Review and Test of Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner Tabs

Find Affresh tabs on amazon here:

I had a washing machine at home that was starting to smell. The odor got to the point I had to try something. After I researched different cleaning methods (vinegar, bleach... etc.) I stumbled across Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner Tabs. These things worked so well on my washer at home I had to try it on our commercial units at work to see what would happen.
This product is the real deal. It says it is the number 1 recommended brand by whirlpool, maytag, and amana washers. After trying it on my one at home and the speed queen brand at work I can say that I am officially impressed!

I know right! They make ones for a dishwasher too. About once every other month I run one through there too. Glad you found it helpful!

Don't forget to clean that gasket in the front load washer! That's where all the junk build up is and where the smell starts. The drum looks clean because it's the easiest to access but the gasket is where everything hides.

Yeah. I’ve had a front loader before. And they can get gross if you don’t clean them regularly. I prefer the top loaders.

@@SkyManagement I know I'm commenting a lot (super enjoyed this video) and am likely not saying anything you don't know, but leaving the door of your washers, esp your front loaders, open between loads really helps ventilate the drum and prevent mildew. Well, mostly. Other factors obviously apply.

My front load washer has a cleaning cycle. The selector dial actually says "Clean washer with Afresh ". The cleaning cycle works great, much more water then a regular wash cycle. Makes foam up to the top of the glass.

My washer had none of that residue after using the Affresh. Older machine and first time using Affresh. How can that be?

If you live in an area with really hard water (lots of dissolved minerals in it, you can get hard water test strips from a hardware store or Amazon), then after you run the Afresh cycle, use a microfiber cloth to buff away the hard water build up. I'll spray mine with vinegar, too, and let it sit, then run again with another Afresh tablet. I hate doing two cycles as those tablets cost money, but once your drum doesn't have the mineral build up anymore, using these tablets helps.

How can you know it’s clean inside without dissembling the washer?

  • @SkyManagement

officially... you will not be able to "prove" it is clean without taking the entire machine apart. Bottom line is that the majority of soap scum, mold, mildew, calcification, lime buildup etc... will be removed with proper cleaning. Most people have hard water (meaning high in minerals) that help some of these items get a foothold behind the drum. You can run bleach and white vinegar through on a sanitary cycle and likely get similar results. This product just makes it easier.

You can still use it but it may not dissolve the tablet completely. If you have no hot water place a tab in the washer and use a cup of vinegar in the cycle. This may aid in breaking up the tablet and also help remove hard water buildup such as calcium and lime

@@SkyManagement Yup yup! Vinegar, when used properly, can really extend the life of the washer. I don't recommend it often, but it works, as they say, in a pinch. It's just so important to properly measure.

If you use bleach when washing whites, I think it does enough to kill the bacteria and prevent build up. I think the key issue is people close the lid after washes. The lid needs to be opened to allow the drum to dry.
