems and rocks my entire life, however, never turned them into jewellery except for a few necklaces and dont know much about that.. what do you do if you get very tiny pieces? Sorry for this very long comment! just love your videos and very curious to see what you think as well. thank you so much for sharing these wonderful videos and soo glad ive run into you:)

I like your technique to look for gems and how you can tell if it's just a rock or gem, I can never fine gem stones I really want for display and decoration so I'm down and hopeless for any stones. 😞😞😞😢😞😢

Hey liz , I found some huge golden healer quartz clusters on my hikes , been in ground for years as they are coated with a layer if rust iron . Almost milky yellow. I'm just trying to soak them in just bleach with no acid do far. Would bleach eat up mist of the ugly rust bumps and flakes coating on the points ?? The points on these are really unique and perfect but wanna shine them up . Thanks .

Hi Morgan, Rust stains on quartz can only be remove with acid. There's a few articles on the net on how to clean quartz. I can't suggest or recommend a specific method as not all quartz crystals are the same. Different quartz from different areas will require different methods of cleaning. Hi Liz, a question was asked a month ago and I can't find your answer. it was - if it's ok to use an Ultrasonic bath on crystals? Also I have some gem stones that need cleaning maybe with the Ultrasonic bath also?

Sorry took a while for me to get here David as I get quite a few comments and only now have the time to answer them. Ultrasonic cleaners are only good for getting rid of dirt or surface bake on clay which needs to be soaked and dry, then soak and dry before putting into ultrasonic bath. You can also clean hard gemstones but avoid using it on soft gemstones such as opal or turquoise for example. Cheers, Liz

Hi Liz thank you so much for this as always superb video. Wal sounds just like my hubby, pulling me away from digs or worrying about the dark!! LOL The crystals I find are more like rock crystals and come with a "skin" for lack of a better term and also a harsh black almost tar looking areas. Oxalic acid does not even remove it at most of the times!! I do not like using the acid either, it dissolves everything but what you really want it to dissolve!! I shall have to figure out how to get some pics to you so you can possibly give me some suggestions!! Always enjoy your videos, keep sparkling :-)

Curious what land/geological areas or signs you look for however that could be of use anywhere I rock hound?

Can we use an electrical brush ?

Cool video, just as a helpful reminder try not to clean your specimens from the mud/dirt in your household sinks as the mud gets trapped in the pipes and can be costly to fix. I see your crystals are really clear, here in Colorado they are heavily stained with iron oxide, quite a chore to clean off. Boric acid is really the only way to remove the stain.

Oh, and since this video's host is apparently nontoxic in procedure (unless using wood bleach of course) what is you're experience with any acid? Especially muriatic. It looks like a sweep approach, but we all should be skeptics. You're honest take good lady?!

I have never cleaned these crystals but when I watched you picking and brushing and scaping...my first thought was use an ultrasonic cleaner with Oxalic acid.Then you mentioned both of these and I am wondering why you didn't just ultrasonicate the lot. On a slightly related susbject...Did you know lichens use Oxalic acid to breakdown granite and quartz to get the minerals out? Nice little hoard of crystals you got there.

Thank you for watching and commenting m3sca1. With these "Nundle Diamonds", I really want to keep them as natural as possible. Untouched by harsh chemicals. Using Oxalic Acid will clean oxide film or iron stains and can dissolve granite or marble. So it's important to clean off the mud before soaking/cooking them in oxalic acid (long process). Unfortunately, Ultrasonic cleaners can't take off large clumps of dirt that's why it has to be done manually first to soften the mud. All the very best, Liz

NEVER. I use a large sponge to take the dirty water out from the sink and into a bucket and pour it into the garden. Cheers, Liz

I'm just starting my collection of crystals, mainly amethyst matrixes. Can I use water to clean any type of crystal or do some have chemical reactions? I'm scared to actually clean the ones I have now.

+Bryanna Shields Hi Bryanna, Water and detergent is fine. Using the right acid also works great; as this is how they clean most of the crystals that is being sold. In saying that, just a word of caution; one has to be careful when working with acid as a lot of great specimen can also be easily damaged. Do your research first. All the best, Liz

Quartz can only be dissolved in one acid that I know of - and it's so dangerous it would be very unlikely you could get it. Oxalic and dilute muriatic (pool cleaning) acid are commonly used, but precautions and safe handling techniques should be used. Vinegar works to dissolve calcite coatings, but takes a lot of time to work. Other crystals require different methods.

How can I buy it ?

How do you get them to shine and sparkle? after you wash them with water?

Thanks for watching Lea. If you're after individual crystal from a cluster, I would suggest using a wet saw and cutting across between the matrix and the crystals. You can also chip away sections of individual crystals using a Tile Snip as long as the matrix is thin enough to be chipped. Good luck and all the very best, Liz

Quartz (hardness = 7) is harder than iron/steel (hardness = 5.5) so knife can not scratch quartz, most acids can get rid of iron rust, but cannot remove other minerals/rocks attached to quartz.

Borax works well, longer than acids though.

I hope someone can help me. I had a piece of rock with crystals all over it ....I do not know what kind. I had rinsed it off a few times to remove dust and then I learned about water deposits from my well water. The crystals weren't shining like they used to so I tried vinegar, soap and water, Windex, lemon juice, still I could see a stain on the surface of the bigger square crystals so I used a tiny toothbrush and baking soda and vinegar to scrub it off. Nothing was working and now the biggest crystals are dull....I guess I scratched them ? 😩 Any way to restore the sparkle?

You'll need to use Oxalic acid to bring back the shine. Unfortunately, this is caustic and care should be taken in cooking the crystals. The easiest way is to get some Ali brite cleaner. Soak it for a week and wash off and dry to check if it works. If not leave it a little bit longer. Always wear gloves in handling these chemicals. Good luck.

I do 100% muriatic acid , more dangerous but I think the best results

I took my 2 grandsons to a So Cal mine where they bring out some dirt from the mine and put in pile. Then you grab a buck and fill it, take to your work station and look for treasure. One boy got a huge crystal. They said where did you found. He said at top. He helped a small boy fill his bucket and then his own. The man looked at it and said go lock that in your car. He said if we get a certain prospect and soak it and clean...said the rust would turn blue. Forgot name of product .. Never could find. Do you know what it is?

Hi, this is JC. I've been collecting gemstones (rough) at the beach near to my house namely agates, rose quartz, chalk turquoise, citrine, jaspers (yellow and red), chalcedony and milky quartz. I don't have machines at home and I tried to use sandpapers but it gives rough surface after the stone gets dry. Honestly, I am from Philippines and I am looking for people to help me find affordable and convenient products to make my gems more beautiful to look at. Or it could be that someone will take my gems and polish them all for me and name a price. I just want to get them cleaned up like real jewelries. Thanks a lot!

Maybe this is an ignorant comment but have you ever tried to clean them with a water pix? I think it would be gentler than the steel pin.

Hi Jessica, Dust on quartz crystals can be easily cleaned off by using a drop of dish washing liquid and water and a soft long bristled brush. Soak the crystal for a few minutes, scrub lightly, rinse with clean water and dry. Thanks for watching and hope this helps. Cheers, Liz

when you are using any thing to pick out the dirt, you must be very careful not to break the crystal
