HOW TO CLEAN A WEBER KETTLE CHARCOAL GRILL
______________________________________________________________
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO CLEAN YOUR BBQ
1inch putty knife
1 inch razor
sponge
#0000 Wool scrub pads
Degreaser
Dish soap
STEP #1
Remove both grates and put off to the side. Begin to remove the grease and gunk buildup using the plastic putty knife. Once you have removed as much as you can with that, switch to the razor blade to remove any tough and stuck on sections. Repeat this step for the lid until you have all the hardened great deposits removed.
SETP #2
With the grease removed, spray both the main bowl as well as the lid with degreaser and let it soak for a couple minutes. After a few minutes spray again and begin to rub the degreaser around using your #0000 wool brush to remove any of the leftover grease buildup. Once it has been scrubbed well, rinse it off completely with water.
STEP #3
With your grill rinsed, give one final sponge wash with dish detergent to fully clean the BBQ. Rinse fully and let dry before putting the grill away.
That’s it, enjoy.

This is my first charcoal grill after a lifetime of gas. kzread.infoUgkxBPjh-m7-eaAjTEt8BOZRSRRxXqxiI90W The food in it turns out great. Also, the ash remover makes it easy to clean. The base is sturdy and it has ample space inside.I use a chimney to get it started, and it seems pretty efficient. One chimney is enough to cook a whole lot of meat and still keeps burning. If you close the vents it cools down well making it so the coals remaining are still usable as supporting cast members (you still need fresh coals to get them going.I was going to get something bigger, but realized with coal, bigger is just more wasteful and harder to cook with.

Just picked up a Weber grill. Used it for the first time and love it. So far I’ve only cleaned the grate and I ended up just using a scrub pad and dawn dish soap and got it as close to sparkling new as possible. Took awhile but got most of it off. I’ll have to tackle the rest of the grill another day but plan on keeping it as clean and new as possible. I know a lot of guys don’t see the point in cleaning a grill and that it “seasons” it…I’d rather it stay as clean as possible.

Best trick I learned to clean a grill grate, whether it's a BBQ or oven, it's to soak the grill in a container with warm water and some Bounce sheets. For some reason, the antistatic compounds help detach all the crud and grease from the grill and makes it super easy to wipe off after a few hours. Mine looks like new now.

Thank you! I was going to give up on my Weber but found your video. So helpful! I used a metal putty knife, the Zep oven and grill cleaner, and steel wool. I had to be a little more careful because I have the charcoal grill with the propane ignite. My grill has never been cleaned since 2008 and hasn’t been used since 2017. After a thorough wash with Dawn, it looks beautiful!

Almsot exactly the method I use. I personally do not clean around the rim/lip (5:35) of the top or bottom. I used to, but found that a lot of air and/or smoke would move in and out of the grill. The grease that builds up on the rim/lip helps give the kettle a nice tight seal. I also remove the kettle from the table and place it on a trash can, lined with a garbage bag. I give the exterior of the bottom part a nice cleaning as you did with the top.

Looks great sir. I tend to side with the leave the seasoning folks, but I do scrape it out when things get overly greasy or gross looking. My biggest concern with cleaning it like you did would be the degreaser chemicals. I would still use them, but I might burn some charcoal at a high temp afterwards (no food) just to cook any residue that might remain. Great video as always Jabin. At times you sounded like you were describing something you just cooked. Made me smile.

I was probably hungry and thinking about food. It was strange filming a video all afternoon with no food reward at the end. 🤣. The degreaser isn’t really a problem because it’s mild, your rinsing it and then washing it again with dish soap followed by another rinse. But like you said, I will likely do a hot cook first and let it run for a bit before the food goes on.

I started cleaning mine today. Maybe I just had more buildup, but it took a lot of work. Under the lid and around the perimeter, it was like thick black varnish. After about 4 hours, it was mostly clean. Still a few stubborn spots that I haven’t been able to clean off. I’ll try to finish up in the next couple of days. Thanks for the video!

Another way to remove the gunk without damaging or scratching any of the enamel is to use a Steamer with the scotch-Brite attachment, without almost any pressure the steam will melt\dissolve most of the gunk\grease within seconds and the Scotch-Brite helps with any stubborn gunk. You'll be done in half the time or faster using a steamer...

All it took to clean mine was dish soap in warm water and a plastic bristle brush. Several scrubs and rinses took the build-up off and then I just gave it a good rinse with a garden hose and spray nozzle. Gotta say I didn’t let mine go without a good cleaning as long as you did though.

I have an 18’ “Silver” grill I dearly love, as I live in Thailand, where can I get parts that over the past 10 years have finally taken its toll! The wipers, charcoal grill are the parts I need to replace. Thanks for the great video!

Hey Jabin, love the videos. Great cleaning job. I have 2 kettles. I have the Weber 22 inch and a Napoleon Kettle Pro 22 with cast grates, I love both of them. I prefer the cast iron grills of the Napoleon but I Believe the Weber air/draft control is far superior to Napoleon. The Weber I can actually close it down the coals will extinguish and I believe the the Weber has way better Temperature control. Your review of the Napoleon was great.

Yeah I agree... Both grills are great but different.. I with I could get a combo of the two sometimes.. The airflow issue was the biggest reason why I switched.

Hey W / Jabin Great video, will keep this in mind when I come to clean my new kettle. W, I was just reading your question / this exchange and it all defo rang true to me because up until last week I was in two minds between picking up the Weber 22.5 Mastertouch Premium or the Napoleon Pro 22 kettle. In the end as mentioned here, because of the location of the upper air vent on the Weber Mastertouch (were it is much more sensitively and well placed slightly off centre / forward and to the side of the lid and not slap bang in the middle / at the top of the lid like it is in the Napoleon) which not only makes the Weber better for temp control but probably will mean when indirectly cooking / smoking the smoke will better pass over the food before leaving the grill - so will be much better for flavouring the cook are two reasons i decided in the end to get the Weber (I have just taken delivery of it!). But just like you both, I really did like the look of the thick, flat and heavy duty grate the Napoleon kettle comes with - this grate was the only reason I was in two minds to be fair. But, as I say I decided the Weber on the whole was the better option especially because I also was able to pick up the additional Weber add-on Cast Iron Sear GBS Grate anyway. This is much more heavy duty than the normal Weber grate and seems perfect for searing steaks, making this combo the sweet spot for me. With this add on searing grate, while perhaps not totally compensating for the Napoleon grate, I have gone a long way to having the best of the both worlds. Also, as I am sure you already know, but in case you dont, while I researched all of this, I came across alot of custom 3rd party manufacturers of aftermarket heavy duty and custom designed grates that are fully compatible with Weber kettles. Just one company is called The Burn Shop , here is a link of one of them but there is s few different manufacturers kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zpaho9izdb3fndo.html Not only do some of their grates look very similar to the Napoleon default grate but they also come in so many other designs and configurations, made from cast iron and aluminium; I have seen some cast iron ones which are half Grate and half Griddle/ Skillet. This in the end also effected my Weber decision; knowing in the future, I could probably just get a 3rd market grate that might be even better than the Napoleon one. And because an air vent is much less easier to change / move than a grate is to replace, with fundamentally already better temp control on the Weber it was probably the safer / best bet.

i've had my weber for 2 or 3 years now, haven't really deep cleaned like this, but have pressure washed a few things, i do probably need to get some new ash cleaning vents, i've taken them apart and bent them back but they keep gradually going back up.

Can I use Easy Off on the grates, and the interior part of the kettle and lid? Of course it would be rinsed thoroughly. My main concern is if it would damage or discolor the one touch blades, or damage or discolor any screws or hardware. Since the grill is made of enameled porcelain, that portion should be fine with Easy Off. Has anyone tried this?

Great video! Way more detailed than I’d do, but I don’t make videos either. One question: I live on the coast and the biggest issue is griil grate rusting. I have to replace the grill grate about every other year. Is there a way I can prevent it from rusting so quickly and completely? Oil? Thanks.

After a deep clean like that, are you supposed to season it or anything? When I got mine, I wiped it all down inside with bacon grease and had a bed of hot coals go for a little while.

Just picked up one of these kind of sight unseen off of Craigslist yesterday for $40. Got it home and man to I have some work to do. A lot of corrosion on the grates, I think need to be replaced as well as the wings in the bottom. I am hoping there isn’t too much damage to the bowl, but I am worried. Will attack it like this over the weekend. The table is in decent shape. $105 to replace the wings and grates, as I think they are too far gone. If the bowl doesn’t clean up well it may be $40 down the drain. Fingers crossed.

You used the very fine steel wool to protect the surface of the "porcelain", but before that you used a razor scraper to get off the hard caked on stuff? I was confused by this. Did the razor leave any scrape marks?

  • @PostalBarbecue

    @PostalBarbecue

I hear you. The razor you didn’t leave any mark. If you were to use wool that is t as fine you could get Moncrieff scratches just because you are scrubbing fairly hard at times which is different than the sliding of the razor. Same thing on glass too, you can razor on glass but can scratch it with heavier wool pads. Hope that makes sense.

@@PostalBarbecue Fair enough, that's what I'm doing now lol. It's too bad no one makes a stainless grate with the same tab cutouts so we can drop the grates down on the Pro kettles like the iron ones. In the mean time, keep up the great videos, Jabin! And do me a favor: Recommend some of the locally made rubs & sauces down in your part of BC, so I can pick some up next time I head down for work, or maybe order online!
