How to Clean Washing Machine
Option 1: The easiest and most effective: Affresh washing machine cleaning tablets. They are so convenient and do an amazing job at cleaning your washing machine. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a slow-dissolve, foaming tablet that gets under residue, breaks it up, and then washes it away. I use this once every 3 months to keep my washing machine clean and preventing mildew build-up and smell. Afresh works with both top and front loading washing machines. Place one tablet in the washing tub, not the soap dispenser. Run your washing machine on a normal cycle on hot. When it’s done, if there is any residue visible, just wipe that off.
Option 2. vinegar and baking soda, but not at the same time. First, Add 2 cups of white cleaning vinegar. Run it through a complete cycle on the highest level and the hottest water possible. Then run a second load with ½ cup baking soda, again on the highest water temperature available.
Option 3. Bleach. Run a load with hot water and 1 cup of bleach. Run it on hot for the longest cycle possible. This helps to sanitize and deodorize your washing machine.

Speed queen machines are the best!! Metal gears instead of belts, designed for commercial use but can have for your home ABC warehouse sells them I believe. The older style do seem to be more reliable and the speed queen is the commercial version of the old style with agitator. Shouldn't cost more than a modern HE one either. But it will be more than the residential old style.

Also, for those who have front load especially but top load too HE washer, leave door open after loads at least for a while. My HE top load I leave open all the time Also, for HE front and top loaders, read your manual on how to pull dispenser tray. Just bought a house with Samsung top load HE and pulled the tray. Nasty black both in back of tray and in the hole the tray goes in. I used bleach water and scrub brush. Most people overlook the dispenser tray. Which adds in more mold every wash even if you're cleaning the inside. I now also leave the tray open as there's water in there and no way to get the water out from inside the hole where the tray goes since it's closes the hole where the tray sits when you close the tray.

@@CleanFreakGermaphobe The Tide washing machine cleaner packs do not get it fully cleaned as Affresh does. When you use affresh on a front loading washer, you run it on the "self clean" cycle and it goes for almost 3 hours. You only need to clean it once every 3 months that way. With the Tide you need it once or twice a month.

I share a washer and dryer with 3 other households, we rent! I am the only one that ever cleans it! I use the cleaner every so often, but I run bleach through the washer with hot water and extra rinse before I wash my clothes, one neighbor uses an enormous amount of soaps and fabric softener and I am allergic to it, the backwash of her laundry can clean an entire load of mine without me using anything but water, thanks for the steam cleaner trick, the rim seems to be the crudiest

Don’t buy a new HE washer please, they’re electronic junk. Everyone has had endless issues with them and all people have done is complained about them because of how unreliable they are. The machine you have will last forever, it’s a whirlpool direct drive with the Maytag label thrown on, as whirlpool bought out Maytag long ago. If you ever need to replace it for any reason just buy a used old school machine like the one you have. They’re proven to be very reliable, I own one myself

I have Samsung top load HE washer that came with the house I bought. The side load have many more issues because of the tub bearings But when I need a new one I'll be getting a speed queen. They are commercial washers you can buy at ABC. They have the agitator and all gears, no belts. Meant to be used in laundromats and apartment laundry rooms and work for years and a million loads. But so far no issues at all with Samsung top load, besides all the cleaning I did when I moved in. Everyone pull your dispenser tray and clean it!!! Lol. Everyone forgets about that

I have a top loading HE and it’s fine. It’s an older model and I would never get a side loader. Very bad for your back and unless you stack them. This tutorial is for older machines which a lot of people still have but why do people need to go out and buy a steamer? Worst advice ever.

  • @Goldenwoodz

@@montana1080 I never said anything about a front loader? I was talking about the classic top load mechanical machines before HE corrupted the industry. The HE machines are junk no matter what style they are, fake agitator to wash plate they still just don’t perform nearly as well as the classics. Motors are not as strong, or reliable, too much unnecessary sensing happening during the cycle, and most of them barley use any water.

It’s very saddening that whirlpool and others have to follow insane and ridiculous energy requirements given the HE machines will over sense and use more energy and water by sensing the load and it trying to rebalance it we had an atrocity of a whirlpool cabrio for 12 years and it went thru more energy and water than the last two old whirlpool direct drives combined that we had before that machine

I was looking at new washing machines last year. I decided I would use my old one until it broke. It recently broke the inner plastic tub cracked and all of the water went all over the floor. It was 18 years old. I should have bought a new one when I was looking, breaking like that never occurred to me. I just thought one day it just wouldn't turn on.

Look under the rubber tub if you have a front load washer cause I have the same problem but only with towels. Also clean the filter and drain the water in the short tube. That causes mildew and odor if not cleaned once a month also. The filter door should be on the bottom left of the machine if you have a front loader and don’t forget the rubber drum to clean under. Looks like a lot of work but you have to find time. I did this cleaning on the washer regular for years but got lazy and forgot to do it as much here in the last few years. It takes 10-15 mins tops but worth it to do

If they're towels, wash with hotter water. Most people try and use cold washes now, but there are parts of the detergent that work best with warm/hot water. If the towels are 100% cotton, wash in hot. I had this issues with my towels. I know they make a tide cold water but I still don't think it works as well as using warm/hot water. Also, run your washer on hot with a cup or 2 of bleach only in it. If it has a "cleaning" cycle use that because with HE washers the water is never very high but the clean cycle actually fills the tub higher than it ever does for laundry so it'll get spots that the cleaners won't. If it's an older washer and not HE, run on Hot and largest load. Lots of water but need to get all in there with the bleach water. I've also heard great things about using 20 mule team brand Borax to clean machines, but I haven't tried yet.
