How To Clean Brass Lamps | Thrifted Lamp Clean and Restore
These 4 lamps were thrift store purchases. They're at the top of my list of things you should always buy at thrift stores! I don't ever buy lamps new because there are so many great vintage options in thrift stores.
The most expensive lamp in the group was the two milk glass lamps for $12 together, the green glass lamp was $3, and the Art deco adjustable lamp was $5. You really cannot beat those prices!

I have been restoring everything over 50 years. All brass fixtures have some type of clear coating to protect them, its usually lacquerer and that must be removed with a chemical stripper 1st. I have used a special brass clean made by Ball and Ball brass co but its been off the market 30 years and IM finally about out. I now use semi chrome polish. Its good for every metal and I then clean it with alachlor or lacquer thinner and seal with Ceramilock. Its a very expensive ceramic finish better than the use on cars. I just finished a 125 yr brass chandelier that i did 47 years ago when I electrified it. It took me 12 hours to redo. There is no quick and easy way if the items are electrified except to completely take apart and do each piece separately.

Wow! That sounds like quite the process but I bet it turns out spectacular when you're done. I wish I had the time to dedicate to every detail like that but I fear the pieces would be lost in my house the moment my kids move them. Haha

Love the green shaded desk lamp! We have a running joke around here for "15 Minute projects" that take 2 or 3 days! Rub and buff is great stuff.

You hit the nail on the head lol... many of these "easy" projects really aren't so easy. But at least you feel happy to be able to check it off the list!

Love the lamps! Cleaning them takes forever though! The milk glass lamps will be darling in your girls' room.

Pretty lamps, Julie. I use old toothbrushes for everything. They cleaned up nice. Lampshades are always difficult for me to choose. Looking forward to your makeover.

Me too. I don't know why lampshades are so hard to pick! lol These came with the lamps, but they've got spots on them from aging and I just saw a terrific lampshade tutorial from @miss mustard seed if you're interested!

I'd definitely wear some kind of protective rubber gloves and do that outside or in an area with open windows and fan going to direct the fumes outside. Can see the difference in the look of lamp. I have a brass floor lamp and found your video looking for how to clean it. Thanks for the information.

Hindsight I agree 😆 probably a rubber glove and maybe even goggles type of job!! I had no idea how caustic it was until I started into it. And thankfully I did have a lot of good air flow.

I have touch lamp and i did the magnet test, but it looks like it has rust, what kind I do too clean or minimize the rust?

  • @CapturingWonderland

If it's brass it wouldn't rust. You could do a bit of a really fine steel wool with bar keepers friend. Then once it's all dried and cleaned off you could use some rub n buff or spray paint it.

I heard you can just use vinegar and that works the best

Vinegar sure cleans a lot of things. I haven't tried that personally, but now I'm intrigued!

I can’t believe it. I found that exact same green desk lamp today at Goodwill $1.99! Filthy. Looked up how to clean black spots off of brass lamp and there you are lol. Also I have and have had over 50 milk glass lamps. I have 4 alone in my bedroom 3 in another spare room and 4 upstairs in a sitting room 🤦🏼‍♀️
