One important remark Brian: When the thermal paste is dry - its thermal conducting qualities remain. the thermal paste is oily only in its early stage so you the user will be able to spread it. once its cure and all dry it function as good as new. so do not replace the thermal paste just because its dry. this treatment for the motherboard bridge was essentially not necessary - save your time in future cleaning. e.g same goes for motherboard's voltage regulator cleaning of the heat sinks. you do not need to disassemble them. clean the motherboard with all of its attachments remain in their place. the manufacturer original attachment works continue to do their job properly.

Heh. Oops. Removed my mobo's onboard gpu heatsink thinking it was just thermal paste or padding underneath. Still not sure what it is. Cured silicone adhesive or epoxy something or other? Anyways. In a pickle now. Scraped most of it off very carefully with a toothpick while it was still warm from running at load for an hour or so. Getting it off the heatsink is another story since, being a heatsink, it cooled down fast. And I don't want to damage or remove the foam strips surrounding it. Gonna try and go at it w WD40 SCC and hope the foam stays in place. Iso alcohol does nothing to it lol.

Re: PSU discharging. The best practice that I have been doing for 25+ years of PC building is to turn off the PSU switch, hold the PC's power button for 5 or so seconds while still plugged into the wall BEFORE you even think about dismounting it from the case, and voila! Discharged!! This goes for all electronics really.

instead of alcohol wipes you can use coffee filters and isopropanol alcohol. If isopropanol is unavailable, regular alcohol from the drug store (I think ethanol) also does the job. Coffee filters are very clean, don't leave fibers (unless they break with sticky or sharp things) and they even help in filtering impurities.

Now I’m not sure about brake cleaner because it has mixed reviews and mixed studies behind its corrosiveness over time to components but what is super helpful I just found out today if anyone stumbles across this comment that you would enjoy a little DIY and should check out is how to make your own back plate for your graphics card, a simple acrylic panel cut down to size and double sided mounting tape stuck to the highest point mounting screws on the GPU back to keep your GPU back exposed board from getting dusty and possibly shorting out from dust build up, another awesome thing to lengthen the cleanliness lifespan of your graphics card or motherboard is to pick up some CRC Dielectric Grease from Lowe’s and use a Q-tip or fine paint brush to coat the back portion of the cuircut board evenly with the grease (DO NOT PUT THE GREASE INSIDE A SOCKET OR PLUG) Seems weird but it’s non-conductive meaning it won’t short out or bridge connections from being on there and it protects the back from moisture, static shock and if you put an acrylic back to it you made yourself then it looks that much more professional, glossy, clean and beautiful in your PC build

Brake cleaner (specifically that exact brand) is light hydrotreated naptha. It has probably 1 to 2% BENZENE in it. Yes the stuff that will give you cancer and has been heavily regulated in petrol. It is readily absorbed through skin. You REALLY want to start using gloves. I actually work as a refinery operator and make the stuff and it is common for older operators on this type of plant who regularly got it on their hands to have specific cancers by about age 60...

Hey mate, I love your vids, and i know this is an old vid and Im sure you've had no issues, but Be 100% careful as most brake-cleaners are not alcohol but ACETONE, toluene etc! Industrial solvents. This can strip the board completely and and destroy the plastics. Motherboard PCBs have plastics and are made of epoxy based surface glues. Acetone completely fucks the strength of these epoxies. CRC 556 is essentially petroleum again, not compatible with anything on a computer. If you want the same outcomes, use IPA and Innox. IPA is actually alcohol, and Innox is mineral oil that is non-conductive, non- static, and doesn't dry out. Better off using IPA and putting it in a solvent resistant pressurized spray bottle and then displacing any excess with pressurized air (cold) and finishing with Innox. Much safer, much better.

Dust sticks to WD-40 residue. I had an employee apply it to A/C supply register grille's and in inside HVAC VFD controllers in several office buildings. They looked incredible for about a week and then it got ridiculous from there. You will have tremendous buildup of dust quickly sticking to the WD-40 coating inside your PC case if you use WD-40. It would be much smarter to use only brake cleaner or alcohol cleaning components.

I personally like 90 - 99% isopropyl alcohol in a new spray bottle, a soft bristle toothbrush, and soft clean lint free clothes. I also have a big shop air compressor with an inline water filter, and adjustable pressure, but I can't recommend it for everyone due to the cost, but I also work on cars, trucks, lawnmowers, etc.. so it was worth the investment for me, but to everyone else a DataVac would a good choice, or a portable electric air compressor that has a pressure regulator(they are usually sold for blowing up pool floats, and what not).

The board looks like new. Worked when I bagged it up years ago. It would beep sometimes but other than fans spinning…nothing. Tried different CPU’s, Ram, power supplies, and video cards. Same result. Saw your video. Sprayed the crap out of it with CRC Brakleen. Sprayed a lot on the Ram slots. Let it sit for 24 hours. Put the first components I had on hand in. Fired right up with first push of the power button. I’m a believer in the Brakleen. Haven’t tried the WD40 yet. I’m sure I will. I use it for everything else.

Absolutely! I use Berryman's B-12 formula in each the break cleaner & carb & choke, it cleans residue free for thermal paste oils & finish w/ 91% ethanol (or strongest alcohol) . Just keep in mind these items are highly flammable so take care of where you work and vent out vapors before powering up. I have not to tried the brake cleaner or such on anything non metal as it can be harsh on plastics. My concerns would be removing any protective coatings & adhesives. It can ruin any fine finish plastics & painted surfaces., (it's the chlorinated bits that are strong) I use Tuner-Kleen'r (TV-Tuner / radio / switches / contacts) cleaners & compressed air on PCB sockets & contacts (because I have it) but DeOxit is brilliant as well as it is what it was designed for but expensive & hard to get locally. Fry's used to sell it in the day till restrictions . To be fair, U can actually use a non residue dish or jewelers washing liquid (Cascade no spots) in a dishwasher & it comes out squeaky clean (or handwashing with light brush). I use this method for my arcade coin mechs (electronic & mechanical (slug rejecters) & locking units . loads of fun. Good video Brian.

I got some WD40 SCC to remove the silicone adhesive or epoxy something or other after removing my onboard gpu heatsink (really wish I hadn't now lmao). Thought it would just be thermal paste or padding under there. Iso alc does nothing to the gummy pink residue. Gonna replace it with a thermal pad if I can manage to remove this crap. Just don't want to damage the foam padding in a square around the pink glue still on there. Which, I imagine the WD40 SCC will remove the adhesive beneath it as well... Maybe if I cut thin lines of the thicker thermal pads I have to replace it with? It says it's non-conductive 🤔

Here in Canada, ECC cleaner is about the same price as brake cleaner. But you have to go to electronic components shops. You can even get better prices than Amazon. A Montreal shop sells ECC cleaner for $9.99 for 20 oz/500 g. For alcohol wipes, office supplies stores and pharmacies are the way to go. But for big jobs I'd use lint free rags with 99.9% isopropyl alcohol. You can get bottles of the stuff for cheap even at corner stores.

I recall about 30 years ago getting a sample spray can of TV tuner cleaner, used to clean the contacts for a mechanical TV tuner. I wasn't in the shop at the time, but my partner was. He saw a roach walking across the floor, and for some reason decided to spray it with the tuner cleaner. It was under high pressure and so sprayed in a narrow cone a long distance (much higher pressure than expected for what it was). My partner said the roach made maybe two more steps before rolling over, twitching, and stopping. If it would kill a roach that fast, what the hell was it doing to us if we used it?

I read many negative comments about using WD40 on electronics: WD40 leaves oily residue to which dust will stick. I'm also not fully convinced about using brake cleaner -- if you use it, make sure that it won't destroy plastics and rubber (read manufacturer's notes).

Everyone is freaking, but here in the states, they sell a version of WD-40 Specialist "Contact Cleaner" that you can pick up from Home Depot for around $6.97. On the product overview "it's ideal for use on printed circuit boards, controls, switches, precision instruments and electric panels." Now shamefully, Home Depot also sells Heat sink compound in a 3 oz tube for $6.50, yes...3 oz...This will last you about roughly 500 pc builds. Even the maker of the compound answered questions on the product about the performance on pc builds with it. So for you thrifty builders, this is a god send!

"Brake cleaner is sometimes known to eat away at plastic"............ So plastic, like DIMM slots, PCIE slots, capacitor casings, SATA ports, MoBo USB connections and others? I've been in the industry for many years and would not use brake cleaner on populated PCB, ever. You can buy electronic cleaning solvent for this purpose (try Jaycar in Australia). I love Bryan's videos, but hate the idea of Brake cleaner for this purpose.

I found something that brake cleaner (at least the stuff in Canada) destroys instantly. The clear plastic portion of a stock intel heatsink instantly falls apart, I was just using a bit to clean some goo off the bottom of a motherboard and then the heatsink just fell off. I thought it must not have been attached properly but then I notices it was crumbled. I tested it on another one I have and same thing, 2 seconds after contact it is about as strong as wet sugar.

One serious question though - I noted you mentioned to watch the brake cleaner in your case because of the amount of plastic there. Makes sense to me however, aren't a lot of the connectors on a MB plastic too? So I guess Im asking why okay for the MB and not for the case? Thanks a lot for reading. There are two types of soldering: SMD: Place the compontents on a board with pre-apllied solder, then put the whole thing into a very hot oven. After that they use THT tech for the rest of the connectors: Stick the components through the board and then solder them on with an iron or a soldering machine. THT components are a lot less exposed to heat as they only heat up for a very short time. --> They use softer plastic for them USB headers are a good example for that. You will see the small legs of them soldered on the other side of the board

For USD $9-10, CRC makes aerosol cleaners for electrical parts like alternators and starters as well as one for electrical connectors and circuit boards. I don't know if they are quite as effective as brake clean for tough cleaning, but they are much safer by design for use on electrical components. For comparison, name brand brake clean around here is $7 a can, store brand is $5.
