How to: Clean & replace Idle Air Control Valve Ford Duratec HE (Mondeo, Focus, Mazda)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Simple DIY how to: Remove, clean, and replace the IACV on a Ford Duratec HE or Mazda LF engine.
Video on the throttle body: • How to: Clean & replac...
Video on the throttle position sensor: • How to: Test a throttl...
Nb.: Later Duratec HE's use a drive-by-wire throttle body which effectively incorporate the IACV into the electronic throttle body - this would be a different process.
Idle Air Control Valves get dirty over time along with the rest of the insides of the throttle body assembly, and it's good practice to service them by just cleaning from time to time. Dirty or clogged throttle bodies can lead to irregular or surging idle and engine tune problems.
Failure will mean replacement is necessary. Computer codes may be set so these should be checked with a scan tool first.

    They switched to an electronic TB which doesn't need an IACV at some point. It's obvious to look at, if no throttle cable and IACV.

    Hello, I have a Ford mondeo titanium x 1.8 tdci 2008, when I drive normally and keep going up the rpms gradually around 2000 rpms in 2nd and 3rd gear start idleling if I keep at 2000 rpm, the car don't stop, it's look like she ask for more acceleration, or is it a sensor, what could be, it's look like a misfire but it's not, recently I change new injectors I blanked the egr valve, fuel just and only from BP as recommended for ford new fuel filter changed and clean the maf sensor new camshaft sensor genuin replaced. What could cause this symptom? thank you.

    hello Craig i have a 2005 focus ZX4 Duratec and when i have all the sensors plugged in when ever i drive it the car will rev to redline, occasionally drop very slowly back to idle but as soon as i accelerate it will stick again. I unplugged all the sensors one at a time to see if one was an issue and it finally stopped after i unplugged the MAF sensor down by the airbox. now it runs mostly perfect except for an occasional bogging issue in 1st pulling into traffic. What im trying to figure out is would the computer really stick the throttle open so much that the car will run away on me? ive followed your videos about the TBS and IAC as well.

  • @CraigsDIY

    @CraigsDIY

    6 жыл бұрын

    Have you checked what the throttle valve is actually doing? If it's opening way up for no reason and unplugging the MAF stops it, possibly the MAF is badly clogged up or otherwise faulty such that the engine thinks there's no air coming in. When you unplug it the engine's default 'guess' is better than the bad data, but it won't be efficient. Or, maybe that's misleading, and there's a problem with the TB (can't close properly?) or the accelerator. Just guessing.

    Your Focus has an electronic throttle right? in which case my videos on the IACV + manual TB are not quite applicable, although you can definitely pull off the TB and test it / clean it out - look up the proper procedures to reset it and be careful with fingers.

    im not sure i have two throttle cables attached unlike yours i48.tinypic.com/f0xfmr.jpg like that the inner throttle cable will keep the throttle open until i turn the car off and it idles normal until i press the gas pedal, it will then go back to sticking at the really high revs.

    I doubt your 2015 car even has an IACV, surely the throttle is electric? Your symptoms are typical of an air leak or other problem in air intake system.

    Craig i have the same problem as Kristen with my old iac i didnt had this problem, but since i replaced it with a new aftermarket one, the rpm drops and goed up at stop. Also the car does not idle smooth when it is in second gear and not touching the gas pedal, the rpm drops very low and than after3 seconds its rolling and idling normal but still not smooth. Could this be a problem with the new iac? Or does it needs to be reprogrammed in the ecu. I already did a ecu reset 2 days battery off. My car is a ford focus mk1 1.6 16v 2004 zetec SE

    Sounds like a classic vacuum leak. When you open the throttle it will run 'normally' but when closed it cannot idle normally. If you can't find a leak, a likely suspect candidate is the PCV valve hose, they fail frequently, which is behind the intake manifold (between the engine side and the back of the manifold). You really need to take the manifold off to get at it unless you have tiny hands and flexible arms in which case it is theoretically possible to access from the side once air intake hose is removed. (I am going to do a series of intake manifold & PCV videos, but they will be a few weeks from the time of writing).
