How to Clean the Drinkwell Mini
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
The Drinkwell Mini is one of the smaller, if not the smallest pet water fountain I've seen, and would work well for those with limited space.
As always, please be sure to thoroughly clean your pet water fountain regularly, at least every other day, or perhaps every three days. You don't want gunk and biofilm and other stuff to accumulate and fester in your water fountain, or a thick hard water deposit to become encrusted around the rim. The filter should be replaced every 1-2 weeks. You might be able to stretch it to 3 weeks, but I'd recommend changing it when it becomes discoloured or slimy.

Thank you for showing us cat parents gow to properly clean the drinkwell fountains. No matter how much hot water i let it soak in the particles wouldnt leave, now i know i needed to clean the mother and the inside. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for this video, I have thos exact same water fountain for my cat, I couldn't get it apart I thought I was going to break it after watching this video I was able to disassemble clean and put it back together, I truly appreciate you
Omg I had no idea there was an extra compartment to clean. You saved me and my little Simba. Thank you so much for the video
Thanks for showing how to take it apart and how to clean it, well done video.
The details on how to take it apart were a helpful reminder. But though your cats might not like to drink from the stream, that is exactly WHY I have this fountain! My guy is attracted to water running in the sink or tube, and this does the same thing. He loves reaching out and lapping at the water!
Thanks for the video, really helped. Mine was putting out very little water and cleaning it fixed the problem.
This was great thank you I didnt' know all the details of how to take it all apart. Very very useful video.
I have this same fountain. Just finished cleaning it after watching this video. There was a lot of black gunk in and around the pump. Thanks for the very informative and thorough video. My little Stitchie should be very happy.

Thanks! Mine wasn’t working and I had no idea about the motor and cleaning it, it was disgusting and clogged with cat hair. I’m just glad my cat didn’t get sick from it. I got it flowing perfectly again, thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. Helped me fix my fluffy’s fountain completely. 🤗🥰
Excellent demonstration of disassembly! The plastic housing that conceals the motor is reeeeeally hard to remove. I had to use a small slot screwdriver to pry it open. Thank you for the reassurance that it won’t break… that was all I needed to succeed!

According to my instructions the black side of the charcoal filter should be facing the front of the machine. So the one you are demonstrating has the filter in backwards. Turn it around.

This helped assemble. Lost the manual. Thanks very much!!!
Great video on the topic, Looks as though they made the pump non removable which is an issue for replacement in the future, other pet smart fountains don't have this issue. I did purchase some so I will have to investigate to see if there is a work around.

Or you can use a flat nose plier it's an easy tool to pull out black pieces even to pull out the piece inside "White/black" the one looks like has fan blades.
Good tutorial, but.....the Petsafe instructions for Drinkwell Mini, "insert the filter diagonally with the black side gacing the front and narrow side". I'll follow the written inst. instructions
Thank you very good video
Thank you for this video however you didn't say where you add the water?
Vinegar is great for pet saliva slime and biofilm build up. I once used ajax to try to scrub it off my dogs bowl and it didnt work as well PLUS my dog looked like he had consumed residual ajax and was in pain for a day. wish I had looked into how to properly do it before.
Thank you for an informative how-to. I struggle with separating the middle (upper) compartment from the base - I worry about breaking something - is there a trick to getting the pieces apart?

Thanks. I'm glad it was helpful. For this model fountain, white faces front. Water flows through white first, to catch dirt, hair, bugs, etc., and then flows out black. You can consult page 7 of the manual here: support.petsafe.net/s/communitycategoryproduct/a421M0000001vE7QAI/ccp0227 And also info on filters here: support.petsafe.net/s/article/How-the-filter-works-in-your-pet-fountain
I cleaned the motor and noticed that it was much less noisy. Wondering if there's anything else I can do to make this fountain silent.

The bubbler-style water fountains on the "gentle" setting (no flower top, just gurgling water) seem to be the quietest in terms of the sound of running water. The fountains that flow from a spout and fall into a basin seem to sound loudest, in my experience.
Do we also clean the filter as well? The white side isn't very white (we've had it for a while).

@catsandhamsters

You mean that it leaks? I'm not sure from the info you've provided. My best guess is it might have been overfilled and when the water streams out is splashes? Make sure also that the base is securely attached to the top part. Sometimes cats paw the water and it gets everywhere. A mat underneath can help. Otherwise, you might need to contact the store or manufacturer and see if they can troubleshoot or exchange it for you.

Hi, in your professional opinion, for 1 cat, how many times a week do you think it should be cleaned? Daily is exhausting, do you think 3 days is ok?
@catsandhamsters
3 жыл бұрын
I can see how daily can be exhausting! Water fountains aren't easy. But when I'm pet sitting, I wash pet water fountains every other day. Every day if they have visible matter in the water, like bugs and kitty litter. You'd be surprised at how quickly slimey biofilm will build up, especially inside the motor. The more frequently you wash them the easier it is because you don't have to scrub as hard to get off the hard deposits and gunk. Maybe you can try alternating dumping out and refilling the water with cleaning. It's up to your own comfort level, but keep in mind that cats are touching the water directly with their mouths and tongues and sometimes paws, so saliva builds up and can grow bacteria and scum. Like if you were to just fill up a tall glass of water, leave it on the floor, and drink from it over the course of several days without rinsing or washing it. While on the floor, the glass on the floor collects dust, dirt, cat litter, food, bugs, mildew, and other things invisible to the eye until it grows so big you can actually see it.

if you can drink water on your own houshould..like i have..you just have to chance the water every second day, just fil it up so the pump dosent have to work so hard...and clean it with soap each week...and take the filter out...you dont need that,, if you do what i said...and one more thing...have it on a table....higher up. less dust....:) good luck
I have exactly same your cat "Golden persian cat" with hazel/goldish eyes color. Also, same pet water fountain "Drinkwell Mini". The easiest way to take the top apart is from both sides right and left one at a time by pushing below where the top and bottom connected line each side (Hope I made it clear). Two more important things:1- "Don't forget to clean the top part from inside" gets dirty from inside. I used ear swab (Long one) to clean hard to reach areas. 2- Don't forget to clean the part looks like tunnel (where the water come out from the pump) from inside. By the way, my cat is male how about your cat?
The filter, black side faces forward according to the manufacturer. Otherwise, good video.

Glad you liked the video! According to the user's manual, page 7, instruction #4, fig. 1A, the white side faces front. The white side catches all the debris, like bugs, fur, dirt, food, litter, and the black charcoal side purifies the water as it goes out so it tastes better.

@@michellespiegel6726 how interesting! I am going off of the user manual on the product website for the Drinkwell Mini. I had also directly contacted PetSafe, and was instructed that the water always flows through the white part first and out through the black part. This is also mentioned on their website. The Drinkwell Original pet water fountain is the only fountain in this line that has the black part of the filter face front. Perhaps you got an updated version of the Mini with a new design? I had answered a similar question a while back. All Petsafe filters work the same in their fountains. The white part is meant to first catch debris like dust and fur, and the black part treats the water to help it taste better. So water flows in through the white first, then out through the black charcoal side last.

I just double-checked the manual to be sure, and on page 7, figure 1a, you'll see I did it correctly in the video here. The white part faces front, so that water flows in through the white part and out through the black part. I had contacted Petsafe a couple years ago for guidance, and that's how it was explained to me. Should you have further questions, I suggest contacting the manufacturer. They were very quick to respond to my questions.

Just about every filter for pet water fountains works the same way. The white part is meant to catch debris like bugs, lint, and dirt, and the then the charcoal back helps the water taste better.
