Letting your animals breed contributes to the overpopulation problem. There are too many animals in shelters and being euthanized as it is. Also, you cannot count on being able to "give away" kittens to friends and relatives. Better to get them fixed and if friends and family want an animal, they can get one at the shelter.

I can say that absolutely ignoring them every single night after saying "Bedtime!" and feeding them on a reasonable schedule, absolutely works. I've trained several kittens this way, and it ALWAYS works. And trust me, it's hard to ignore a 22-pound maine coon slamming into you at 3 am. But they learn. They're smart animals.

@@aei3t121 aei3 t Nice to hear that my comment was helpful, but I should mention that my cat is almost 9 years old, we didn't get her into her current routine until she was about a year and a half. The routines are similar, but the main difference is feeding. When she was a kitten, she needed to be fed more often but with smaller portions (2 packets of wet food a day: half a packet at 7am, half at 2pm, and full packet about half an hour before you go to bed with no accompanying dry food during the day). 15 minute plays before the smaller meals, and 30-45 minute play before the bigger nighttime feed so they'll sleep through the night. Also; a little advice from a seasoned cat parent - depending on the cat, it could take anywhere between a few days to about a fortnight for them to understand their routine. Don't be tempted to give into the demanding meows for more food, they'll try and push their limits to see what they can get away with, and if you give in, it's a slippery slope to cat obesity & diabetes. You need to be firm, they might not like it at first, but if you love your little fluffball, you shouldn't budge. And they'll eventually learn that begging gets them no where lol I recommend watching My Cat From Hell for the definite no-no's of cat parenting. And if in doubt, Google is your friend :) Have fun and good luck!

you aren't inherently toxic to your new cat just because you have sleep issues, you just might have to get a little more creative if she develops these kinds of problems is all. (some folks have found that their kittehs actually help THEM to get a better sleeping schedule set up, even.) fwiw, my sleep schedule has always been pretty awful too (i'm bipolar ii and in a COVID hot zone), i free-feed mine, and my not-a-kitten pretty much quit doing this once he WASN"T a kitten any more and his mama never really did. (he routinely sleeps/cuddles with me, she'll do it on days that she thinks i need mama-mama cuddles and i treasure both of them deeply.)

And it's funny you say ignore them, cuz I already have been by putting in my head phones and listening to relaxing rain or something to help me pass out again and not have to hear the cat and the ignoring has actually worked. He sometimes wakes at night to meow at nothing here and there but it'll only last for about 10 or 15 straight minutes. Then he goes to sleep. Cats are hilarious animals with so much personality it's just very amusing and entertaining to be a cat owner.

My cat has her own room. Her safe place with a bathroom for her litter box When we go to bed I put her in her room ,give her a treat and close the door. She has her toys , beds and a place to climb. And a big window. She will start meowing when the sun comes up and we let her out for breakfast and loves. When my son had her at his place she would not let him sleep and he worked nights. I adapted her and this works out fine for us. I know everyone doesn't have a house big enough for their cat to have their own bedroom but her having her own space helped with her sleeping all night. Hope this helps

I found a GREAT way to get through that "ignore them" period is to put in ear plugs. Yes that won't stop them from walking on you in bed etc but it WILL block out all the extra noise and help you keep sleeping.

I used the super nanny technique that is used on human kids. When I was in bed and my cat was up being a pain I would pick him up, put him on his bed and say "bedtime" I kept doing that several times and after the third time I didn't say anything to him, just put him back on his bed. My cat sleeps through the night now. Some mornings he wakes up too early and I tell him "its too early go back to bed" and he does

philippa hyndman I believe you 100%...People need to learn to speak to their cats on a regular basis...They are exactly like toddlers...If you've babysat toddlers or worked with children, you can manage a cat...On my day off, we all sleep in...My 3 cats never bother me on my day off because, when I get back from work, I tell them, tomorrow is "cuddle-day" we shall sleep all day and watch horror movies....I guess saying that every day before my day off for years has worked...I communicate with my cats a lot; people think it's crazy but I speak English and bits of my native African language to them and they understand me perfectly.

Love these videos. I always thought it was a dog person until in recent years I've had two cats adopt me one through my sister and another through us or I get sister it just happened. What I thought about 5 years the other arrived only last spring. He was half feral if there's such a thing. At my sister's house he had his come and go with an open window in the basement. My first few months with him here he was whining and crying like a baby every morning before Dawn I wasn't sleeping. Somehow I intuited out to just ignore him and you're right buddy you're right he adapted and you no longer wakes me up so early I'll be at earlier than I used to but I like that. Thanks for validating what I suspected when I wasn't 100% sure. Also thank you for confirming what I just lately started to think about to have set feeding times rather than letting them graze all day which I've been increasingly doing but must stop. Finally so true about how they pick up on our energies on days I feel unsettled or distressed they act the scene and strange and unsettled. But each month ground the other I sure love them oh my God I love them never thought I could just bloody cats but oh my God I love them.

Hey Jackson, thanks for your precious content. Chewb went from being the sweetest cat on earth to being a cat from hell and your advice are helping a lot. She has been sleeping with me every night during years, being extremy cuddly and grooming in bed (but also always moody otherwise, seemed like we had a secret relationship we had to hide in public haha). Until one day, she freaked out and attacked me while I was about to fall asleep. She got so aggressive, I tried to deal with the situation for an hour or so and eventually, I had to leave and go sleep in another room. Since then, things have never been the same again. At some point, I allowed her to sleep with me again. She started to behave weird, like stealing my pillow - I wasnt sure if she wanted to be very close to my head or if she wanted to claim her territory. And she attacked again. And then hell started for real and it's a full story. Now she is under medication, I follow your advice and things are more under control but she still not allowed to sleep with me. I use noise proof headphones and an app with relaxing sounds like waves or forest noise or whatever to be able to sleep while she insist behind the door. Can't wait to go back to normal life :')

I played the ignore, like "nope didn't hear/feel that" for what felt like forever. It was SO hard to just ignore because he would do this for a half hour or more EVERY night. I honestly didn't think it was going to work and then it was like someone had flicked a switch in his head and he stopped bothering me. I don't feed them at night, don't play...just zombie walk to and from the bathroom. So I can say with assurance that if you totally ignore the bad night behaviour your cat will stop bothering you.

My cats have always had a clear bedtime/wakeup routine. I'm very lucky in that the older one has always, ever since she was a kitten, trusted that I would feed her when it was time, and only has woken me up when I've set an alarm that I slept through (she's a good kitty and likes to take care of me as much as I take care of her). The little one is far pushier than the big one, but a routine was established very early. I used to hold her to my chest at night when I first got her because she figured out how to escape the crate and she was trouble with a capital T if left unattended when she first came home. She started to associate this cuddle time with bedtime, so now whenever I lay down, she knows it's time for sleep and comes to curl up with me. While she doesn't wake me up, she'll often watch my face for the first sign I'm starting to stir and the moment I wake up, she's ready for breakfast. She's started lately wanting morning cuddles before breakfast though, so that's bonus cuddle time!

My cat does the exact same thing! He's extremely intelligent and knows what things/sounds bother me the most and will definitely wake me up. If I'm trying to sleep in bed he'll claw at my books, knock my water bottle over, mess with the nightstand, etc. If I'm napping in the living room, he'll knock my phone off the table next to the chair, knock the water bottle off same table (making loud noises). I used to feed him his wet food in the morning but realised he would wake me up two hours before because he wanted it. So I switched his "breakfast" (wet food) to 4-5pm. But to no avail because he'll start bothering me/waking me up at 2pm to remind me that breakfast time is coming! Now he continues to wake me up at 5am because he knows once it gets light out I'll let him out for his outside yard time. But I swear that he definitely knows what to to do irritate me to the point where I absolutely cannot ignore it and continue sleeping! Arrgh! I'm starting to think that before my bed and nap time I just have to put away and move absolutely everything he messes with that he knows gets on my nerves. I don't know what else to do.

Why don’t you put her outside of the bedroom and close the door ? I just my cat about a month and a half ago. She is five months old & I close my bedroom door at night& she’s fine with that until about eight or 8:30 AM (which luckily is about the time I get up anyway) The first two nights she cried a little bit outside the door but that was it never cried again. Cats can get into a routine just as we do, so I shut out the lights in the house & my cat knows it’s Time for Betty bye.

I like the meal feeding, but we have been ignoring our kitty at 3am, but now he's going to our 4 year old sons room and licking him to wake him up so our son will then come wake us up. Smart kitty.

Thank you Jackson! I realize now that my cat has been waking me up in the morning because the stretch of time since her dinner is too long. So I've adjusted meal times as you've suggested, with one closer to bedtime, and already this morning was easier. Thank you so much for making sense of this for those of us who have been struggling to maintain our sanity! ❤

GT C she is lonely and wants to be entertained. My lulu does this as well, or she will scratch at the door if for some reason she has been kicked out of my bedroom. Lucky for her, her 3 humans are on different schedules so she usually has someone around.

@Gerrit Peacock Yes that's pretty much what i do. She was one of those cats that would probably not be adopted so that's why I have her! She has a lot of anxiety. Not sure about her previous owners or what she had been through but she deserved to live knowing she was safe and loved. It took a long time for her to trust me but now she does and will curl up in my lap and sleep deeply. No more sleeping with one eye open. She knows I love her unconditionally! She can be a stinker sometimes but that was part of the package when I took her into my home and heart. I accept her and she accepts me. We like it that way!👩😸💕

Honestly I just give my cat a fill of dry in the morning with fresh water before I go to work to munch on during the day, when I come home around 6PM I pet him a bit, play if he's in the mood put him outside in a harness in the backyard for an hour, I give him the wet and fresh water, he usually eats 3/4 of the wet then goes to nap, and then comes back later at night for a snack. Then it's bed time. I just go to bed and he comes an hour later to curl up on my feet. For me the secret was 1 or 2 hours outside when I come back home. He sneaks up on squirrels and birds, eats some grass, and takes a sunbath, then he comes back in when he's hungry.

Hi Jackson Galaxy, I have watched this video multiple times and my cat still won't let me sleep! To be honest ignoring gets hard when she is so stubborn in waking me up to the point of biting, sitting on my head, and pushing my body with her head. It has gotten to the point I have to close her out of the room, however, I feel wrong about that because I think it stems from some boredom and weird form of separation anxiety. I definitely encourage playtime before bed and in the process you mentioned, but 3:00 am hits and she is terrorizing me (with love) and refuses to let me sleep. I got her in May of this year and love her to pieces, but she had a rough beginning in life so I have had to address behaviors overtime, but in general she is so loving and always there for me. Your videos have been a huge help and encouragement in this process. Thank you!

@@letyceleste2805 not completely, but when I moved in with my now husband who also had a cat it got better. Also even before then, she really did well when I established more of a bedtime routine with her. Now she settles at the bottom of the bed every night (with her stolen stuffed animals) and stays there unless I get up at night. She will greet me and then go back to the foot of the bed. Only exception now is if I go away for a few days, but I prep for that lack of sleep then.

Gonna start trying this because I haven't been sleeping well in about a week now. He usually goes to sleep before me or at the same time as me, but this week I don't know what happened (haven't changed any feeding times or anything). Hopefully these tips will get him back to his normal sleeping schedule.

***** My cat is a rescue, also. She was also starved (and horribly neglected) by the people who kept her. She's fine as long as there is SOME food in her bowl (she will only eat dry cat food), but as soon as it is gone she will meow until I put more food in. She doesn't eat more than a morsel or two right after I do, so it's not that she's hungry -- she just wants to know that food is THERE. I don't know that she sleeps beside me all night, but she goes to bed when I do and she's there when I wake up. I am a heavy sleeper, though. :)

+Dorothy B I have a rescue dog, that freaks if she doesn't see water somewhere, esp when it is hot outside. she was found in a cage with two other litter mates in the hot sun. They where piled on top of each other the cage was so small. I've had her for about 3 years and she is just now starting to calm down about the water thing, she leaves about 1/4 inch in the bottom of the bowl.. for "just in case." Of course, she hates enclosures and small spaces, except when we travel, she will jump right into her crate and bark until we put her into the car with the luggage. :P

If you have trouble ignoring your cat, have them sleep in a guest room downstairs with the door closed. It helps a lot with training. Eventually they learn your schedule.
