You can also polish them using a wedge or square white eraser.

Waaah! He's cleaning his own coins! Oh, the horror! Why I do declare, I am having the vapors... LOL. I kinda doubt there was a 1914-D or '09-S VDB in that batch of junk coins. But the people who sell the slabs (where the real money is) would like you to know you should never, EVER clean your own coins. You should pay THEM to clean - er, I mean RESTORE... your coins.

The latest issue of Coin age magazine has a top list of intentionally damaged/cleaned coins sold high at auction. Cleaning copper pennies without use of water can very well improve the value in the average eye and even the wealthy collector's eye.

How do they look a week after they have been cleaned? Mine were multi colored. Did I do something wrong? Not rinse them good enough? Not protect them afterwards?

They are still shiny even today! I have noticed that if you accidentally put a post 1982 or a silver into either the vinegar or baking soda it will cause the others to turn different colors. However once the penny has changed colors I have yet to find a noninvasive way to turn them back. Some recommend a very light coat of mineral oil but I have never done that.

@Jeremy Purdue what you said is correct, unless it's a metal detector find.

In 1982 part of the year was 95% copper and after Sept they were 95% zinc how can you tell the difference?

Either the drop test, based on sound. Best way is to use a fine weight scale. Zinc pennies are about a 2.5 grams. Copper pennies are about 3.
